no sound with new pc intel 6 series / C200 chipset

#1 Post by atari »

Dear Puppy Community,

thank you for all the great work with this OS and the forum.

I have a new desktop pc. :D and hope puppy is working with it.

I have the newest Puppy 528 on a cd and now boot from a usb stick.

The only real issue is the sound device.
I can not find a solution here in the forum, after searching.

Alsamixer is started and closes instantly.
Alsa sound mixer can not find hardware.

In the menu bar is not visible the speaker symbol.

Attached a screenshot of my system diagnostic.

I hope for a solution, thanks a lot.

looks like you need the module snd_hda_intel - the hda stands for high def audio

have you tried running the sound wizard-

puppymenu > setup > alsa sound wizard

Hmmmm, I've got the same problem -- didn't notice it at first because I hadn't run any sound apps on this new computer. (Acer Aspire 5349-2635)

So, Hardinfo shows this Intel 6 series /C200 v5 chipset, and I first tried the alsa wizard. No go.

Then manually tried modprobe snd_hda_intel. Also no go.

Then I tried adding that module to the boot list, and rebooting. Still no.

So that module (if it's correct) is probably not new enough on my system (Lupu 528 v5).

Any other suggestions? Besides changing distros, that is....

Can the module be updated? (just did that for the wireless module ath9k, and it worked for that)

btw, The chipset (card) is definitely not recognized -- alsa says no sound card detected and gnome alsa mixer is blank -- no controls. Regular alsa mixer closes immediately when selected.

Tried Racy 5.3 and sound now works.

I'd still like to get it working on Lupu, but failing that, I guess Racy is the OS of choice for this laptop.

Thanks bignono1, but I already tried that. No pci or pnp cards reported, and this definitely isn't a legacy card/computer.

No sound on Acer

#9 Post by mbiernat »

On 5.8. which I like, I do not have sound on an Acer 7750G becaue 'no supported pnp or pci'. After running the Wizard.

I am reading the forums and have not seen a real solution. I think new computers are no supported in terms of sound?

Any further ideas?

I assume you mean Puppy 5.28 lucid not 5.8?

Looks like a common problem with 5.28 and Acer laptops.

Have you got any more info about the specific audio hardware?

go to Puppy Menu > System > HardInfo

then look at Summary > Multimedia

anything reported?

---

Alternatively you tried Puppy 5.3 slacko?

They are a few pets to make Slacko more similar to Lucid here-

Sound not working specs Racy

#11 Post by mbiernat »

Thank you for the reply. And yes 5.2.8.

This is my is system information:

Audio device : Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)

-Multimedia-
Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic

1) I did hear someone got it working on an Acer, but they do not recall how.
2) I did try Slacko and Racy and the problem is when booting it stops at
#
No matter what I do it just stops at
#

I tried to login and it accepted my password but then
#
I tried xwin, ran through it and back to
#

I think one time in the past I did get it to go to the GUI, but I do not recall and think the sound did work.

I have been a Puppy user for a while, but had to replace my old computer and the problem is on the new one it has this sound or boot problem.

I love using puppy and even wrote a post about it singing praise ->
My Puppy Linux post

But I am a user and do not know all the ins and outs, I am sure I am missing something basic. If soemone could help me get some sound it would be appreciated.

@vtpup and mbiernat

Are you using the latest versions of 5.28, that's 5.28-005?

version 004 brought improvement to the sound wizard, for more info and for update pet or iso see-
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=70855
Version 004 updates: ... Gnome-alsamixer is included - this is the mixer for those with multiple sound cards - each is displayed in a tab. Remaster Pup has improvements by rerwin. ALSA Sound Wizard has many improvements and can be used to select the default sound card. alsa-info.sh to get alsa info (run in terminal). ...

I too have had sound problems with several PCs and a HP laptop.

This is with -003, I`m going to try -005.

Same here. Every version, past 5.2.5 (that I tried) has had the
sound problems on my Dell Netbook and Dell Latitude D400 laptop.
That's why I am sticking with 5.2.5 .

I can make the problem go away by using 5.2.8-x with a fresh Puppy save file.
The sound works fine, until I add my personal content and programs. I need
to do that so that I have Firefox, Chrome, Thunderbird, Addressbook, etc...
Therefore, I have to increase the pup save file size. After an indeterminate
amount of time, the sound icon disappears from the menubar, or exists
on the menubar in a "crossed out" state. After that occurance, I have never
been able to restore the sound by any means (Sound setup, retrovol,
alsamixer, etc..).

5.2.5 does not have this issue. So I keep using it.

Hi Sunburnt and ilanrab,

It could be instructive to know what audio hardware is in the computers with no sound or disappearing sound.

this can be found in PuppyMenu > System > System Status > HardInfo
then go to Summary > Multimedia

if it is the same chipset as vtpup and mbiernat it might be worth them trying 5.25

Hardware? It's in the title of this thread, presumably.

re. 5.25......5.28 Lucid caused problems with wirelesss (card unrecognized) as have all puppies I've tried prior to a 3.xkernel version. I doubt 5.25 will address the wireless problem, but I may try it out of curiosity to just check sound support. If it works it could point to the culprit in 5.28.
