I take it you will next release this with Firefox?

Here are some of the slight modifications
that would make it similar to the popular 1.09CE but for the 2.xx series

Is there anywhere a list of what is included and what isn't?

It is easier to say what was taken out. . .

#4 Post by gplsoftware.org »

It is easier to tell you what was taken out:

SeaMonkey
Abiword
Gnumeric
Xfinance
All of the games except the mine one

The idea was to create a barebones version of Puppy that you can build on top of. Mark has two very good dotpups for doing this:

MegaPup003
http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/Megapu ... README.htm

OpenOffice.org
http://www.dotpups.de/dotpups/Office/Op ... 03/Dotpup/

You can buy software to install such as the SoftMaker products:
http://www.softmaker.com/

The puppylinux.org wiki is a good source for instructions on how to add software such as the FireFox and Opera web browsers:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyLinuxMainPage

Of coarse you have PupGet built into Puppy as well.

A couple of thoughts

You might try creating the barebones with the "Unleashed" packages, the resulting size will be smaller (As 54MB seems big considering what you took out).

Also, is the Puppy printing functionality still tied into Abiword ?

If so removing it may cause a problem ... Or if printing is not important you can remove the rest of the printing stuff (which would save even more room).

How I created PuppyLite 2.02

#7 Post by gplsoftware.org »

I created PuppyLite with Puppy Unleashed. Printing should still work because I included Gimp-print. I actually included everything, except:

Abiword
Bubbles
Gemgame
Gnumeric
GTKfish
Rubix
SeaMonkey
Xfinance

I think the large size is because I left Inkscape in.

UPDATE:

Well, I tried it and you are right. Printing must be tied to Abiword. Let me re-build with Abiword and remove Inkscape (and some of the calculators). I will keep you updated. . .

QUESTION:

For those that have already downloaded, will installing Abiword with pupget fix the print problem?

Puppy Lite

Really like the "Lego" concept to get rid of the excess bloat and customize your own distro from a base. I used the last barebones edition to create my last custom distro and it worked great. There were redundant apps, like editors, that I would have also liked to remove to save space. I'll wait until you replace AbiWord and will give it a shot.

The more things change ...

#9 Post by alienjeff »

... the more they remain the same.

With all due respect to all involved, 54M is a far cry from a "bare bones" distribution.

There's a lot of reinventing the wheel going on of late.

It depends. . .

#10 Post by gplsoftware.org »

It depends on what you call re-inventing the wheel. There are only three versions of Puppy 2.02 right now. The are as follows:

Mr. Kauler's - SeaMonkey
Mr. Murga's - Opera
Mr. Richardson's - Dillo

As far as I am concerned, versions that are not up to date, don't count.

I was thinking the same, I wouldn't call MeanPuppy bare-bones, nd that is 52Mb.

And I don't quite understand what place InkScape would have in bare-bones ...

Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with re-inventing the wheel ... It gives people more choice, and as long as things stay compatible the more the merrier.

Actually seems that the most reasonable way of going on is to have a "lego" version of puppy..
the unleashed version is still not so user friendly for the very noobye..
it should be something like:
this is the core, add what package u like and then i will make an iso, u will burn and have your personal puppy.
but that needs a central package repository with ALL the available packages, up to date, and categorized well with extensive explanations..

I totally agree with Nevermore. The ideal distribution would be, in my opinion, one that includes only the very fundamental components and provides easy means to install (and uninstall) as many software components as possible.

Other distributions usually come with a lot of software pre-installed, but in most cases it is possible to uninstall unnecessary applications and libraries using a package manager.

This Lite version of Puppy is the closest to that ideal. But a major problem in Puppy that still makes it less friendly to less sophisticated users is many of the packages in the repositories used by its package manager are not up to date, and that although many useful packages have been created by users, one has to search these forums to find them. If people already took the trouble to create packages that have been proven to be working properly, why not make them available through the package manager? I believe that this is one easily removable obstacle currently hindering Puppy from becoming an option taken seriously by average users who may rightly appreciate its other features.

Barebones plus selection is the idea behind "meaty" the CE or Community Edition project

"This is great! But I don't think it's appropriate to consider me as a project leader.
I'll focus on the core puppy, that is, a BareBones, and the CE is putting the flesh on it." Barry Kauler
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/MeatyInfo

When BareBones is released
the major and most important packages are here:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/CommunityEdition

The above wiki page is in HTML format (something I do not normally encourage)
The reason is BareBonesCE is designed to use DIllo and have this as its default offline page (for fast loading)

The links are mostly to easy to use / edit and improve
Web pages

PuppyLite is a small Puppy that works and can be added to
Same with Mean Puppy
We have a small and fast KDE Puppy
Hopefully more to come - perhaps a small Gnome . . .

lobster, what i meant was a bit different: i am thinking about a "puppy cd wizard" which will help you to prepare your own flavour of puppy yourself..
that means that i can start the puppy preparing program as a bootup disk or from puppy itself, or from winzoze, and it will help me create my own flavour of puppy iso, which then i will use (that's for having the great ramdisk option available, i prefer to run puppy entirely in ram with no packages on hdd unless absolutely needed, for total portability and speed)..
CE edition is very nice, but still i cant choose what i want myself, then make an iso, and burn my personal tailored puppy :P
btw i think is needed a page in the wiki where ALL the packages should be linked to, in categories, and witch explanation of what they do and what they need...

That is a good idea.

Barrys CD which you can order or download comes with the unleashed programs that would allow this process.
http://www.puppyos.com/download/downpage.htm

A large ISO with all the Browsers, Office, Graphic programs etc with a script to create the Puppy of choice could be done. Are you up for it? Who is?

even a dvd iso would be great..
or maybe a program which automagically connect and download what is needed..this way will be even easier even for dialup users that can't download a whole dvd iso...
i cant work on it now, i am in china for work, and wont be back before the mid of september..i am only with my working lap and nothing else, i am already lucky i can use wifi for internet :D

Well, the problem with getting all the packages togeather is that we have no official place to put them and there are tons out there, and nobody knows about all of them. MU hosts a bunch of them at his dotpups.de site, which is probably the closest thing to an official repository. I believe he's also working on some stuff for the .pet system, which is a better version of the pupget system, allowing the same packages that you use in pupget and unleashed to be clicked on to install, along with some upgrades. When that gets sorted out, we can start phasing it into puppy. Then developers will be encouraged to use the .pet format (and to use it correctly), and we can try to keep the packages in a couple key repositories. That will allow you to simply download the package and click it, use a pupget-like interface, or easily remaster a Puppy using unleashed with the packages (something that doesn't work with dotpups).
