Hi , Biltoo :)
In my fatdog 600b1 I tried hard to make subtitles show on in VLC without any success...
I was searching the forum for some informations to understand why VLC doesn't show subtitles in fatdog 600 and saw your previous comment .
Looking back in fatdog 521 or LH64 5.14 (running in wine ) there are also no subtitles in VLC .
Are there any settings to fit or the issue is deeper :?:

I think kirk is going to recompile vlc for the next release of fatdog64-600, tell him about subtitles not working.
I don't know of any setting to turn on subtitles, pemasu has subtitles working in his vlc-2.0.1,I guess you already know that.

After a little sleep...a quick live pfix=ram test run. Sound and internet good on initial boot ..... still boots to a black display with "monitor out of range" message...easy fix though.

Thank you guys of initial reports of latest build. Broadcom users are wanted to report next, lol.
Billtoo. Cmus is in exprimo repo now :)

Gobbi. Including subtitles support is compile time process. It has been tricky in Puppy. I am stil not sure what are the needed steps. I just have now environment which enables it. When you compile VLC with subtitles support, you need more files to the /usr/lib/gconv directory. More character sets than Puppies created by woof includes. I dont even know what debian package installed them. When I have installed several packages and succeeded with subtitles...I just copied those character sets files and created a pet of them. What else it really needs...I am not sure of those mandatory steps.

Hi Pemasu,
again tons of thanks for this new exprimo 5x.4.3.2.2 !
Here some quick trials:
1- 5X4.3.2.1 looked to boot a bit faster (the step "recognizing optical devices" ..."or recognizing multimedia devices" was faster (a few sec ...!)
2- here klavaro asks for a missing libcurl-gnutls.so.4; whereas it did not on 5X4.3.2.1 ....?? i do not understand as i did not found libcurl-gnutls.so.4 on 5X4.3.2.1...?
3- updating from 5X4.3.2.1 an existing squeeze-save: GTick was running on it; now GTick claims /dev/dsp is missing ...! Grabbing in /dev ....and there is no longer /dev/dsp !???
Checked on a fresh 5X4.3.2.2: GTick runs like a charm and /dev/dsp is present.
Cheers!

Charlie6. Just copy from other Puppy that /dev/dsp and your savefile should work for that problem
About klavaro. I installed the version from squeeze repo and it does not ask about libcurl-gnutls.so.4.
Weird problem. I believe it is not caused by base distro but something in your installation.
Could you point me to the klavaro version you used. It would help me to inspect the problem.

Hi pemasu:

Broadcom user here. Actually you were the first to respond when I first encountered broadcom on my new laptop earlier this year.

Just now did a usb install.

wl driver identified and setup by following the few simple steps required.
Did have to use frisbee the others didn't work.
Downloaded chromium and by using sync I was connected and had bookmarks ready to go.

Downloaded the following .sfs:
libreoffice.sfs
jre.sfs
acroread.sfs.

Acroread not working showing an error. Will have to investigate further.

Downloaded vlc from the repro and from your link here on the forum.
Not working yet, may to have to look for help with these.

Very happy with progress so far, Congratulations on a great distro.

Irishrm. When you download vlc form repo, click check dependencies and then download and install them. You will need qt and vlc-deps-dpup pets to be installed also. PPM dependency checking takes care of them and notices the need and downloads all 3 pets.

Good to hear about wl and broadcom works. Yeah. I havent even tested SNS network tool. I have used solely Frisbee all the time, lol.

Compiling

#553 Post by DC »

Hi pemasu,
Q's about compiling.
I tried compiling for my USB DVB RTL2832U
but

Code: Select all

# last few lines of failure
make[4]: *** [drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb/rtl2832u.o] Error 1
make[3]: *** [drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb] Error 2
make[2]: *** [drivers/media/dvb] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers/media] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2
this is my howto, could you look and see if theres anything different you might do?
these instructions have previously worked with 525,528,slacko etc.

Compling a module for DVB - RTL2832U
Kernel source and devx required

cd /usr/src/linux-x.x.x.x/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb
## copy device kernel headers for RTL2832U

## add to Makefile (still in same dir)
dvb-usb-rtl2832u-objs = demod_rtl2832.o dvbt_demod_base.o dvbt_nim_base.o foundation.o math_mpi.o nim_rtl2832_mxl5007t.o nim_rtl2832_fc2580.o nim_rtl2832_mt2266.o rtl2832u.o rtl2832u_fe.o rtl2832u_io.o tuner_mxl5007t.o tuner_fc2580.o tuner_mt2266.o tuner_tua9001.o nim_rtl2832_tua9001.o tuner_fc0012.o nim_rtl2832_fc0012.o demod_rtl2836.o dtmb_demod_base.o dtmb_nim_base.o nim_rtl2836_fc2580.o nim_rtl2836_mxl5007t.o tuner_e4000.o nim_rtl2832_e4000.o
obj-$(CONFIG_DVB_USB_RTL2832U) += dvb-usb-rtl2832u.o

