Gnome 2.14 - mini - testing

I M P O R T A N T

This will overwrite important systemfiles in Puppy (Glib / Gtk2).
As a result, some applications might behave strange or simply crash unexpected.

Graveman crashes immedeatly.

A more reliable version ( Gtk 2.8 ) might follow in the next days.
However you can test without risk by starting Puppy with "pfix=ram".

Puppy 1: NOT tested yet, but might work.

This is a *very* basic version of Gnome:
gnome-panel (start-menu/taskbar)
nautilus (filemanager)

So it is not intended as a replacement of Puppys desktops, but as an enhancement for the interested.
The headers are included, so you can compile own applications.
Only english is included.

It has NOT:
backgroundsetter, controlcenter, gedit, CD-burning, gstreamer, HAL.......

JWM can not use the Gnome-taskbar (but the panel), so you might install Icewm, but that is not required:

A very nice feature: the Gnome-taskbar can "group" files, so if you have 4 xterm open, you see just 1 entry, that will open a popup-menu to access all 4. Love that

After installation, run "Gnome" from the Dotpups-menu or in a consolewindow.

Some notes:
- if the mixer-applet crashes, click on "delete" when you are asked for.
- The Picture-preview in Nautilus must be activated in edit -> preferences -> preview -> show thumbnails - always.
- RIGHT-click the panel to add applets like the fish.
- in the menu, you can access several of Puppys programs, but not all.
If you run Gnome in JWM, you still have the JWM-startmenu.
In Icewm, you can edit /root/.icewm/preferences somewhere, to show the menu with a click on the desktop.

Nautilus runs without using the Gnome-iconsystem for the desktop, so that you still have the Rox-icons.
If you want the Gnome-iconsystem instead, edit
/usr/local/Gnome-2.14.2/Gnome, remove the "--no-desktop".


Experienced users can run
gconf-editor
to set up some details.

A right-click on the menu offers to edit it, but you can only activate/deactivate entries (= xdg .desktop files).

I prefer Gnome. It is simpler, faster and more elegant (IMO)
Getting it working with Puppy was considered almost (but not quite) impossible.

Icewm is unbeaten in the combination of size and functionality (beside fluxbox).
Gnome itself has metacity, but you need lots of other libs to be able to change a theme using the gnome-control-center.
So I decided to leave them away in the Gnome-dotpup.
Icewm is <600 kb only, my dotpup is just larger because it includes 50 themes and some addon-programs.
The Dotpups-wiki also has some minimalist icewm-dotpups

Sawfish is nice too, but it needs some more things like librep.
Might be worth to make a dotpup.
