Jemimah, you make the decisions. It's your distro. I am not trying to persuade you to do anything. I'm just testing and providing feedback, hoping it will be useful.

Saluki is looking really good. I also like the idea of a clean desktop and let individuals choose their own icons. Similar with browsers, everybody has their own favourite. Midori is a good compromise regarding size and functionality.

Cheers

Saluki

I'm running from the live dvd with a save file.
CPU frequency scaling utility only offers one option (generic).

I made a vlc-1.1.13-Saluki-i686.sfs file,after installing you need to
restart X to get a menu entry, the download link is:

Jemimah

On here with default medori-browser but... I really wanted a 'Firewall' setup before surfing... I see no option to set one up in 009 ??? Do you feel it isn't necessary or is it built into 009 automatically or are we missing a setup file or is it that I just don't know where to look for it (like on 008 - the SAVE file  )?

For the firewall, Control Panel and look under "Network".

Anyway, fresh frugal install of 009 on my main Atlon XP box. Sound and internet working and correct.,... boots to 1280x1024 ...necessary to use xorgwizard to achieve desired 1440x900 with nouveau driver.Basically working well.

Still don't like Midori but since it only takes about 30 seconds to install SeaMonkey......

009 update

#809 Post by Marv »

Had a brief bash at 009. Updating 008 save file breaks Frisbee for the first time. Pretty much as happened to peebee with an update to 008 as I recall. Will not hold connection through a reboot after the update and will not accept key if profile is stripped and I attempt to create a new profile. /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors is present. Frisbee works correctly on a fresh frugal install.

flSynclient remains broken. Tapping was enabled and no vertical scrolling on first boot. Using flSynclient I was able to disable tapping but could not enable vertical scrolling on my Alps touchpad (Dell D610). Calibrate still crashes X. Deleting /root/.flSynclient got me back a pretty usable touchpad with vertical scrolling and no tapping. Default accel and speed not bad. The parameters in /root/.flSynclient look perfectly correct for scrolling to me. Editing Xorg.conf with the default laptop touchpad settings pretty much bricked it. Both touchpad and stick locked up tight. I may play with it further but for now I'm back to 008.

Theme, fonts, all panel settings, previously installed pets, all other configurations and settings came through the update correctly. CUPS, Opera also fine. Adrive layering must be ok now.

Next go at updating, I'll probably just eliminate flSynclient completely and try and puzzle out what breaks Frisbee.

Alas,
Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

but I think most people want "straight to desktop" to be the default.

smokey01
I agree straight to the desktop is best.
Yes, of course, for regular users.
Problem is for incomers. Could be solved by adding some text to the opening panel, with better explanation of what to do.

009: Good grief, angel does it again! We have correct resolution detection at start-up. Well done and thanks a million euros...

Just need to get coherent(!) instruction on how to install the correct FlashPlayer(s) for Midori & Opera with iPlayer - please.

Installed cairo-dock and got:

cairo-dock
cairo-dock: error while loading shared libraries: libgtkglext-x11-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Fresh frugal install of 009 with save file.

EDIT:
Got it working by examining dependencies then installing them. Not as intuitive as it could be but it worked nevertheless.

Upgraded to 009 with previous save file
Midori complains : TLS/SSL support not available; install glib-networking
GTk themes now are without red:)
Installed cairo-dock just to play a bit
maybe it's possible to apply global-menu somehow?
l
Still can not save setings in Flsynclient

009 update update

#813 Post by Marv »

Re-updated some 008 save files. This time with and without adrive hidden. Same behavior of Frisbee as before. Failed to connect using pre-existing profile, then would not accept the key. Disabled Frisbee and connected smoothly with the Dougal network wizard. Same key same everything. Rebooted and it remembers the connection. THEN, took the network down, re-enabled Frisbee, It accepted the key, connected, and is persistent through reboots with or without adrive present. ??

Puzzle not truly solved but no longer much of an irk. If Frisbee fails after an update (ONLY time it ever has) disable it, use Dougal and seems good to go then , either with or without Frisbee. Makes me happy because there is a fair amount of time wrapped up in a nicely configured save file and in the long run Frisbee seems more universal.

Never had much love for flSynclient. I'll try editing the Xorg.conf more patiently and probably continue to live with that.

Hi smokey01, it works for me, you need to install gtkglext-1.2.0-i486.pet first.http://smokey01.com/jemimah/saluki/pets ... 0-i486.pet

adrv

#816 Post by mavrothal »

Should the Xfce* folders be at the root of the adrv sfs and thus the root of the filesystem?
It makes a "strange" root directory.

Also, any thoughts on (mounted) drives showing on the Desktop?

I like a clean desktop - but I'm blowed if I can work out how to get anything back onto the desktop!! :?:

Can somebody post a quick "howto"?

I think that something will have to be provided for newbies.....otherwise they will sit looking at a blank desktop for ever...

I just looked, they are xfce themes directories, they should be in /usr/share/themes.

it needs to be made executable, here is the lastest I've made it will replace the existing one, just extract it and place it in /usr/sbin

to add icons to the desktop in the dropdown menu just left click and hold on the menu item that you want and drag it to the desktop.