## add to kconfig
config DVB_USB_RTL2832U
tristate "Realtek RTL2832U DVB-T USB2.0 support"
depends on DVB_USB
help
Realtek RTL2832U DVB-T driver.

cd /usr/src/linux-x.x.xx.x
make menuconfig
## when GUI pops up go to
Device Drivers > Multimedia support > DVB/ATSC adapters
## highlight (press space bar to select)
Realtek RTL2832U DVB-T USB2.0 support (NEW)
## and press m
## exit exit exit yes to save

## Make command also creates the bzImage and makes the modules without extra commands.
make bzImage ## this compiles the kernel image why ? who knows
make modules ## takes time enough for tea
make modules_install
depmod-FULL

copy dvb-usb.ko dvb-usb-rtl2832u.ko
from
/lib/modules/<kernelversion>/
to
cd /lib/modules/2.6.33.2/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb/
depmod-FULL # to activate

testing
dmesg | grep dvb
A final question about compiling can you use the same kernel headers for any puppy build, any kernel version or 64bit(Fatdog) etc?

thanks

OK ! I was wondering if the squeezesave update operation would need enough partition memory capacity where it is located ...as there was ca. 100MB left on it (i remember a previous post where problems here were due to run out of memory...)

a. On a fresh 5X4.3.2.2, I have
1- tried forum member muggins pets with versiob 1.3.4 and the later 1.9.4 from debian (maybe from debian wheezy)
(download link is http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/ma ... 1_i386.deb )
2- tried klavaro_1.5.0-1_i386.deb from squeeze debian repo;

b. afterwards on a fresh 5X4.3.2.1, I repeated the same klavaro install.

both case returns:

Code: Select all

# klavaro
klavaro: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkdatabox-0.9.1.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
             <----here have installed  libgtkdatabox-0.9.1 ---->

# klavaro --version
klavaro: error while loading shared libraries: libcurl-gnutls.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
note: mentioned in debian repo, whatever squeeze or wheezy version, libcurl-gnutls is listed in the dependencies
from debian repo.... wrote:dep: libcurl3-gnutls (>= 7.16.2-1)

DC. Kernel 3.4.2 has initial support for your stick....in /lib/modules/3.4.2-dpup/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb/dvb-usb-rtl28xxu.ko

Have you plugged in your stick and tested. And check the dmesg in console after that. Or try modprobe dvb-usb-rtl28xxu and test again.

I couldnt find recent patch for your stick.

/usr/src/linux/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb/rtl28xxu.c mentions rtl2832u several times.
If that support does not work for you, I could try to hunt recent ready patch for 3.4.2 kernel.

About kernel headers. They are included in devx sfs in Puppies. In dpups also. When you compile kernel modules...I would recommend to use devx sfs of the build. The other devx sfs usually works for applications. I mean same puplet but older kernel version usually works. Debian packages their kernel totally differently than Puppies. So...the ready kernel patching kits from debian ubuntu or squeeze does not work.

Charlie6. Yeah...it seems to need that libcurl-gnutls.so.4. libcurl3-gnutls deb from PPM debian squeeze repo installs that lib. I must have had that lib due to my compiling already.

Hi pemasu,
RTL2832U Not working. Here's the results

As a benchmark, puppy 528 which uses the module I compiled

dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software demuxer.
dvb-usb: RTL2832U DVB-T USB DEVICE successfully initialized and connected.

unplug and replug RTL2832U - no reaction at all

# Twinhan

[ 664.066565] dvb-usb: generic DVB-USB module successfully deinitialized and disconnected.
[ 666.220826] dvb-usb: found a 'TwinhanDTV USB-Ter USB1.1 / Magic Box I / HAMA USB1.1 DVB-T device' in warm state.
[ 666.239425] dvb-usb: will use the device's hardware PID filter (table count: 16).

[ 666.302608] dvb-usb: TwinhanDTV USB-Ter USB1.1 / Magic Box I / HAMA USB1.1 DVB-T device successfully initialized and connected.

Whats the criteria for finding kernel headers /patches. As I want to get this usb-dvb working under Fatdog as well.

One other point relating to sqeeze trying to resize windows you have to be very accurate with your mouse pointer. Is there a setting to make the grab area wider/thicker?

thanks

DC. I am checking the rtl2832u patches.
About JWM window thichkness. Yeah...I have reduced it to too narrow. In /root/.jwm/themes....check the jwmrc files of the themes. In there is the tag: <Width>3</Width>
Change it for example to whatever number you want. From 1 or 3 to 5 or 8. From 8 the resizing by dragging is easy, lol.

Hello Pemasu / Billtoo / Anyone else,

I would be curious to know if this video stream plays in your new VLC 2.0.1

http://173.193.48.140:8080;stream.nsv

It is just the one from the button "Shoutcast Movie" in Pupradio/Puptelly but it is in fact "Old Fashioned TV".

I have found that in some VLC versions in Puppy I get video but no audio and I was wondering if this is something in the way it was compiled or if it is something which needs to be altered in the (rather large) preferences like a demuxer setting perhaps?
