It happened to me all the time: my fancy background image and drive icons not shown at startup of Puppy. Only a restart of X-server would bring them back. What I suspected was true: the background image size was too large and took too long to load from the USB flash, where it resides in the puppy-save sfs file. Note that reading (and writing) speeds of files on flash can be relatively slow. My fancy background image was a png of 1.6Mb. When replaced with a jpg it was only 150K.
