G'day,
I load Roots Magic (4) with my wine programs (pet or sfs depending on Pup-install) but I actually use Legacy (7.5) as my basic genealogy repository.
Legacy has been far more temperamental than Roots Magic with the various wine updates such that I'm presently still using green_dome's wine-1.5.1 when I want Legacy in a Pup.
So I wonder if you tried an older wine where Roots Magic did run, then stay with that wine for your genealogy doings?
Have you recently updated RM as another possible issue?
David S.

Yes.
Previously I used an older version in Win2000Pro, and all was well there.
Now I've given up using Windows.
Phoned the helpline at Rootsmagic dot Co dot UK and was advised to download the Windows installation file for the updated version 3, and install that within WINE.
Did that and all seemed OK at first glance, but then upon greater exploration, I discovered this problem.
2. Will try using different versions of WINE in various Puppies, and see what happens.

1. Working here in Racy-5.3.
Wine-1.1.39 version.
Installed RootsMagic-3.2.6, and it appears to be working just fine here.
2. Not sure if I should mark this [SOLVED], since the original title refers to the problem in Slacko, and the problem still exists in Slacko.
Should I uninstall the WINE-1.5.2 presently installed in slacko, and install WINE-1.1.39 there?
3. OK...
(a) In Slacko-5.3.1-SCSI...
Uninstalled WINE-1.5.2...
Saved the changes...
Installed wine-1.1.39-i486.pet linked HERE...
Ran winefile in a terminal, and the winefile window opened, BUT...
The display in the terminal window was scrolling down the screen without end, displaying a series lines of identical "fixme" warnings.
So...
I uninstalled the new WINE.
So...
(b) Can anyone suggest a suitable version to install?

1. I have seen that error when I try to run an application in wine without having installed the compiled-in .pet.
Mentioned in this post.

1. I installed WINE and both of the mpg123 PET's on the page you linked...
And ran WINE using a terminal window...
And got the scrolling lines of "fixme" warnings as before.
Have I failed to do what I aught?

The mpg123 file was to stop the error message ->
"err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winemp3.acm": libmpg123.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
If you could upload a text file of the "fixme" warnings, possibly someone could make sense of them and find a fix.

Dear Sylvander,
I have used green_dome's Wine versions for a very long time and can run even old Win 98 things. I think there might be something wrong with your general set-up. His pets are great and always work....
With kind regards,
vovchik
PS. Yes, wine does great a hidden dir which may contain bad files. Kill it and reinstall the pet.

I can believe that.
I'm seeing the flash of an error report at both startup and shut-down.
Is there a file for each process that would tell what these errors are?
