Slacko-5.3.1.5
. . . well kinda . . .

Guys . . .
I updated/upgraded from 5.3.1
and there was some 'interference' with a previous new kernel
that seemed to be attempting to blend with 5.3.1

So this is a 'dirty install'
so bear that in mind
First of all no internet (connection)
que? - my ethernet card was not recognised even after a reboot
So I used frisbee as the other connection wizards did not work
(How it downloaded frisbee without a connection is a little weird)
Frisbee worked - now connected.

Now the reason I did an upgrade is because
I wanted to see if Openshot 1.4 with Blender could be made to work
(I worked out . . . actually remembered) you must set the full path of Blender in Openshot preferences. I could not get this rendering in 5.3.1
but I have in 5.3.1.5
. . . sort of . . .
I think what I am doing is memory and CPU intensive
Seamonkey wants memory, Openshot and Blender and even Puppy wants his bit.
So I am getting loads of running threads in the CPU thingee next to the timer [technical term] and eventually have to reboot
Just restarting x does not clear all the white lines.

I have 2 gig of memory and I am pushing Puppy to the limits of the comfort zone.
Puppy is limping
but he is still fit to chase squirrels and create 3D titles
Brave Pup. :)

Using the "Simple Network Setup" (SNS) I had a lot of Internet connection trouble with my Linksys USB network adapter. But it works great with the new Slacko. But did work with frisbee.

But the problem I have now is, one computer reads as wlan0 the other is wlan1, so it wants to auto connect to the previous one, is there a way to set up multiple profiles for SNS, one for wlan0 one for wlan1?

5.3.1.5
All good here - both a pristine and a 5.3.1.4 update install on my HP550 found my B43 with no probs using Frisbee. Also pristine, manual, frugal install to my desktop pc went without hitch and found my wired internet connection without me having to do anything.
Great job mick

[edit] also works on my pretty ancient IBM Thinkpad that only has 160MB of memory but does have a swap partition. Only little quirk was that it booted to the desktop using vesa and then I had to make a small edit to xorg.conf to change the driver from vesa to neomagic. The pcmcia wifi card is also b43 based and worked fine.

Good news, 01micko - slackware64 support is fully implemented in my build system.

I'm currently running it on a Fatdog machine (so I can bootstrap the whole thing - need to build a dirty 64-bit kernel somewhere, boot the result 64-bit distro and build a good kernel package).

At the moment it downloads all the x86_64 packages and it looks quite good. The kernel (3.0.18, the next longterm version) is compiling in the background, with Unionfs, since Aufs3 requires more patches and I like things simple.

Once the two are done, I'll build a barebones, slackware64-based distro I can use with Builder to build 64-bit versions of the applications in my repo. Then, I'll join this barebones base and the packages built inside it to form the first Slacko64 8)

I'll share more details once it's bootable

EDIT: forgot to mention - here's the list of the 32-bit packages downloaded by the build system. I'll make a new build script for Busybox and replace the rest with Slackware packages. :)

Booting full install and receiving strange error as follows

Making file system usable - Failed

Boots to desktop just fine - everything seems to work

First time I have ever seen this message.

Any ideas?

micko,

Tried following experiment:

1. Alpha 5 (pfix=ram) boots with "vesa" (according to xorg.conf) - no menus.
2. Download and install nouveau unload pet.
3. Run xorgwizard - probe, test. Wizard chooses nouveau returns to prompt.
4. Type "nouveau_unload."
5. Reboot starts and prompts for save file.
6. Make save file.
7. Alpha 5 reboots with "vesa" and lovely menus!

Edit.
Followed a hunch and rebooted without save file. Although xorg.conf says "vesa" driver, report-video says "nouveau." So "nouveau" is definitely the culprit.

3.1.10 Kernel?

#288 Post by mikeslr »

Hi 01micko & All,

01micko wrote:
That's ok, I think 3.1.10 will be a good kernel.

Sorry, I'm having a senior moment/week. Which test build used the 3.1.10 kernel? Or did you mean a kernel from the 3.1.1x series? And how did the feedback regarding the 3.1.10 kernel compare to that of the 3.1.14 kernel, as to which I do not recall anyone reporting a problem.
But as I mentioned, I'm having a senior day, part of which involves a reluctance to re-read the 19 pages preceding this post.

Last thought: Perhaps before making an ultimate decision on which kernel to use, you might PM pemasu, jemimah, playdaz and wuxiandianzi as to what feed-backs they've had regarding the 3.1.x kernels. I know wuxiandianzi's 3.1.8 did not recognize my wireless adapter. Puppy might be best served if all the devs used the same 3.1.x kernel, as several important modules --such as wireless and graphic drivers-- are kernel specific and having to compile and maintain different drivers for different puplets is time-consuming and wasteful.

mikesLr

p.s. iguleder --looking forward to your 64-bit, slackware-compatible build.

Yes, I agree drblock2. nouveau is the culprit. I have'nt see any slacko running yet... no menus at all.

Could you repeat my experiment with micko's unload nouveau script?

Yup, me too. After about two hours, my aged friend decided to take a nap.

james C is onto it

However, the k3.1.10 which was released with A3 was buggy on some older systems due to the BFS patch.

I have already explained why I am reverting to k3.1.x series.

The k3.1.10 I have built now (not yet released) is identical in configuration and patches to k3.1.9 of A2 which was very successful and many who have tested later alphas decided to reverted to that because they thought it was the best. It will identify it's self differently to the previous k3.1.10, that is, "uname" will give different output.

Bugfixes have been introduced to combat non wireless connectivity and I am confident that this kernel will be the best yet. I have also implemented work-arounds for nouveau video driver which is problematic on old nvidia gforce cards. Vesa and nv are fine and I do intend to compile the older releases of the nvidia driver for these users.

For those wanting to watch a video or movie or TV without the screen going blank every 10-minutes...

NoBlankScreen-1.0.pet

untested deltas at discretion. no slacko deltas reported to fail.

Code: Select all

wget -4c --http-user=puppy --http-password=linux http://www.smokey01.com/aarf/xdelta/slacko-5.3.1.5-SCSI.iso___slacko-5.3.2.1-SCSI.iso.delta
(22 M)

The md5sum of slacko-5.3.1.5-SCSI.iso is 0479721818ff0127e8d597b60add1ae3

The md5sum a of slacko-5.3.2.1-SCSI.iso is: 73e4986538ef93c763ffc131617a1280
