From the new Distrowatch Weekly..
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20120618
Puppy Linux, the most popular of the ultra-small Linux distributions on the market, has often been criticised by reviewers for always "running as root" and for disregarding one of the most basic among the UNIX security principles. Now some community members on the project's forum responded with a special Puppy derivative called "Fatdog64", a 64-bit Puppy build with extra applications and, most importantly, an experimental multi-user setup. This beta release includes Linux kernel 3.4.2, SeaMonkey 2.10, Flash Player 11.2.202.236, and numerous bug fixes since alpha 2. From the announcement: "James and myself are happy to announce Fatdog64-600 beta 1. Here are the changes since alpha2: SFS works with multisession; add libdbus_glib; uses BusyBox blkid (faster) instead of util-linux blkid; volume label display on drive icons can be turned off; bug fix with first-time session save; hardinfo patched - does not crash, show Fatdog64 version; Windows-K key is shortcut for xkill (to kill windows apps); new control panel - all system/settings apps are now here; QuickApps - create application shortcuts; urxvt 9.15 (without Perl extension); command-line tool to split Fatdog humongous initrd to standard Puppy initrd for faster USB boot; experimental multi-user (some applications are still broken; some PET packages do not support non-root)."

One more beta release that will contain the kernel that will be used in final. Then a release candidate, that will be renamed as final if it's OK. Right now, this is the plan if no big problems turn up along the way.

Big thanks to all the folks testing.

NVIDIA

Pemasu and others have come up with a great pet to install the latest NVIDIA driver. It would be great if this also works for Fatdog. Is it safe to try?

Cheers,

Left Handed Mouse?

#107 Post by oldroy »

Kudos to Kirk and James Bond on the latest Fatdog. Fatdog -521 has been a favorite of mine ever since it came out.

I tried running 600a2 beta in memory and everything works except for the missing mouse keyboard wizard. A minor complaint unless you are left handed.

Hi , everybody ! :D

I started using Fatdog with 521 and I was pleased because is fast , runs in RAM and it's portable and made a custom version :D , where I managed , among other things , to make it start from a flash drive directly onto hdmi audio since I'm using a TV as monitor over an hdmi cable. Later I saw that instead of reboot I could simply use RestartX , to switch the sound cards from Multiple Sound Card Wizard .
The fact is I wanted to do it without making a save file for not increasing the custom version .

Now , Fatdog 600 evolves and I gave it some tries . The wpa supplicant does not work , I'm using Network Manager so it's fine. On Youtube , on both Seamonkey and Firefox the videos were running like FastForward with no sound at all , I checked up Flash Player properties and updated it , and did the same for the browsers : now works fine.

I can't pass this one : After I switch the sound cards from Multiple Sound Card Wizard and unmute the digital channel from AlsaMixer , using RestartX doesn't make it work . No sound over HDMI :!:
Is there any  way doing it without making a save file and reboot ???

Hi Nooby,

You may not know this, but SM (really Mozilla) is the follow-on to the Netscape contribution to the browser community.

The reason so many still use it is that, like Netscape, it is a full-featured advance subsystem....not just a browser. It, to date, still maintains fidelity with Firefox, Thunderbird, etc which are the components of SM broken up and supported as separate packages.

The weight of SM is not that extravagant for the functionality it provides the Puppy development community and the users. Thus, it promotes the lightweight system and the subsystem integration for a great OOTB experience.

I am/have been a user of Netscape, Mozilla, SM and FF for as long as I can remember when I became befuddled with Microsoft's IE. And, I love the fact that the SM developers pride themselves with the speed, size, and integration that they provide all who want to use SM.

As a FF and Thunderbird user as well, you might want to look at those items which provide fidelity with SM such that you can easily pull/push settings, bookmarks, and etc in both directions.

Thus the decision by any developer to stay consistent with Barry's view of an small RAM-based integrated distro displays that integration through its design for user understanding and use. While also, the Puppy developers have made constant strides to insure we have a one of the widest selections of browser anywhere; namely, IRON, Chrome, Opera, Dillo, Tor, Midori, etc.

I don't encourage anyone follow my behavior, but, I do use 4 different browsers because of some unique differences where on certain sites things work and render differently to the browser's benefit. I have come to understand this and have each browser bookmarked accordingly.

This post is just my observations that I have seen in the community since joining. In no way am I speaking for any developer or user.

But, hoping this could be some understanding for our benefit.

The standard ISO works fine when using the Analog Audio , that is mobo's audio .
Both of the problems I've noticed , happen only when I switch the sound card to use hdmi , that is I have no sound and Flash Player on the browser works like a FLASH .
I think it's the GPU that does not go along very well with Fatdog 600b1 . Actually on FD 521 the ati-catalyst pet was installed .
Maybe a similar pet for FD 600 could be on the way ?

hey. There's a pet package in the 600 repository named linux_rt-3.4.2-rt10.pet . Is that a real time kernel patch? Or what is it?

Gobbi, I don't have/use HDMI myself so I can't really test that, but kirk may be able to help. I think he has similar setup.

The video driver pets will come when we finalise the kernel for final (that could come during the final beta or final release-candidate depending on how stable the release is). It is confusing and isn't worth the confusion to release the drivers now when we still change kernels with every release --- because these drivers are tied tightly to kernel version.

Yes 8)

EDIT: It is the kernel, patched with real-time patch. Just install and enjoy. Note: rt kernel are usually less stable than standard kernel unless you know how to tweak them.

Just use a special savefile for testing and don't use your regular ones, so if you screw up you can always restore :D

I took a look at the code in shinobar's and pemasu's nvidia installer and it doesn't look too good for fatdog I'm afraid. For a start there's a 32 bit binary included so you'd need those libs. Also there is a lot of woof specific code in there, fine for slacko, upup, wary, racy and exprimo, will likely fall down in fatdog.

Guys, hope you can bear with a naive noob.

All this trouble with 64Bit???

Would it be very demanding to make a 32-bit version
and then you would have plenty of time to get the 64 bit
version totally or absolutely compatible with all drivers
and such complications?

Having a multiuser Puppy that just works is a sensation.
So why add the complexity of 64-bit compatibility from Scratch?

I "vote for" to have both 32-bit and 64-bit and most being used to
32-bit do look for that and the enthusiasts have the patience to
wait for the 64-bit to come a bit later? Only my ignorant rant.

Edit
Here is one reason I don't like SeaMonkey. AutoUpdate
and it remember too much even when one tells it to delete history.

Read here

Quote/
For some years now I've had Seamonkey set to delete browsing history when shutting down, as well as most other residues of online activity.

So I was dumbfounded when I happened to open the tab:

Tools/Data Manager

to see a list of domains that seems to include most, if not all, of the sites I've visited over the past several years!

At the bottom of the page I see a "remove" tab, but it's greyed out.

What use is clearing your history if every domain you've visited is shown and can't be removed?

Do other browsers have this same function?

RestartX doesn't make it work . No sound over HDMI Exclamation
Is there any Idea way doing it without making a save file and reboot
That's due to a change in the ATI kernel module. Some cards have problems with sound over HDMI, so they disabled it by default. You can put radeon.audio=1 on the kernel boot line to enable it. The sound card wizard does something similar, but you would need a savefile for that to work.
I tried running 600a2 beta in memory and everything works except for the missing mouse keyboard wizard. A minor complaint unless you are left handed.
I've modified pupx to support that. it will be in the next release. Until then you can open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

 xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"
