Puppy 2.02 SE ? - Very Mean Puppy 2.02 is out ...

#1 Post by JohnMurga »

Files can be found in :

http://www.my-plan.org/storage/puppyLinux/

This version has been created to fit on the smaller 50Mb CDs (5.48.01), in order to do achieve this MeanPuppy has shrunk by a further 1.5Mb.

In addition RutilT replaces WAG everywhere including the wireless wizard (as requested around the forum).

And Opera has been upgraded to the latest version (9.01).

But there's more !
  • A few 2.02 patches have been applied.

The missing files for IPW2200 wireless so that may of the "centrino" users like myself get wireless out-of-the-box.

"PMEDIA=fast" A hack for when SATA or SCSI are seen as USB, needed this for the frugal install on my sata machine until Puppy 2.10 comes out.

Geany was giving problems, so it was replaced with Beaver.

Torsmo is back :-) ... I could just about fit it in.

The latest version of murgaLua is in there along with the currently dummied up startup wizard (see screenshot).
And as normal
  • Extensive compression
InkScape, GNumeric, GAim and XOrg are the major things missing
    Mozilla is replaced by Opera
Has a complete set of Real codecs.
E3 (drove me nuts), replaced with VIM.
    RXVT tweaks, background tweaks, etc.
This has been tested on a couple of machines, from an old
32Mb VGA machine to my 1.5Gb sata laptop.

Enjoy

Cheers

:D

Very excited - this looks great John :)

In it now . . . Opera 2.02 iso is the one to download

ah . . . you have to open a cli and type in the command
in the image
to get the lua start screen

Be interested in how wifi users get on . . .
as you are using xvesa (applies to standard Puppy too) can we have a button for 1024 x 1280?

gotta do some tweaking . . .

no, server seems to be in trouble.
I'll send lobster login-information for dotpups.de, so he can upload the one he downloaded.

just you

have added my Mean pimping puppy image to news
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/LatestNews

have wriiten to our Geany developer - he is adding Lua suport
Beaver has it - in this version - the pupget?

changed font size to 108
and ran the JWM configurator and desktop background
I was astonished that Abiword was still in in there . . .
(a good choice)

We need wi-fi users to test this out . . .
How big is the real codex? - I would like that added to flash in Stadard Puppy

Barry is working flat out behind the scenes on Puppy 2.10
Some of his hard efforts are bearing fruit as in this Puppy and
I wonder if we will see a new PizzaPup soon?
. . . I have a feeling we might . . .

Should Lua be added? We have tkl . . .

I think I would start calling this PuppyOpera or PupOp - "Mean" is not inviting
but this new Puppy is fast, small, not only complete
but has innovations

It should be instantly familiar to Puppy users . . .

Now then - you need to save your old settings before running Mean Puppy
If running from CD your settings will be in /initrid/mnt/devsave
or click on MUT (Drives) and mount the hard drive
you need to copy pup_save.3fs to a new directory
Otherwise Mean Puppy will boot up with your existing settings . . .

Just turn off computer from Puppy to avoid saving to HD a new pup_save.sfs

I wonder if we will see a new PizzaPup soon?
. . . I have a feeling we might . . .
Well, I agreed to help someone with a project involving a custom version of 2.01, so between that and college and my website, I don't know when a Pizzapup will happen. However, I will be learning stuff about the boot process with this project, so that will help expediate Pizzapup a little. Plus it might whet my appetite for pizza-flavored puppies. I also have a better computer and an insane internet connection, so Pizzapup will be made using unleashed this time. But this is off topic and won't happen for a month or two, so I'm going to go to sleep now and dream about potential features. 8)

Edit: Tell you what, I'll bump it up on my priority list. Once I get this project done, I'll start cooking a Pizza rather than working on the "Project Formerly Codenamed Tajada de Jamon" like I had planned. I have no idea when I'll finish though, as I hardly know what the project is yet.

Your original MeanPup was very nice indeed, John. Can you now make an ExtremelyMeanPup, please, aimed at just users, ie leaving out anything associated with coding, languages, remodelling, etc., but keeping Opera. Around 20-25Mb would just about bring it in range of DUN s, even with greedy ISPs operating auto cutoff policies.

Sage, if you try downloading Puppy using 'wget -c <puppy-version>', you can resume the download if/when you're disconnected by running the command again (from the same directory of course ;) ). This has worked well for me (I'm on dialup too).

This is a wonderful version, but without Xorg, it is almost useless for users who have to switch between different keyboard layouts. If there was a simple way to add Xorg, this would be my version of choice.

8) John

Fluid is not built in?
The JohnMurga Lua run time is 474k - this seems larger than I had thought, does it have extended capacities?

Another thing for Standard Pup (poor Barry) is the speaker and connection icons are still not transparent to the taskbar. I thought this had been sorted . . .

OK gonna pimp this version up a little more . . .

Who else is running it? Impressions?
The thing that amazes me is how complete it feels.

Good job John - are you doing it on a laptop during your travels?

Might try that when I am up for a REAL challenge, but for now Mean Puppy is something for my personal use as much as anything else. Bringing it all down to 25Mb would cripple things that are too important to me.

The runtime is all that's required to actually run the programs, I hadn't even thought of including FLUID and the tutorials ...

I will in the next version.

Yup, got back to Brussels from Holland yesterday, and now I am down on my way to Lyon for a couple of days before finally settling down in Barcelona with family for a while.

Tack, tack, pakt.
Yes, Lob., John's version certainly has a great feel of completeness.
Indeed, it's easy to compile a list of extras, but the intellectual challenge of reducing the resource inventory has to provide the ultimate reward, John. I guess that was the original attraction for Barry and why we are where we are at present.

customized

#19 Post by vern72023 »

John this new one works great. I customize based on your mean puppy, replace opera with SeaMonket, get rid of xfinans and add wine and for a 63MB footprint have everything I could want

I am running it on a via nehemiah powered lean client with 512MB RAM and 2GB internal CF drive, but I also run it off of a victorinix 1GB drive on my keyring SA knife so i love the size

I really appreciate your work on this, and barry's on the 202 which has made it so easy to do the customization.

wow!!!! John, i love what you've done!!
now if someone would just compile the madwifi drivers for this puppy2.02 kernel... (i hate ndiswrapper...does not allow full functioning/configuration of my atheros card)... this would become my base os.

thanks !!!
