To any Lenovo S10-3t netvertible users, and perhaps other touchscreen users, DPup Exprimo 5.X.14 works even better than DPup-Exprimo 5.X.3.1.10.2: running temperatures are cooler, return-from-suspend functions without crashes, and its older kernel still contains the necessary hid-multitouch driver for the Cando touchscreen (along with needed drivers for the dreaded ClickPad touchpad)
Re: lower temperatures—my amateur opinion is this 2.6.39.4 kernel burns less than the 3.1.* While both kernels generate more heat than Windows 7, the 2.6.39.4 allows careful users to tinker and keep the roaring fan mostly at bay:
1) Powersave Mode
2) Wifi/BT off when not needed
3) Low-lit resolution
4) Wine/MS Word 97 uses less CPU than Softmaker (I haven’t installed Abiword, so can’t compare)
5) Even a couple of minutes of suspend greatly reduces running temperatures
Using suspend out of the box will crash the S10 upon return. But from the Ubuntu forums, I found that if you run the command
acpi_sleep=nonvs
in a script in /root/Startup, suspend functions well. Ubuntu forums suggest putting that command in grub, but my frugal install uses syslinux.cfg and I’m uncertain where to safely put it.
I wrote a HowTo about Dpup Exprimo and the S10-3t:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=614443
And its setup is pertinent with this Exprimo flavor as well.
Many thanks, as always, to pemasu, for crafting these fine systems,
Jake

Subject description: GIT for 5x14? |
|
The GIT resources that are displayed in Puppy Package Manager are unclear and numerous.
I went to the GIT site and they offer the following downloads:

http://git-scm.com/download/linux
Will any of these work as-is with 5x14?
Or do they require conversion of some sort?

Is git-core all I need for command line exercises with git?
Will this work directly with dpup Exprimo 5x14?
| Quote: | Debian/Ubuntu
$ apt-get install git-core |
I don't see a way to point gongetit at a non-Debian or Ubuntu repository.

after reading reinstalled 5x14 . the first time installed maybe used it for some days. have been using 3.1.10.3 off and on for some time. Wow was i impressed with how fast everything excutes. ff was particularly fast even after upgrading installing my bookmarks and prefs.js file.
this is on a hp g72 dual p6100 laptop couple years old now. closing the lid did go to suspension and raising showed the desktop with frisbee makiing a connection quickly.
here #suspend from console does nothing but leave it blinking.
think will start using it as can find no advantage to 3.1.10.3 and cooler running temps = longer laptop life. thanks

Hi, jim3630,
Glad to hear it's working out. Re suspend from console; I have trouble with that too, even with the acpi_sleep command already running.
Since I'm doin' the frugal install thing with the same Plug-n-stay Verbatim USB, I can't see much difference in speed b/w 5.14 and 5.3.*. Both pretty quick, but heat control much more manageable with older kernel.
I like to resurrect old laptops, always using a puppy flavor. I'm glad that 5.14 allows the same for the S10.

The PET created a bunch of .ko, bin, etc files which it lists in file in /root/bin/
I am not sure to what I am supposed to point to ...
I tried changing menu.lst from /dpup5x14/vmlinux to /boot/vmlinuz but got "Error 15: File not found"
So, I tried Link Relative to the /dpup5x14/ and that failed, so I tried Link Absolute, and that was accepted but still failed with the same error - this time I could not edit Grub on the fly and had to boot into an older version I hadn't yet deleted, fix Grub ... but when I went to copy the /boot/vmlinux file to /dpup5x14/ I was unable to see it.
For some reason the 3.1.10 vmlinux in /boot/ under dpup5x14 is invisible in dpup5x13 and Fluppy 013.
Why would that be the case?
I will drag the saved dpup5x14 vmlinux back into place so I may reboot that reason but am finding this to be a weird ...
EDIT: Back in dpup5x14 I copied the /boot/vmlinux to /dpup5x14 then rebooted.
I got a "Dumping last lines of /tmp/bootinit.log" and several lines of pink text about mount errors followed by a "Dumping last lines of kernel log" and more pink text about journaling the "Pausing for 60 seconds ..." then "Performing a 'switch_root' the "Kernel panic ..." etc.
BTW1: That locked up my Samsung NB30 netbook so badly that only pulling the battery allowed me to reboot.
BTW2: The following is my Grub entry. If I want to engage the 3.1.10 Kernel do I need to only change kernel (hd0,1)/dpup5x14/vmlinuz TO kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz or do I need to change something more?

initrd (hd0,1)/dpup5x14/initrd.gz
# Linux bootable partition config ends |
So, where did I go wrong and how do I get the newer kernel to play nicely with fpup5x14, please?
Yes, everything for me is more complicated ...

