1. Hmmm, this is being difficult!
In Thunderbird, I go to "Tools->Add-ons->Get add-ons", and search for "ImportExportTools", but it isn't listed in the found add-ons.
But it IS included in the online list when I click on "See all results [8]".
But that only downloads the xpi file I already have.
Still confused. Confused
Why doesn't it list "ImportExportTools" in the found add-ons?

Why are you searching for it when you have already downloaded it. Just install it.

(a) I would, if only I knew HOW.
My understanding at this point is:
[Just like one installs add-ons in Firefox] I need to find the add-on whilst working within Thunderbird, then install it from there.
And you seemed to be telling me to [within Thunderbird...] search for the add-on, then as part of the installation of that found add-on, use the "spanner" icon to navigate to the already downloaded file, and choose that so it will install.

(b) Could you give me step-by-step install instructions?

See explanation above.
Sorry if I'm being thick. Sad

Sylvander,
Nil desperandum - It is not particularly intuitive & you are almost there. Smile

1. Using Rox in Slacko make sure that you have the add-on (importexporttools-2.7.2.1-tb.xpi)
in your Downloads directory, then close the Rox window.

2. Launch T'bird & navigate to ADD-ONS MANAGER via Tools/ADD-ONS.

3. On LHS of screen click on Extensions to display any add-ons that you already have installed.

4. To the left of the "Search all add-ons" box at the top right of the screen click
on the arrow right next to the spanner & then in the drop down menu click on "Install add-on from file"

5. In the Rox window that then opens, browse to your Downloads folder, select the xpi file and then
click on open.

6. In the next window that appears click on "Install now"

7.In the next window that opens click on "Restart now"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
The extra importexport tools should appear at the bottom of your tools menu.
The above assumes that you are running Thunderbird 13.0.1 in Slacko 5.3.3.1
If T'bird is not up to date start by clicking on HELP then About to update it
before starting.

1. "Using Rox in Slacko make sure that you have the add-on (importexporttools-2.7.2.1-tb.xpi)

(a) Using Xfe... [Does it make any difference?]
I copied importexporttools-2.7.2.1-tb.xpi to "/root/.quickpet/Downloads" [the only downloads folder I could find].

2. "Launch T'bird & navigate to ADD-ONS MANAGER via Tools/ADD-ONS."
Did that.

3. "On LHS of screen click on Extensions to display any add-ons that you already have installed"
Did that.
There add-ons already installed. i.e. The window is empty.
By-the-way, the "Extensions tab is 2nd from left at the top; there's nothing displayed down the left side.

4. "To the left of the "Search all add-ons" box at the top right of the screen click
on the arrow right next to the spanner & then in the drop down menu click on "Install add-on from file"
"
(a) The "Search all add-ons" box is at the top left of my screen, and...
(b) There is NOTHING to the left of the box. [See screenshot below]

5. "The above assumes that you are running Thunderbird 13.0.1 in Slacko 5.3.3.1"
I'm running Thunderbird 3.1.9 in Slacko-5.3.3.1-SCSI.

6. "If T'bird is not up to date start by clicking on HELP then About to update it before starting"
Went to "Help->Check for updates", but it said there were "no updates available". Sad
v13.37 is available in the Puppy-Slacko repo; should I uninstall the old, and then install the new, or is it OK to install the new over the top of the old?

Sylvander,
That would explain the confusion. Smile 3.1 sounds like an old lucid pet & v13.37 like a slackware file.
I would suggest that you uninstall your existing pet, reboot & then install
peebee's 13.01 pet which can be found below. Once up & running follow the "destructions" in my previous post. Smile

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=638374#638374

A manual install (which I use) is possible if peebee's pet does not get the job done. 13.01 is however the very latest & is what I have shown in my previous screen-shots.

SUCCESS Number-1! Very Happy

1. I had trouble with the install of Thunderbird-13.01 as supplied by your link.
Problem was...The folder/file system for the old [uninstalled] Thunderbird [TB] was still in place...
And the new TB wouldn't boot....
Neither from the "menu" nor the terminal window.
So...

2. I deleted all of the folders/files for the old TB, and...
Uninstalled the new TB.
Made sure there were no traces left of ANY Thunderbird.
Then...

3. Installed the new TB version 13.01.
That was then able to boot.
So...

4. I've made in the new TB, the 3 identities [2 for me, 1 for wife].
That seems to have worked OK.
Will check it can fetch mail when there are once again some emails waiting for collection on the pop3 server.

5. Now to follow your instructions above to install importexporttools-2.7.2.1-tb.xpi
Fingers crossed. Very Happy
My goodness...that was EASY! Cool
Hmmm, what now...must go back and re-read the earlier posts.

OUCH!
Just discovered today that Mozilla intends to cease development of Thunderbird in about 2 years!

Seems to make little sense for me to BEGIN using TB at this time.

Any suggestions for an Puppy Linux alternative to TB?
Is Seamonkey as good?
Would I be able to import my emails into it?

Hi Sylvander,

Quote:

I spotted that too. Another article here: Mozilla Puts the Brakes on Thunderbird - PC Advisor http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/opinion/internet/3368780/mozilla-puts-brakes-on-thunderbird/

Seamonkey 2.10.1 (included in the Slacko Alphas) can import .eml files without add-ons so in your circumstances
(attempted rescue of DBX files) it is probably a question of whether TB or Seamonkey does the better job.

I suggest that you try both and then run them concurrently until you develop a preference. Personally I dislike combined clients & will be sticking with TB & Chromium. (Plus Outlook 2002 in XP pro!)

OK...
I guess I could run with TB, and at some future date move my emails [using exported eml files] to some other email client like Seamonkey. Very Happy

See this new thread regarding an unrelated problem with using the new Thunderbird.
