Pup Save question

#2563 Post by RubenRybnik »

Is there a way to set Saluki to use the entire partition for saving instead of the save file? I know I can do this on Slacko, but haven't found out how to do it on Saluki.

Also, is there a way to set up a Login screen on boot up, much like Ubuntus? I'd basically like a login on boot up that lets me choose between XFCE and JWM window managers for when I'm on older systems.

Love the project, thanks!

If you choose Legacy in Pupsaveconfig, I think it will let you save to partition, but you may or may not have issues with sfs loading. That mode has not been tested recently so I have no idea.

Please know that jwm is not supported and a good number of things will not work correctly if you do not run the xfce session manager.

You can install Icewm, but it will not speed things up. It's session management that's slow - not the window manager.

Thanks for the info ... so how does xfce work on older systems( lets say 512mb ram, and a 1ghz+ type processor with one core )?

What is the Saluki release process like? Is it scheduled to be updated to the latest puppy release anytime soon?

It takes a fair amount of time to start up, but once running it should be quite usable. Applications take a couple extra seconds to start. - but still a lot faster than windows/ubuntu etc.

Saluki 1 will be released in a week or two - woof is synced with racy 5.2.

Then development of Saluki 2 will begin at some point with a racy 5.3 woof. The only major new feature in 5.3 is the extra localization. But xfce 4.10 is about to be released and that has some exciting new features.

First boot with savefile went not as smooth as expected .

Shutdown-config is new to me and was overloaded at first time .

Don't know if i had made some unpropper entries : ext4 256MB , no encrypt. : only the /root directory was cp into the save file , with lots of .hidden files on ~/toplevel but only ~/Desktop and ~/.cache directory .
/etc /initrd /lib /usr /var are only empty 2KB files, not folders .

The file mounts from RAM mode , so no fs corruption .

This got me to the dreaded kernel panic : not syncing :D

Looking closer it turned out that had been two short files from the camera applet causing the save file to be filled up

installed 019 frugal pfix=ram to ext4 hdd dual p6100 hp laptop. both laptop and ext monitor displayed.
using first run xorgwizard to probe and change display it would not display correctly the HDMI connected ext monitor.
used the dual monitor program from control panel to set
correct display but it was not persistent on reboot.

reboot without HDMI monitor connected laptop has correct display but plugging in monitor
did not display correctly. again using dual monitor program to set correct
display it is not persistent upon reboot.

all prior versions did not have this problem.

everything else seems to work during this short time. will continue to test. thanks

I'm running 019 a few days now and I really like it. :)

I'm pretty new to this topic, so sorry if those below were raised already
(I have ThreadGet'ted the whole thread and did use 'find' - no satisfying results).

Three questions/issues:

1. Xlock
It took me a while to figure out how to reset a password, so far I'm using this:

Code: Select all

/usr/local/apps/Xlock/AppRun -password
or by deleting /root/.xlockrc
But, is there any "normal" way to do it?

2. xfce/Thunar
Right click on a file -> Open With Other Application -> Recommended Applications
I can add an application to this list...but the question is: how to remove one?
Right clicking on any of items invokes "- Remove Launcher" little window, but it's inactive.
And I couldn't find a file with that list, to edit it manually...

3. And last but...yeah - least
Exit To prompt -> xwin -> Exit To Prompt again, and there's such line:
Type "xwin [fvm95|jwm]" to restart X ([ ] mean optional).
Both don't work for me (black screen), only xwin startxfce4
So the question is: is there JWM already in Saluki or the line is just a relic of something..?

Keep up the great work, jemimah & Greetings!

I don't know why sometimes it remembers your monitors and sometimes not. Can't figure it out for the life of me.

I just put a script in /root/Startup to fix it.

Code: Select all

xrandr --output eDP1 --left-of VGA1
Look in Grandr to find out the names of your monitors.

1. No there's not a good way to do it. I guess I should put a reset password button in the xlock settings.

2. The file you're looking for is /root/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

3. It's lying. There is no jwm or fvwm installed.

JAVA in Saluki

#2575 Post by gcmartin »

Hi Jemimah. In testing all seems well. Shown below.

In beginning to set up the base system, I was NOT able to find JRE/JDK in the Saluki Repo. Before adding it, would you glance at this thread and its OP link.

Knowledge might help a good recommendation to this set of users should you add a JAVA subsystem for our use.

Hope this helps

Little over 1 year ago, @JamesBond made subsytem for supporting the booting of other machines over the LAN. His facility is a NETBOOTing facility which requires a pre-req "DNSMASQ".

IF there is still time, could the SALUKI repo have this facility so that Saluki can provide similar LAN offering.

Here to help

There is jre-1.6u30-i586.sfs, this works with LibreOffice3.4.5.sfs, for java info see TheAsterisk! java thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 322#518322

hi jemimah,

as screen was recently mentioned i've compiled screen an tmux in/for saluki.

tmux is compiled statically against libevent.

EDIT: Also compiled dvtm, a tiling windowmanager for cli.
