How to set up default language encoding on ce1250?

i want to set up default puppy linux encoding with code ce1250 (central european 1250, or windows 1250), to have all charachters in subtitles (.sub and .srt), leafpad, abiword, opera, thunderbird, geany, etc.

language country setting in start doesn't helps, cause when i choose a language from list (croatian, bosnian, or serbian - it's kinda same language, ex-yugoslavian) it sets it either on ce1252, or english code, or utf-8 (witch doesn't work), and charachters are distorted.

i have doal booting, and in windows everything is fine with language coding, automatically.

how to do this? with some programming... or something like that

in our language we have two variants, latin and cirilic. 99 per cent of usage is in latin, subtitles for example, what is the most important in this case.

i get there (what you quoted) explanation for cirilic, and it works with ce1251 and utf-8, for subtitles in gnome mplayer. in some other applications it depends, and i didn't want to experiment further, cause small number of subtitles are on cirilic.

so, i choose croatian language variant of ex-yu (almost every subtitle is in that variant, latin), and, for that, code is ce1250 and utf-8, as i realised. and that doesn't work, even with language pack.

but, this is solution, i sopose:

1.Go to

3. Make this script.
WARNNG! i'm a newbie in this but the script seems to work.

cp /root/.fonts/fonts.dir /root/.fonts/fonts.dir.bak
cp /root/.fonts/fonts.scale /root/.fonts/fonts.scale.bak
mkfontscale /root/.fonts
mkfontdir /root/.fonts

4. copy your .ttf font files to /root/.fonts {you can maybe find some in c:\windows\fonts or elswhere}

run the script and the fonts will work in your applications.

i hope some experienced user can explaine this on the level of begginer. i suppose that would be the answer, the solution of this.

listen, i read everything you gave here, and i'm very helpfull for your effort, but i don't understand almost anything of that. sorry, but we stupid people also must live on this planet. i even don't know for sure what is exactly the problem in this case, to point all my solving in that direction.

and, interesting, it says on couple of applications - "cp1250 is not supported"!

i can change manually every of those 3 characters with appropriate one (with replace option), but i lose with that operation my precios 10 seconds in life.

or, i try to change .srt file in leafpad from deafault coding windows-1252 into the cp1250 (to make possible to see 3 distorted characters), and it says "converting in cp1250 is not supported".

what does it mean?

The encodings are part of the main /lib/libc.so.6

The util to change encodings of text files compiles with the gnu-libc source and is named 'iconv' .

tells me that gnu does not seem to support "CE" encodings on my side .

i don't know what you said, but other linux distros suport (for subtiltes ie). puppy also support, but only 2 of 5 nonenglish characters, as i realise till now.
