[Discontinued] Puppy Slacko, Gnome 2.32

#1 Post by Jejy69 »

Hellooooo !

"Chose promise, chose due" ! "A promise is a debt that we may not forget".

New ISO is coming & I tried this time to please everyone. :)
Okay, Okay... What's new... So...
We have here Gnome 2.32.1 with Puppy Precise, PAE enabled, more light ( ISO = 230mo, Ram used in live = 120 ), MintMenu updated, JWM working, official Puppy Menu in MintMenu, more stable & reliable, new Puppy look ( Bye Bye Petit Pois :P ), official Clock-applet is working now, many fixes, Puppy's Network utilities issues fixed & "Other" directory is removed from the menu now. See Screenshots. :)
Do not hesitate to report bugs, and I hope you'll enjoy this. :D
Thanks you to use and try it !!!

A reliable Gnome 3.4.2 is not for today, it is really bugged on Puppy .
Wallpaper : thanks to jebaJQ8.

I'd like to introduce an ISO, I think stable enough to give you an overview. With a size of 300 MB, this Puppy offers a full Gnome desktop, in its stable version 2.32!
Based Slacko 5.3.3, this derivative thus offers several software created by the Gnome community, like Rhythmbox, Totem etc..
And big bonus ! The Linux Mint menu specially prepared for this distribution, which is still exceptional, because normally only available for Mint and its derivatives such as Debian, Ubuntu etc. ..

You'll can find different languages, locales, in this package :
http://e-nautia.com/disk/download.php?id=2523102
I'm french user, therefore the default language is French, sorry...

To download ISO, it's here :
http://e-nautia.com/disk/download.php?id=2524721 ( 300mb )
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B4gCm9 ... jVUSjVpZ00

Totem already includes all plugins, then you will be able to read all media formats.

I put screenshots :

this image will show you that this desktop is relatively low resource utilization.
Image

Here, the famous manager of gnome appearance, and Nautilus 2.32 with special user folders.
Image

And to finish, the famous MintMenu of Linux Mint with Rhythmbox.
Image

This is my first Puplet and I would like to have your opinion on this work, thanks !

Md5 : 1245d087aace1dd3395d977db9d799fe

Thanks to Petihar, Musher0, Médor, Esmourgouit, Matthieu PONTAC, Pelo and others, with the Puppy community !

cordially, thanks all ! :)

Downloading now. This looks exciting! Gnome is sure to be lightening fast on puppy. Do you think it could run on Lucid as well?

Great job on this puplet !
My french only speaking buddies will love it.
I love the "drag an app launch icon from the menu & drop it on the deskptop" feature.
Please consider enabling slackware repos for the next version.

Très bon boulot pour un premier puplet !
Bonjour de Belgique (une fois).

By the way, runing on Futjitsu Siemens Esprimo dual processor @ 3GHz with 4 GB ram.

According to Salvador Dali (and he should know)
this puplet was created at the center of the Gnome Universe

Hi Jejy69
Has it got Spanish support? There is a friend of mine who would love this puplet, but he does not speak either English or French.

This rocks! :D Chose my keyboard settings and country settings (en, US) from the firstrun, restarted X, and now menu, desktop, everything is in English for me. Somehow lost my clock from the gnome panel though. Gnome is very FAST in puppy!! Good work!

Hello!

Thank you for your opinion, is very encouraging!
Lobster thank you to this little comparison, Perpignan, not well known, seems to be the center of the world for the artist.

To answer vicmz, Spanish is of course supported, as evidenced by the following images ( Sorry for the images too big ... ), but you must have the lang pack es to complete the Puppy locale.
Download the sfs above, and this package which add languages for :

-Totem
-Rhythmbox
-Mintmenu
-Nautilus

I like to have confirmation, WiFi does it work? I fear that after installing Frisbee, DHCP is no longer functional.

Code: Select all

Somehow lost my clock from the gnome pane
Yes, the default gnome clock does not work ( I don't know why  ), I implemented an alternative: lunar. :)

Code: Select all

Please consider enabling slackware repos for the next version.
it will be done! :D

English locale works, great ! :)

Thank you! :D

Very interesting. Gnome desktop and Mint menu look great. :)

On a quick test I think more work is needed on integrating Puppy programs with Gnome and Mint menu.

Terminal and time & date do not work. When a USB stick is inserted it is not discovered and the only way to mount it is by running pmount.

Jejy69, I hope you continue working on this because it is a great project.

Yes, it's not perfect... :?
Terminal doesn't work ? It's weird, it is normally functional.
Time & Date don't work, when I type in a terminal "type-admin", it returns an error (I think this problem come from DBus ) :

Code: Select all

time-admin

(time-admin:15174): pup-volume-monitor-WARNING **: Module loaded successfully

(time-admin:15174): polkitgtk-CRITICAL **: Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Erreur lors de l'appel de StartServiceByName pour org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1 : GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success

(time-admin:15174): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success
#
In next ISO, to complete Drives mounting, I will install this :
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78881
It detects drives, USB ..etc

Of course I continue  ! I would not give up so close to the "end", and any help is welcome! :D

Good evening! (At least in France  )

Small update!
I was wrong with the ISO put online yesterday ...
That's why I mentioned a bug Wifi that did not exist on the version you downloaded.
I put online an other ISO, which resolves many problems.
-Add the clock ( :D ), but date & time doesn"t work yet.
-Right Click --> Properties solved
-Add Drives, USB mounting in "Computer"
-No JWM at the start-up, It's clean now.
-Minor fixes.

I put link on the top, and the MD5 :)

Sorry for inconveniences !

Don't get me wrong now. I am a total nobody so this is not
me making criticism of you it is Just me very curious.

I can understand if one have a Puppy with LXDE or xfce or E17 something.

But Gnome? Okay maybe if one are so used to it that all the others feel bad
using them?

Don't answer I only wanted to share my bewilderment soemthing.
congrats to the accomplishment though. Everybody should have a pet
project. Such are important.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

@ Nooby

Why should I not respond? All opinions are welcome, as in any self-respecting community. :)
As my mother would say, all criticism are constructive!

I think Puppy is a very flexible distribution, and the establishment of another desktop manager like Gnome could widen its scope.
I think we have this chance when compared to other OS made in Silicon Valley, we can choose.
After the individual tastes make the difference.
In fact, I do not understand,

Code: Select all

 "But Gnome"
, I do not know if it's a shame, or I risk a curse, but I like Gnome, and I accept. :P

Cordially !