To put it really simply......installing a kernel pet in a frugal install doesn't work.Period.Those pets are intended to be used in a Woof build.It is certainly possible to unsquash the sfs and replace the drivers and firmware,then resquash the sfs and then change the kernel and edit the initrd.gz and finally rebuild the iso ..... but its a bit more than installing a pet.
The easiest thing.if you need a newer kernel is to just make a new install with one of the other versions I linked to. Exprimo is basically Exprimo is basically Exprimo...... the other versions are basically the same as 5.X.14, just built with a newer Woof and the appropriate newer kernel/drivers/firmware. Any app that worked in 5.X.14 should still work in the newer kernel versions....excluding drivers which are kernel dependent.
Lastly, because of the different kernel/firmware/drivers I would have my doubts about a simple upgrade...I'd probably do a fresh install.
YMMV naturally.HTH.

MythTV Subject description: Setup backend? |
|
A helpful Forum member provided a PET to update the repository listing - thanks!
(I, of course, cannot immediately locate the URL for credit and a link.)
I grabbed MythTV and loaded it - and it ran cleanly.
Now it's asking a bunch of questions about settings for the "backend".
I tried to figure it out from this site: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_mythtvsetup
It asks for language then SAVE.
Popup says "No UPnP", clicked OK.
SETTINGS
Hostname default localhost, I tried 127.0.0.1
Port default 3306, I also tried 6543 and 6544.
Database name: mythconverg
User: mythtv
Password: mythtv
SAVE
[ ] Use custom identifier for frrintend preferences
[ ] Enable database server wakeup
SAVE
Popup: "Cannot connect to port 3306" (also tried 6543 and 6544)
WDYT?

Any ideas as to why MythTV, downloaded from the Puppy Package Manager-linked repositories would have failed to execute these instructions correctly, please?

I need MySQL to get MythTV working.
It doesn't show up as an option in Puppy Package Manager.
A search brought up a 2009 thread about Hiawatha, which installs MySQL, but I don't want to create a mess with an old PET not made for Exprimo and containing lots more than just MySQL:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=633613#633613
Where might I find a PET or SFS for MySQL, please?

JWM: Missing nolist option in /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal? Subject description: Can't hide applications in jwm taskbar |
|
In this dpup exprimo, even with pfix=ram install, I can't get the nolist option to work. In older jwms, for example, in /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal, this would work to hide xhippo mp3 player in the jwm taskbar:
<Group>
<Name>xhippo</Name>
<Class>xhippo</Class>
<Option>nolist</Option>
</Group>
At first, I thought it was xhippo-specific error, but with a fresh install of dpup exprimo and using this, for example:
<Group>
<Name>Pdisk</Name>
<Class>Pdisk</Class>
<Option>nolist</Option>
</Group>
I'm still not able to hide Pdisk in the jwm taskbar.
Can anybody else replicate this, or suggest a workaround?
Thanks,
Jake

Jakfish. I am not expert in jwm tags. So how I did it. I checked the version of jwm, it was 574. Then I downloaded that source tar ball from Joe Wing`s site and extracted it. There is example.jwmrc and from there I found:
<Group>
<Name>gkrellm</Name>
<Option>nolist</Option>
<Option>sticky</Option>
</Group>
so...just test with:
<Group>
<Name>xhippo</Name>
<Option>nolist</Option>
<Option>sticky</Option>
</Group>
I just wonder how do you pop xhippo up again ? Or is this shippo (swallowed hippo)
The example file for future reference has been attached. Remove the phony .gz

Hi, pemasu,
Your new commands work! Perhaps there was some kind of un-noted change in later versions of jwm that now make my script obsolete (because my original jwm commands work in jwm versions in puppeee and in 4.31).
Yes, xhippo disappears completely if minimized. But since I have xbindkeys programmed for xhippo's basic commands, that's fine; in fact, it's convenient.
I can post those xhippo/xbindkeys commands if you need them.
Many thanks, once again, for your fast help. I searched everywhere, but could not find what you did.
Jake
P.S. in dpup exprimo, is it possible to copy all sfs files to RAM when booting? Something like jemimah's RAMBOOT app for puppy 4.31?

Jakfish. No. Dpup`s have standard init script. And will have. I use the latest available woof with its scripts. Ramboot possibility would mean editing init script in initrd.gz and that is out of scope. I think that Puppee and Fluppy are the only ones which had that Jemimah`s ramboot option. Now that there is heaps of ram...it would not be bad idea to awaken it again....but for me...it would mean that Barry Kauler would accept it to the woof.
