How to recover files, directories?

#1 Post by shoutcrown »

Hello guys!

This happened today on Slacko Puppy Linux:

My USB flash drive (Hp 16gb) was connected to the laptop, (I was editing some files, I mean they were opened). Suddenly this Hp 16gb was disconnected automatically (I didn't move or touch it). The icon disappeared from desktop (sdb1) and appeared again like sdc1.

Now there are a couple of directories which can't be opened (but I wasn't editing those files and directories). It appears an exclamation icon ("!"). The properties show "Error: Input/output error" and the "Permissions" aren't checked and can't be changed.

I rebooted this laptop many times, but there is the same problem

PLEASE! Can anybody tell me how to recover those directories? (the files within those directories are very important for me and I don't have any other backup). As I told the rest of directories and files are ok, the issue is only with a couple of directories

By the way there is an excellent program called "HP Disk Low Level Format Tool" which can fix damaged USB Flash drives. Is there a similar program for Slacko Puppy Linux?

Thanks a lot! bye

You can try this:
TestDisk & PhotoRec
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28453
The Package contains BOTH apps, although named only testdisk.

Read carefully what each program does.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

hello!
bigpup:
You can try this:
TestDisk & PhotoRec
PhotoRec is recommended to recover files. After all It can't recover the files I lost but It's true It can recover everything else (It takes about 5 hours). What a curious!

I formatted this USB Flash Drive on Windows XP a long time ago. That is the filesystem is FAT32. I think all of the flash drives have this filesystem.

I would prefer to get a program for puppy linux (no windows)

This is a big disgrace!!! I never thought to lose those important files on Puppy Linux

#7 Post by shoutcrown »

hi everybody!

some say photorec is to recover files and testdisk to recover partitions...

so first i used photorec, but i couldn recover the files i wanted... (besides the recovered files were stored without the original order)

finally i had to use testdisk, and I succeed!!! (there were some confusions to use it, but now I have every file I lost). it is amazing because the recovered files have the original order

thanks a lot for help me!
