Subject description: Tried a few things that didn't work; can't it be done?

I'm actually booting up PL528.005 frugally but can boot other puppies the same way (each has its own folder already). Recently, I d/l CorePlus-4.5.5.iso for trying booting through the lan connection an HPCompaq laptop that has no hdd.

I would prefer to boot CorePlus-4.5.5.iso frugally, then install in a sdcard (if possible), put it in a usb adapter (the HP laptop has no card port) & try to boot the HP with it. This's because I've searched for ways of updating the 'BonEcho' browser that comes with my version of DSL but with no luck there; I've tried also to learn how to upgrade DSL itself but the same thing here: no help found. Any of these OS (DSL - newest version & TinyCore) would be very interesting & useful for virtualization experimentation. This will be my next step...

Or, try to boot the HP laptop via PXE with this tiny OS. I already tried other puppies but it always gave me an error when loading 'initrd.gz' file.

I, sometimes, can boot that laptop with DSL in a flash drive, but it with increasing frequency has been giving me a message of "a disk unit is locked"??? When this happens it always reverts to trying to boot via PXE. Any ideas as to what really is happening when the BIOS reports this?

Any 'tree' of possibilities available to obtain all/any of the above results? Thanks!

Could be to do with how long it take to recognize the USB, have you tried different stick

is coreplus from tiny core?

Thank you for responding, darkcity!

I think I'm going to open a thread in the HP forum for dealing with this 'attitude' of the laptop in relation to insist in telling me that the disk is "locked", which I don't understand.

In relation to your last paragraph I'm not sure what you mean. In case I understood it correctly, the iso file was d/l from:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/4.x/x86/release/

Hope this info I'm providing is useful for you to understand the thread correctly.

You maybe could join their forum?
I guess they tell you to read the FAQ or Manual
or something but if your lucky somebody there
do give you good advice.

I struggled a lot with one of the CorePlus
but I don't remember any detail on how I got it working
and I used a different computer and different set up.

Here is an old one so most likely it will not work with later versions?

title CorePlus 3.4.2 desktop=jwm (hd0,1)/boot/ntfs-3g.gz
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz tce showapps desktop=flwm_topside showapps dmraid=on
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/core.gz /boot/ntfs-3g.gz

As is obvoius I do frugal om sda2 there.

the trick therre where to add this part.
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/core.gz /boot/ntfs-3g.gz

I use ntfs formatted HD.
I trust you have ext3 or something? So that would not be needed then.

Here is other signs of my struggle to find out how to boot.

title TC with JWM
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz tce=sda2 showapps desktop=jwm
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/core.gz /boot/ntfs-3g.gz

title TC with flwm
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz tce=sda2 showapps desktop=flwm
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/core.gz /boot/ntfs-3g.gz

title TC with flwm_topside
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz tce=sda2 showapps desktop=flwm_topside
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/core.gz /boot/ntfs-3g.gz

Have read & reread many web pages as advised in the TC forum & registered there & posted my issues there. Waiting for replies. Anything useful will be included below in this thread.

Thanks for the help received by this forum members!

OK, finally TinyCore booted up; my entries in menu.lst that made it possible are:

"# 2) CorePlus partition config begins
title tinycorelinux frugal in sda2 dir tc
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
kernel /tc/boot/vmlinuz quiet showapps nozswap pause waitusb=10 tce=sda2 printk.time=1
initrd /tc/boot/core.gz
# CorePlus bootable partition config ends"

The only issue was that it didn't show me a desktop, only a simple bash console. I was given a command line to execute from there but it gave me an error message in relation to 'X', not being a valid parameter/command. The command is:

"tce-load -iw Xvesa Xprogs Xlibs flwm_topside wbar".

After this issue it didn't occurred to me to use lower case 'x' instead, but said so in TC forum & received a reply saying that the use of 'X' was correct...

If some more useful bits come across my path I'll post them below.

@Benny7440 this "may" you.

This has nothing to do with the original distro, but, if Puppy Linux can help here ...

Questions
  • Have you tried the Puppy PXE Netboot process that JamesBond built which has been successfully used by many of us?
  • Do you have another HDD for your laptop that you can interchange?
Should you want to use the Puppy process that is designed, it can be found here.

I think either of these should/could help you utilize your laptop at your location.

Here to help

Yes, gcmartin, I've read that material more than once & tried it dozens of times already. The last time I tried it was today; I d/l Wary Tiny (81MB) especially for that purpose. It didn't completed loading the .gz file after trying it about 5 times in a row.

Today I was remembering that I have an old ipod Nano (1GB) that could be used (not until now) for that purpose --your last point about another hdd.

Tangent with this is redoing a PL431 usb installation but this time using the nano.
do you have any insights around this? Would it be much different of using a common pendrive to using the nano?

Thanks for your help!

PostPosted: Wed 01 Aug 2012, 16:57    Post subject: No experience with Nano - still trying to get info 2 help U

@Benny7440, I wish there was something I could do to help. But, I have never used a nano and am not familiar with this.

What I do find interesting is why the PXE booting is stopping/looping/disappearing?

Would you post what is occurring when you try to boot your laptop over the LAN? (There are messages at BOTH your Netboot server and you PXE client PC.)

When you start Netboot on the server PC, please start it in "Debug" mode. Then when you start your PXE PC you will see messages. These are reasonably important as they tell us the events of booting that is being requested at the server. (You can copy paste them to a post in this thread, if you like)

On the PXE client PC, you should see messages and progress dots .... on you screen as the boot process loads to RAM. Then, you should see some Linux boot messages occuring on your PXE screen as the PC progresses. These messages and your observations will have to be typed/written into the post that you make for us to try to evaluate what's occurring. If your screen goes black and you do NOT see anything, this is important to post, too.

Maybe we can get a better handle on why you cannot PXE boot your Puppy Linux, once we see the messages contents of the two PCs.

I do understand and realize that the procedure does NOT work for every known Intel/AMD motherboard, but, I have PXE booted about 2 dozen PCs, thus far, running into only 1 situation which is a problem. The 1, is a 12 year-old 32bit AMD Athlon whose BIOS is really dated. (The vendor has upgrades, but I'm too lazy to fix or test it...especially since I have other really dated PCs that are working for the testing I do.)

Hope this helps somehow.

P.S. You (or I) are not the only ones who have reported boot-time issues with PXE. But, in most past cases, community members just switched PCs and moved on.

Before starting the Netboot server I ran in a shell the following:
"sh-4.1# mknetboot.sh
4927 blocks
262095 blocks
/usr/sbin/mknetboot.sh: line 42: 21027 Terminated Xdialog --title "mknetboot" --no-buttons --infobox "This will take a while. Please wait ..." 0 0 60000 (wd: ~)
sh-4.1#"[/]

I choose PL511 for mknetboot.sh command. Hope the above brings some light to a previously obscured subject. Thanks for your help, gcmartin!
