The idea was to create a barebones version of Puppy that you can build on top of. Mark has two very good dotpups for doing this:

A couple of thoughts

You might try creating the barebones with the "Unleashed" packages, the resulting size will be smaller (As 54MB seems big considering what you took out).

Also, is the Puppy printing functionality still tied into Abiword ?

If so removing it may cause a problem ... Or if printing is not important you can remove the rest of the printing stuff (which would save even more room).

I created PuppyLite with Puppy Unleashed. Printing should still work because I included Gimp-print. I actually included everything, except:

Abiword
Bubbles
Gemgame
Gnumeric
GTKfish
Rubix
SeaMonkey
Xfinance

I think the large size is because I left Inkscape in.

UPDATE:

Well, I tried it and you are right. Printing must be tied to Abiword. Let me re-build with Abiword and remove Inkscape (and some of the calculators). I will keep you updated. . .

Really like the "Lego" concept to get rid of the excess bloat and customize your own distro from a base. I used the last barebones edition to create my last custom distro and it worked great. There were redundant apps, like editors, that I would have also liked to remove to save space. I'll wait until you replace AbiWord and will give it a shot.

It depends on what you call re-inventing the wheel. There are only three versions of Puppy 2.02 right now. The are as follows:

Mr. Kauler's - SeaMonkey
Mr. Murga's - Opera
Mr. Richardson's - Dillo

As far as I am concerned, versions that are not up to date, don't count.

Actually seems that the most reasonable way of going on is to have a "lego" version of puppy..
the unleashed version is still not so user friendly for the very noobye..
it should be something like:
this is the core, add what package u like and then i will make an iso, u will burn and have your personal puppy.
but that needs a central package repository with ALL the available packages, up to date, and categorized well with extensive explanations..

I totally agree with Nevermore. The ideal distribution would be, in my opinion, one that includes only the very fundamental components and provides easy means to install (and uninstall) as many software components as possible.

Other distributions usually come with a lot of software pre-installed, but in most cases it is possible to uninstall unnecessary applications and libraries using a package manager.

This Lite version of Puppy is the closest to that ideal. But a major problem in Puppy that still makes it less friendly to less sophisticated users is many of the packages in the repositories used by its package manager are not up to date, and that although many useful packages have been created by users, one has to search these forums to find them. If people already took the trouble to create packages that have been proven to be working properly, why not make them available through the package manager? I believe that this is one easily removable obstacle currently hindering Puppy from becoming an option taken seriously by average users who may rightly appreciate its other features.
