CP

try using this

http://hidemyass.com/

If it works, there's something wrong with your ISP's tags, and you're getting blocked by a spam blocker or IP blocklist

applies to anyone having problems logging in anywhere, as all your packet calls are tagged with your ISP's return IP address

Using that proxy, simply masks it, and encrypts your true return path

speedtest [won't work via proxy, as flash is blocked]

http://www.speedtest.net/

Thanks Aitch, I tried hidemyass and it works! So does Tor (I installed torbrowser in Slacko) although I find Tor very slow to load.

Seems I am being blocked by something

You should file complaint of failure to provide contracted services, and explain the evidence, so they can replicate it....that should get them looking into it, especially if you tell them you are looking to determine your contract and find better service elsewhere,....if they can't or won't accept responsibility with resolving for you, you have the choice of seeking financial recompense, [partial fee refund] until the problem is fixed, or seeking a different ISP
Many now provide the type of service offered, more reliably

Thanks for the advice; I might just do that Smile TalkTalk aren't the easiest company to deal with though, you keep being passed around between different departments in my experience.

Who's your ISP, out of interest?

It might be worth trying here:
http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/

I've used it to sort out connection problems, and they were very helpful.

perhaps typing
Code:
traceroute www.distrowatch.com
in a console, might give a clue?

I get a lot of 150odd ms hops on a 30-step route of hops to get there....but I can connect, my ISP is BT, btw
