Try this pet. It has the firmware your dmesg retquested.
Thanks, but error indication is same after installing pet.

Jim1911. I suppose you did remove the module first:
rmmod iwlwifi and loaded it: modprobe iwlwifi
and then run: dmesg
There is still that 4 version to test...if is possible to find that firmware.
And possiblity that the firmware version I found from rpm package is not suitable.

Also...could you check in dpup exprimo...what firmware version is loaded there. It would help a lot. If it is not too big trouble.

I've had some success by moving the iwlwifi firmware from /lib/modules/all-firmware/iwlwifi/lib/firmware/iwlwifi/ directly to /lib/firmware.

Test Precise-5.3.3.1-SCSI.iso

Type Install: UPGRADE to previous BK's Precise-5.2.52

Results: Everything updated just fine, all regular Puppy installed programs remained intact and those programs that didn't work properly in 5.2.25 now work as they should! The only 'self-installed' program that didn't work was 'Pwidgets' but that didn't work in 5.2.52 either?

The Mplayer with the new 3.3.2 kernel is just super, no more 'buffering' or stopping or fluttering of the videos tested from various sites that is so common on every other version of Puppy that I've tested to date!

To say the least, it's 'FAST'... I didn't think Puppy could get any faster than a few of the last recent versions I've tested... 'I was wrong... this Puppy really rocks for speed!!!'

Thanks for the explanation. Where does one find these "extra" files? Are they already in the "PrecisePup" and we have to put them in a different order?

Thanks in advance. BFN.

You just need to install tzdata package with PPM and you get full time zone data.

pemasu,

This may not be something to bring up, this far along in the process. Just an idea.
When Barry made Precise Puppy, it was my understanding that he did not try to do a complete build with Woof. Just did enough to test it out. So he left a lot out that a normal build would have.
If this is true.
Would it not be better to do a fresh complete build using Woof?
Start bug fixing that one.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Jim1911. From your dmesg, the relevant wireless information.
iwlwifi 0000:01:00.0: loaded firmware version 17.168.5.2 build 35905
[ 27.380075] wlan0: authenticate with e8:39:df:d8:99:f3 (try 1)
[ 27.382648] wlan0: authenticated
[ 27.382975] wlan0: associate with e8:39:df:d8:99:f3 (try 1)
[ 27.385160] wlan0: RX AssocResp from e8:39:df:d8:99:f3 (capab=0x431 status=0 aid=4)
[ 27.385168] wlan0: associated

So...the firmware in that puplet in use is...iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode

I suggest you to replace the iwlwifi content from that working puplet. So that we can eliminate the problem by non-working firmaware. Well of course it could be demand of newer firmware...which is not even available yet. There is coming 3 new firmwares from intellilinuxwireless soon....

I suppose it is wireless you want to get working. You posted about r8169 also and that is ethernet nic card.

Just replace the folder content of: /lib/modules/all-firmware/iwlwifi/lib/firmware/iwlwifi

And if this does not help, move the iwlwifi folder under /lib/firmaware

It is possible that something with this new kernel is behind the behavior and so...it might be new Puppy or kernel behavior problem.

bigpup.
I do create all my builds by using woof. I dont remaster or unsqhuash existing main sfs files and replace stuff.

These builds are pure woof builds. Using latest woof version, and I have added all included stuff to the distro_specs file to be imported in to the build by woof processing.

So....this is woof build.

The reason I am doing this...is to add those things which Barry had left out...or better....he did quick building so that Precise Puppy boots the X and most stuff quickly tested seems to work.

Through forum posts I have added already a lot missing stuff.

Been primarily splitting time today between Precise 5.3.3.1 and the latest and greatest Slacko release......other than the expected early little problems it's looking really solid........Particularly since this is an early test build.
Excellent work as usual. :)

Pesamu,

Thanks for all your effort. But it didn't work. Dmesg still only informs is see the USB device, but does not load any drivers for it. Also lsmod does not indicate any drivers loaded. When I try a modules with different chip (Realtek) I see both lsmod as dmesg indicate what it is doing.
It seems the USB ID is not "linked" to the Broadcom driver.
And I have no idea if that can be forced manually.

Regards,

Volhout

P.S. is this driver PET very specific for UPUP 5.3.3, or can it be used with other kernels also ?

Volhout. Could you post lspci -nn findings concerning your wireless chip. I need to check what it tells.

The support for your broadcom usb chip is new.

The pet I provided has just the supposed needed firmwares. You can try them in other Puppy which has that brcm* drivers included. There wasnt any kernel driver module included.

What we test now is brand new testing...

Hi Pesamu,

lspci missed some libs in 5.3.3. I used a different puppy (Slacko) to try the lspci, and it did not list the module. But "lsusb" did.....

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
These id's are the same as in the listing I did post earlier from dmesg.
I'll see if I can find a puppy that already has these (but older) drivers. Maybe Slacko has (3.2.7 kernel).

Volhout. I checked the information once more. I am not sure that the kernel module brcmfmac.ko is still ready to support usb modules. There isnt in .config specs option for usb modules, there is sdio module option only.

Even though there is already firmware available...it can be that the brcmfmac.ko supports those 2 usb chips in the future. I cant do much more atm.

Jim1911. I checked the firmware.dep file and it seems I have missed the dependency for iwlwifi.ko module.

Here is the updated firmware.dep file. Just install the pet. And maybe reboot....or just try once again with rmmod iwlwifi and modprobe iwlwifi.

Also...brcmsmac.ko support has been nowadays linked to broadcom spesific amba. If I would enable it...the broadcom ssb dependent modules will be dropped out. Oh well....there isnt justice in this world. I am thinking to revert back to 3.2.14 kernel. Mavrothal would be happy with this decision....lol..

Just loaded 5.3.3.1 -- sound works, wifi works -- both seem to require puppies with 3.x kernels (so far tested) on this new machine.

key assignments (screen brightness keys, volume and mute keys, etc, still don't work.

In Racy 5.3 (by comparison), brightness keys do work (though reversed). Volume does not.

In case of any use, below is a snip from /tmp/xerrs.log:

Pemasu, I've tried your combo xkeybindings, vattery etc .pets in this machine with various other puppies (looks like it's incorporated in this one) and the machine is unresponsive to it. Continues to ignore the bindings.

battery display is okay in UP5331 as is proc and speaker in the bar, so those portions do seem to work.

Do you have a default set of key bindings in this puppy, or are they all to be added by the user?

I have compiled now the latest xbindkeys in upup precise. Lets see if it helps you.

Yeah...there is the old default set. You see them by running from the menu xbindkeys-config. I havent given much thought yet for finetuning.

You can remove existing keybindings and create them again with your wanted commands with xbindkeys-config
