optical usb mouse doesnt wake screen

hi there, using a hp usb optical mouse with a toshiba tecra 8100, puppy 2.02.

if I have not used the keyboard for a few minutes the screen goes blank, even if I am using the mouse and only the keyboard can wake the screen back up - this is kind of annoying, especially when on the internet which is all mouse-action.

it is only the usb mouse that is dysfunctional - the trackpoint thing is working fine

anyone know how to get the mouse to keep the screen alive?

I seem to remember there was a conflict if two pointing devices are used. Not sure if it was ever solved.

At the time the advice was to turn off the trackball in the bios if this is possible . . . (I think)

must have been fixed or it wasn't universal. both my touch pad and my optical mouse are working, and i don't know how to turn the touchpad off (wish i could cut the damn thing out of my laptop).
