Downloaded the DotPup: rt2x00 drivers for Ralink wireless devices
for Puppy Linux v2 with kernel 2.6.16.7

from www.dotpups.de/dotpups/Wifi/wireless-drivers/

Im running 2.02 w kernel 2.6.16.7 and when i go to install the nedded modules i get the above error message when running modprobe on the following modules:

modprobe 80211 (located at /lib/modules/2.6/net/wireless/rt2x00/ieee80211/80211.ko)

modprobe rate_control (located at /lib/modules/2.6/net/wireless/rt2x00/ieee80211/rate_controle.ko)

modprobe rt2500usb (located at /lib/modules/2.6/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2500usb.ko)

not sure why this is happening. Could someone point me in the right direction?

im a complete noob to modprobe as well as puppy and dotpups.

***Edit: Oops, perhaps this thread belongs in the Beginners forum, sorry for that.

Puppy 2.02 has changed the Kernel, though it has the same version-number, it is incompatible.

There are 2 solutions:

1.) Wait, until someone compiles it for this Kernel
2.) Use Puppy 2.01.

If you don't need Ntfs write-support, Puppy 2.01 might be the better choice, as the next Puppy 2.03 will change the kernel again, so there is no guarantee someone will compile a new module for 2.02.

yes, 2.01r2 uses the "old" kernel, for which these modules were compiled Smile

installing the before mentioned dotpup on 2.01r2

according to the dotpup installation read me:

modprobe 80211
modprobe rate_control
modprobe rt73usb

...gave me an Invalid module format when trying to insert firmware_class (/lib/modules/2.6/lib/firmware_class.ko)

I'm thinking it may be because i just downgraded (changed CDs) to 2.01 using the same sfs file from 2.02? must i create a new sfs altogether?

***EDIT: made a mistake because originally was using the wrong usb module (rt2500usb, instead of rt73usb, which requires firmware_class)
