"desktop template" icon-set switcher bug |
|
A search doesn't find any prior report, though it's a dramatic bug. Present in both 528 and 531.
How encountered: after deleting some desktop icons, decided to try out the icon-set switcher (Menu/Dektop/Desktop Settings/ third item). Outcome: nothing. X Windows restarts, and the arrangement I've made reappears, no matter which option is selected.
Then I tried the drive icon component - switching to Sparse worked, but switching from Sparse to Traditional caused the Sparse icons to reappear, and the Traditional set to be added to them after a brief pause - with its leftmost icon superimposed on top of another icon.
And finally, switching to No Drive Icons kicked the Bare Desktop option into life - and I got a Bare Desktop, after which Custom worked and brought back my own arrangement. But I still can't get the Traditional array to come back.
Do others find the feature to work?

Using Lucid Puppy 5.2.8
Desktop Icon Switcher
Working OK for me.
Desksetup Templates for Desk Icons
Working OK for me.
One possible cause of your problems. If you have customized the desktop.
Before making changes.
Click on save your custom arrangement.
How are you running Puppy?
Live CD, frugal or full install?
If method that uses save file, have you made one?
Not having a save file, for a live CD or frugal install, can cause problems you describe.

I see the bug in three different installs, and two Puppy versions.
I'm running from live USB, with persistence file, and have saved my custom icon array.
Looking more closely, I can narrow it down a bit. The defects I see all happen when the Lean option for drive icons is in effect. In that state, the desktop array switch is non-functional - but it works if there are no drive icons, or "traditional" drive icons (an icon for each partition).
Also switching from Lean to Traditional drive icons results in a double set.
