What are the upgrade recommendations for 2.00 & 2.01?

Is it best to backup, wipe, and install?

Thanks! doc

Are you asking about live-cd, hd installation, flash installation?
I don't think in any case that you have to do anything special.
Just upgrade.

For live-cd, just boot the new cd.

I tried live-CD and it was fine. I am doing a HDD install.

I had understood that some special attention was to be paid in 2.02 to some of the bugs in
2.00 and 2.01, especially as they apply to a HDD install.

While I look forward to a mini-pc using memory cards right now we have three desktops
and one laptops and all but one pc runs Puppy as a HDD install -- it is preferable here to
dealing with booting from a CD all the time.

In the past the recommended upgrade instructions have recommended a clean install, do
I gather that such is no longer necessary? That is great!

We have one desktop on 2.00, one on 2.01, and a laptop on 2.00 -- if a simple upgrade on top of any of them is stable and trouble-free then I will start tonight with the CD I just burned!

Thanks! doc

My understanding is the upgrade improvements only apply when using the pup_save.3fs file not for the full hard drive install. Maybe that could be a future option for the universal installer to upgrade a type 2 install.

Bill

EDIT: Well I just tested it out upgrading from 2.01 to 2.02 and found out the universal installer already has a button to upgrade the full install and it all happened very fast and I rebooted and everything works.

Well, it appeared to go well on my laptop until I rebooted and tried wireless Internet access.

The 2.02 upgrade broke the setup of my internally mounted NL-5354MP Plus Aries2(F) -
1.00 The chip is labeled Atheros AR5213A-00 A19911C 1804

I am currently running with a eth0 hardwire connection from the other internal nic.

I am guessing I just need to find my notes and re-do the tweaks that got it working before.

QUESTION: When completing Puppy Universal Installer to perform an upgrade does one
need to SAVE or Exit Without Saving? The instructions are very unclear.

Thanks! doc

I'm booting from CD, so some of the issues might be different. However the upgrade also broke my wireless (also an Atheros chipset, but running ndiswrapper because I couldn't get madwifi to run reliably). It turned out I had added a kludge to /etc/modprobe.conf to get it working, and this was overwritten by the upgrade. So I just copied to kludge from my old modprobe.conf to the new one, and it started working again.

I think it makes a lot of sense to boot from CD. I just copy the pup202.sfs from the CD to my hard drive, so that when I boot it is found there and loaded from that device, which makes the boot very fast. Seems like upgrades would be more painless that way too.

Yesterday I upgraded from 2.01 to 2.02 on my laptop. My fear was that I would lose my wireless internet connection which I had had to set up manually. I need not have worried. The upgrade saved my customised scripts and everything worked perfectly.

Just upgraded one of our desktop pc's from 2.01 to 2.02 and the upgrade broke the modem ...

EDIT: Broke the NIC setup not the modem ... pre-coffee typo!

... setup on it as well and the NIC setup cannot find the NIC on the list.

There was a series of error message during the load of 2.02 from the CD and again on
reboot. Something about " ... disagrees about version sysmbol struct_module"

What's up with that?

I am guessing that is the source of the problem but have no idea how to fix it.

Help? doc

Anyone know to what this boot error refers?

I have tried the 2.02 upgrade two additional times and the problem does not resolve.

The children are anxious to have full use of their computer again.

Help?

Just went to back up some files on the Puppy 2.02 desktop and could not get the portable
USB HDD to be recognized so tried the USB memory stick.

When both failed I ran USBview -- no USB module is loaded.

One more thing that upgrading from 2.01 to 2.02 broke. :-(

Is there a simple step-by-step process by which I may force the USB module(s) to load so
I may do the save please?

The plan was/is to wipe the HDD and do a clean install of 2.02 instead.

Meanwhile I am going to download and burn a fresh 2.02 CD ... just in case!

Is it possible that loading the old vs new SDL libraries may have messed up the USB modules on the desktop PC and the upgrade to 2.02 didn't restore things?

Also, I have observed that an old problem returned with 2.01 and 2.02 that 2.00 had fixed.

When the Caps Lock key was pressed prior to 2.00 it too three taps on the Caps Lock key
on my laptop and on the desktops to turn it off. With 2.00 it only took one. With 2.01 and
2.02 it is back to three taps to reset.

No big deal but some change between the versions happened.

Thanks! doc

I have noticed that about the caplock key too. It is an annoyance.

There was a mention in one of the threads around here (try search) that a "modprobe usbhid" needs to be done in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local script. Wonder if that would fix your USB problem?

<later>
Woops, I guess the above is just for the USB mouse. Maybe some other modprobe... is "modprobe ehci-hcd" the one?

On that other thing about "struct_module", can you do a "dmesg" command and post here some of the lines around where that message comes out, so we can get the context?

I downloaded and burned the Puppy 2.02 ISO again then ran the Puppy Universal
Installer and selected Upgrade to overwrite the previous Puppy 2.02 Upgrade.

Same errors.

dmsg reads:
input: ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse as /class/input/input1
EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
usbcore: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module
... this repeats for many modules

I ran e2fsck --pDFSV

I received no errors, just e2fsck 1.38 (30-Jun-2005)

Also, added modprobe ehci-hcd to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

I rebooted and nothing has improved, same errors, USB Viewer still finds nothing.

Jessie and Barry have been plugging away at filling the USB holes in 2.0.2 lately:

Maybe your problem is just another manifestation of the USB issues many have been dealing with.
