Booting full install and receiving strange error as follows

Making file system usable - Failed

Boots to desktop just fine - everything seems to work

First time I have ever seen this message.

Any ideas?

Subject description: nouveau_unload

micko,

Tried following experiment:

1. Alpha 5 (pfix=ram) boots with "vesa" (according to xorg.conf) - no menus.
2. Download and install nouveau unload pet.
3. Run xorgwizard - probe, test. Wizard chooses nouveau returns to prompt.
4. Type "nouveau_unload."
5. Reboot starts and prompts for save file.
6. Make save file.
7. Alpha 5 reboots with "vesa" and lovely menus!

Edit.
Followed a hunch and rebooted without save file. Although xorg.conf says "vesa" driver, report-video says "nouveau." So "nouveau" is definitely the culprit.

PostPosted: Sat 28 Jan 2012, 13:50    Post subject: 3.1.10 Kernel?

Hi 01micko & All,

01micko wrote:
That's ok, I think 3.1.10 will be a good kernel.

Sorry, I'm having a senior moment/week. Which test build used the 3.1.10 kernel? Or did you mean a kernel from the 3.1.1x series? And how did the feedback regarding the 3.1.10 kernel compare to that of the 3.1.14 kernel, as to which I do not recall anyone reporting a problem.
But as I mentioned, I'm having a senior day, part of which involves a reluctance to re-read the 19 pages preceding this post.

Last thought: Perhaps before making an ultimate decision on which kernel to use, you might PM pemasu, jemimah, playdaz and wuxiandianzi as to what feed-backs they've had regarding the 3.1.x kernels. I know wuxiandianzi's 3.1.8 did not recognize my wireless adapter. Puppy might be best served if all the devs used the same 3.1.x kernel, as several important modules --such as wireless and graphic drivers-- are kernel specific and having to compile and maintain different drivers for different puplets is time-consuming and wasteful.

mikesLr

p.s. iguleder --looking forward to your 64-bit, slackware-compatible build.

Yes, I agree drblock2. nouveau is the culprit. I have'nt see any slacko running yet... no menus at all.

Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 (my problem?)

@escucha

I hear you Very Happy .

Could you repeat my experiment with micko's unload nouveau script?

Yup, me too. After about two hours, my aged friend decided to take a nap.

james C is onto it Wink

However, the k3.1.10 which was released with A3 was buggy on some older systems due to the BFS patch.

I have already explained why I am reverting to k3.1.x series.

The k3.1.10 I have built now (not yet released) is identical in configuration and patches to k3.1.9 of A2 which was very successful and many who have tested later alphas decided to reverted to that because they thought it was the best. It will identify it's self differently to the previous k3.1.10, that is, "uname" will give different output.

Bugfixes have been introduced to combat non wireless connectivity and I am confident that this kernel will be the best yet. I have also implemented work-arounds for nouveau video driver which is problematic on old nvidia gforce cards. Vesa and nv are fine and I do intend to compile the older releases of the nvidia driver for these users.

HTH

For those wanting to watch a video or movie or TV without the screen going blank every 10-minutes...

NoBlankScreen-1.0.pet

from this thread:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=45825

works just dandy in Slacko.

>>>---Indian------>

PS: I would say a 'must' for the PPM!

Doesn't turning off the screen saver do the same?
