Just a thought, but could NetSurf be worth a look? I know it doesn't have Javascript currently, but one of the platforms it runs on is RISC OS, which is an ARM-based OS. In fact, I'm typing this on the RISC OS version right now. Source is available from the NetSurf website http://www.netsurf-browser.org/downloads/source/ - the current stable version is 2.9.

Dad's just received shipping notification for his own Raspberry Pi! :-)

I have used Netsurf = good, reliable
and Chrome = good (comes with Flash) does not crash the computer if there are browser issues
Midori (in Debian Squeeze) was not reliable/usable

Links = odd - no javascript for example but speedy, find it useful

Have not tried FireFox or Opera on Rpi or any other browsers . . .

:)

the enclosed text file (just remove the .gz)
is a gtkdialog Puppi sap6 version of GROWL
- security enhancements, links to for example simple penetration
open port probing etc

I have not tuned it too much
but basically the menu is at the top
and the cancel button is at the base
- they way it should be.
It is alpha quality as calling 'defaultbrowser' is not yet implemented
but may well be in Sap6 Alpha1 - when Barry will be using Chromium browser - oh yeah!

A few quick comments on pre-alpah sap6 for Raspberry Pi

#187 Post by rrolsbe »

First of Barry hats off to you on getting Puppy ported to the Raspberry Pi so quickly. I have a few suggestions and found a few problems with the sap6.

Might be nice to include the omxplayer as it uses the GPU hardware acceleration. I simply copied the files from the Debian squeeze and it worked fine in Puppy on the Pi.

I have my Pi connected to a Motorola LapDock. I could not get any additional USB devices (beyond the USB devices in the LapDock keyboard/trackpad) to work on either the Pi or LapDock USB ports with the sap6 release. These same additional USB devices work fine with the Official Debian Squeeze Pi distro. Any ideas?

I also installed a python command line (no X required) youtube player that uses the omxplayer on the Debian official distro. I think it should install and work fine in Puppy on the Pi but needs python during the last step of the installation. I believe the devx includes python correct (which should include the python installer)?

Last question, do you ever plan to allow Puppy to be used with SFS/pupsave files or will the only option be a full install? Might be to slow trying to decompress SFS union mounted content on the Pi???

I also plan to eventually only boot from the SDHC FAT partition and have the Linux ext4 and swap partitions on an SSD connected to one of the Pi/LapDock ports. Hopefully performance will be much better reading and writing to a faster device (4MB/sec versus >20MB/sec)

Barry, Thanks Very Much for Your Hard work!!!
Regards, Ron

PS. After a few more things work, I plan to Paypal you a small token of my appreciation as I have in the past..

Two 'raw' videos
http://youtu.be/KptuW92krmQ
http://youtu.be/k4VdZTgDCOY to give people some idea

meanwhile . . . HDMI TV has been hijacked for viewing 'Wimbledon' - a local sporting event.
So had to be snappy with them videos . . . :?

It takes me about 40 minutes to walk to Center Court incidentally. However it usually takes an hour or two of queuing (at least) to get in . . . don't have corporate tickets . . . already rambling . . .

Great achievement from Barry. 8)

"This will certainly lead to a new version of Raspberry Pi in the future. We will also listen to our community of users and developers to try and incorporate their ideas and comments. For the moment, our focus is very much on what we have today."

That is going to be at least a year or two away. I hope will have an in built Puppi (preferably).

As people start to get boards, we are finding the different TV's are having different results. We have two woof builds (SAP alpha 3) and Micko trying to get a working Puppi Slacko for ARM.

Hold on to your fruit.

Daughter boarding is going to be amazing.
It is the growth potential and support that is fueling the raspberry . . .

Just got my raspi in, :D loaded the sap6. and posting from it now. Wow, really nice Barry! Wifi is working great. Also gave the Debian port a shot, but sap6 is much more complete imo. Has anyone had any luck setting the res to 1024x768? Xorg wizard don't seem to be working for me. Maybe something in the config.txt?

thanks

Nice to have hardware eh? :)
Fellow fruterians and Puppys now joining the punnet . . .

Is that res on HDMI? If so it should be automated?
You can set the res but I did not have much luck with that.

Can not find the link but I seem to remember I did it in config.txt
which is in root
or
/

Hope it is okay that I am very selfish here and ask particular things?
Now I know that one have to buy a very special high quality SD card
of the big type.

What about the connection to keyboard and mouse?

I would want to buy a USB Hub that I connect to the RPI
and that way get these possibilities.

From USB socket on Hub to USB socket on RPi?
From USB Keyboard to USB socket on Hub
From USB Mouse to USB socket on Hub
From USB Flash Memory or External HardDisk. to USB socket on Hub

Does that work or does one need to use bluetooth and IR and
Wifi and such for keyboard and mouse?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

I have a R_Pi model "B" with two USB ports

I purchased a Logitek 320 keyboard/mouse combo, and I plugged its USB-receiver in to one of the R_Pi's USB ports, thus enabling both with a single USB port.

Into the other USB port on the R_pi I plug a powered D-Link USB hub (7-port) which I use for USB thumb drives and an external USB hard drive.

This arrangement (modestly priced) works well for me, but others have described problems booting.

BK has described his hardware setup and provided a very interesting discussion at http://bkhome.org/arm/rp-hardware-setup.htm.

I do not know if the Debian arm R_Pi kernel has bluetooth or IR enabled, but I have not seen any posts describing their usage.

I would use a generic USB wired simple keyboard and mouse and nothing more.
You need a powered hub.

If you use a non powered hub, you might with a following wind get 3 USB ports. Don't rely on it for now.

Overclocking and over volting might fix this but this might fry your board - so not for noobys. :)

Wi fi dongles work but have not heard of people using IR or bluetooth, though they may well be.

A new motherboard takes me about 6 months to understand its nuances in bios. Quirks and individual characteristics.

The Rpi has no bios. No hardware clock. It has an ARM CPU.

Despite that several Puppi alphas are around that we can grow with.

Performance continues to improve on some of our base files
Debian Squeeze has been replaced as the recommended base by the Rpi foundation with Raspbian Wheezy
Those who are using the recent Debian wheezy beta will also see a very worthwhile, but somewhat smaller, improvement.
http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads

If Midori works above four tabs then we have a more Puppian browser.

BarryK and other smart dogs are already on it . . . :)
