Ok, this is a weird question, and perhaps I'm going mad. Very Happy

For a long time I've kept a richtextfile (made with abiword) to keep notes on webpages and the like related to puppy linux and other stuff.

Today, when I tried to go back to some of those pages by cutting and pasting the web addresses from that files, I'd get a webpage with this error:

I can confirm that the two URLs do what you say. They are not the same. I cannot find the difference either. Confused

Hi,

You were correct the first time, there are some hidden characters in the url from your archive.

Pasting into geany does not reveal them. Paste them into terminal emulator urxvt shows additional question marks

paste this back into browser and deleting additional question mark restores the link.

Correct. Why this happens I can't (yet) explain.. Both Opera & FF- NO cache..

I'm on a WinXP box right now.

First link has hidden characters, which show up in IE8 URL box as squares.
(in same positions as last two question marks from Semme's post)

Second link works OK.

(I usually save URLs in e-mail drafts folder.)

I think generally speaking AbiWord has been a fine looking editor with quirks.

The SeaMonkey Composer writes good code and markup for basic use.

My suggestion is don't debug AbiWord and use the Composer instead.

I find Abiword to act a little confused sometimes, when pasting text from a webpage, and I guess it has to do with different text encodings.

I always use the 'Paste unformatted' command from the 'Edit' menu, when pasting text from websites.

for what its worth, Dillo seems to read the web addresses properly.

And then from Dillo, I can cut and paste the address to Firefox.

(what a kludge!)

How is it possible for there to be hidden characters? Is it because of UTF-8 or something?

In SeaMonkey, if I go to View -> Character encoding -> More encodings and choose one at random, the hidden characters usually show up as weird characters. UTF-8 just ignores them as though they weren't there.

Windows (Vista) gives a warning ...
