Quote: | Another incredible thing for me is that we now have a fully functional Office suite to business standards with in-built offline help, AS WELL AS the normal stuff, all in an ~350MB download |
In a future version perhaps, no time soon, it might be fun to see how small we could get it without losing any function. BigPup has already suggested removing Abiword and gnumeric from the Libre versions. One advantage we have over other Linux distros is that even the Libre versions can run from ram, therefore they can be quicker--which solves one problem I have always had with Libre/Open office. Another obvious advantage is that Puppy is lean to begin with.
I am interested in your comment ICPUG about java and Base--perhaps java should be included in all Libre versions for full functionality.

I certainly hope that we will see Libre versions of the official Puppies--I regard Lupu Libre as kind of a test bed where we can figure out such things as including java, etc. I am developing a system for easily making Libre versions of other Puppies.

Don't believe in multiple cores, never use them. For Puppies it's overkill^2 and defeats the prime directive.
Never use wireless, either. Keep safe, keep wired! Sagger rules!
It was a 754 that exhibited the shutdown feature. Haven't had time to apply your patch(es) yet. Puppies coming so thick and fast only have a Saluki 20 as a current release on FULL. Not seen the shutdown item on any other Puppy/HW and I've tried all of 'em.

Interesting. Ran the patch "shutdown_exit_fix_for_all_woof-based_puppies-1.pet" on above machine. Menu shutdown now removes tray completely - nothing else. CTRL-ALT-BKSPCE, then <poweroff> guarantees return to desktop every time!
Later: did the Saluki 20 - 21 upgrade (FULL). Whatever that does, it overwrote the above grief and [so far!] it's shutting down to order! Should be a clue in there somewhere for rerwin/Jemimah?

Where was JAVA fixed |
|
playdayz wrote: | Another incredible thing for me is that we now have a fully functional Office suite to ... as including java, etc. ... | Thanks Playdayz
This integration is coming at the right time, for, Internet rates are at an all-time high, and 2006+ PCs, are more than a match for the Office Performance we get from your offering in Puppy+3HD+...
Questions
- As was reported to you, there is a problem with JAVA as was delivered with your first Office PUP ("lupulibre"). Today, I noticed a version for 3HD. Did you or someone "FIX" the JAVA problem that was reported? And, if so, which versions contain that fix in PUP528 and 3HD?
- Will LupuPlusLIbre update have the JAVA fixed in it?
Thanks in advance

My comment on Java and Base is based on the information from:
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/system-requirements/
Namely:
For certain features of the software - but not most - Java is required. Java is notably required for Base.
Personally, I like a fully functioning LibreOffice so I think Java should be included. When you have done that I don't see much point in LupuLibre + Java. Is it much MB less than LupuPLusLibre?
I will be using Lupu and LupuPLusLibre. I do see the point of LupuPlus for those that need the drivers but not LibreOffice though so maybe support of 3 options is valid.
I think you are in danger of trying to provide too many options Playdayz, especially with 3HD as well. I don't want you to get burnout - you are too valuable!
I think the ultimate solution would be to modularise.
You have Lupu and 3HD bases and then have a Plus sfs and a LibreOffice/Java sfs. You choose the base sfs you want and whichever addon sfs(s) you want. Not sure how you get all the sfs to load into RAM though (if you have enough that is). Now everything can be kept up-to-date at once. Should LibreOffice get an update all you have to do is update the LibreOffice/Java sfs and not (as at the moment) LupuLibre, LupuPlusLibre and 3HDLibre.
These are not requests - just floating ideas.

Discovery:
I believe I (and others with Intel Sandybridge 6 Series /c200 chips) could get sound in Lupu 5.2.8 if
Code: | # cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24. |
as in Racy, Sulu, and Upup Precise instead of:
Code: | # cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21. |
in Lupu 528
Is that change do-able? .....Please?

Found this statement on Java in the LibreOffice Getting Started Guide.
Quote: | Some LibreOffice features (wizards and the HSQLDB database engine) require that the Java
Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.6.x or higher be installed on your computer. Although LibreOffice will work without Java support, some features will not be available. If you have an older PC and do not
need the features requiring the JRE, you can disable it to speed up the loading of the program. |
Quote: | Base (database)
Base provides tools for day-to-day database work within a simple interface. It can create and edit
forms, reports, queries, tables, views, and relations, so that managing a connected database is much the same as in other popular database applications. Base provides many new features, such as the ability to analyze and edit relationships from a diagram view. Base incorporates HSQLDB as its default relational database engine. It can also use dBASE, Microsoft Access, MySQL, or Oracle, or any ODBC-compliant or JDBC-compliant database. Base also provides support for a subset of ANSI-92 SQL. |

Re: JRE or JAVA PETs issues in Puppy LInux distros |
|
gcmartin wrote: | I have discovered a problem with JAVA support in latest version of LupuPLUS-Libre.
It is described here. And,is similar with some past efforts. |
I have not reviewed the LupuPLUS-Libre, but as for the jre-1.6.0.22.pet the quiqkpet offers in the lupu-528-005, there is an issue for RAM mode, that is without pupsave.
Some pet packages assumes you already have pupsave. The installed files without pupsave will be disappear after you make pupsave.
Recent version of PPM checks it out and warns as follows, but the PPM in the lupu-528-005 does not.

Please fix Java support |
|
My 2 cents:
Half request, half need.
Please fix java support for Base...or post a message when it is run as to what is necessary to activate it. I use a commercial "base", and would love to be able to finally have a full database in Puppy. I tested what I could. Seems to work better than older versions. I am sure a lot of folks will use this. The easier it is to use, the more folks will use it, I am sure. Thanks.
Above all THANKS for all the hard work on Puppy!

Java is included in Lupu Plus Libre. This is kind of new so we are trying to figure out what config works best. AFAIK Java should work with Base in Lupu Plus Libre--maybe you can test. You can also add Java to Lupu Libre with shinobar's sfs http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1888808982&t=61287
If you add java to Lupu Libre you will need to go to Tools -> Options -> Java and enable it. I am thinking now that all Libre future versions should include java, refer to BigPup's findings above..

Where is that please vtpup? Have you tested that?
I will make a pet out of shinboar's latest java sfs and put it in PPM--as soon as we figure out whether and how best to put the java executable in the path. It is preferred to use the sfs linked above.

Nothing shows at all. | Chris,
Please reboot and you should see wireless as detected by b43. On the initial boot, the proprietary driver, wl, is used. If it generates an error message in the log, the subsequent boot should try b43. This assumes playdayz included my latest Broadcom components as in the other 005s. I have not checked on what he included in 3HD.

I don't think so. You will have to install the pet.
