HP Jornada 820 Puppy?

#1 Post by BruceB »

Has anyone thought of putting Puppy onto an HP Jornada 820?

The machine is old (1998 vintage) and therefore slow, and only 16 - 32 MB RAM (does that make Puppy out of the question?), but otherwise might make a near-ideal E-mail-on-the-road machine. 2 1/2 pounds, nice keyboard with touchpad, 640x480 color display, USB, PCMCIA slot, CompactFlash slot, modem, even an IrDA port. And you can find them on Ebay for $100 - $250.

There is a SourceForge project (http://jornada820.sourceforge.net) and a detailed information page (http://fare.tunes.org/computing/jornada820.html) for Linux on the 820, but that project seems to have stalled -- no updates since last year. Status is at http://jornada820.sourceforge.net/status.html .

I'm not expert enough to consider starting a Puppy/Jornada project, but there might be some contribution I could make if others were interested. If nothing else, I could loan someone my Jornada, which is otherwise sitting idle on a shelf!

Hello there... well, I have installed puppy in a presario 1244, with 32 or less ram (the video grabs some) and you will have trouble booting 4 the first time... I think that 32 is the minimum.... but if you can, as I did, set up a swap partition on the hard drive (does have a hard drive?) and puppy will recognice it. If it does not have a hard drive... but have a removable media (as you say, compact flash) ir may be possible to create a swap file on it... but probabli you will have to do it in another machine (one able to boot) save de swapfile and/or the session on de CF media and then go and try in that 820... Well, try if you have the chance of doit withouth spending money first

I was rather fond of my old Jornada, but I think it's a lost cause, or at least not worth the trouble -- no hard drive, not enough memory, etc.

I'd like to see a similar form factor (<3 pounds sub-laptop, nice keyboard, large enough (640x480 or bigger) color display) that could run Puppy and be inexpensive. Shouldn't need a hard drive, etc. I'm not too hopeful of such coming along soon.
