Storybook in Dpup?

#1461 Post by edoc »

Can anyone tell of the open source novel writing tool, Storybook, will run under Dpup?

http://www.novelist.ch/joomla/index.ph ... stallation

Or are there dependencies, etc, that make it improbable?

We are using 5X9 here.

Posting from freshly compiled Qupzilla-1.1.0. Qt Webbrowser, uses QtWebkit properties. Not bad. Ssl support, plays Youtube with adobe flashplayer, 5 themes, locales for different languages....etc. Install the qt-essential libs from the below link and attached pet and NLS pet if you want National Language Support (NLS).

Link to Qt-libs post: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 193#593193

Edoc. Storybook seems to be java app. Not sure if there is anything to compile. It is gpl app and source code is available but to compile it. I have no idea about java apps and it is not the first app class I am keen to know more about.
But there is storybook binary for ubuntu in the repo. Download it. Create next /root/opt/folder. It is needed so that the binary file storybook....something will execute itself. After creating those folders. Execute the binary and you are ready to go. Use sfs apps loader icon in the desktop and install version 6 java: jre-1.6.0.30.sfs
then you can make the symlink from /root/opt/storybook/storybook to the /usr/bin and in console you can launch the app by: storybook
Something prevents the launching by clicking that storybook script or by clicking the storybook.desktop file. Something with java I suppose. I know nothing about launching java apps, so maybe somebody else is willing to try it.

Storybook has been published under gpl so it would be probably ok to make pet of it if somebody solves the launching issue.

Neat! I downloaded the Pets and will test later. Thanks!

BTW: Is there a reason t prefer a Pet to a SFS for certain apps?

I would only chase my tail and come up empty ... so I will wait for something better qualified to resolve the java launching issue.

Perhaps a Pet and a SFS version?

About pets and sfs. I will create at least sfs if the app as packages is 10 Mb or bigger. Some devs create sfs if the app as packaged is over 5 Mb. I have kept about 10 Mb the border.
Smaller apps are better as pets, so they dont consume the 6 sfs apps border. I am not as handy as tazoc and I cant create init script which handles many sfs files. I once looked the changes tazoc had made to the init script and I gave up. Too complicated to my small brain(s).

Qt-libs misses the sfs, because I havent done them yet. I am still testing them and when I am sure they work ok, I will create the sfs`s of them also. I was also too tired to create sfs and upload them. Now I have spent my time playing with them and testing my earlier qt pets compiled in Polarpup Qt-4.8.0 time.

Testing now test build of 5.X.10. Several applications has been updated. Laptop-tools has gone face lift through Saluki thread. MtPaint-3.40 compiled in dpup, Firefox-9.0.1-official. CpuTemp changed to the 01mickos Tempicon in tray. Etc...
I will create another build tomorrow with small fixes to the missing icons etc...
I use latest woof2. I did update commits since my previous woof2 download.

I have had delays due to weather condition. Horrible wind and network connection has dropped all the time. Paying 2 bills in netbank took 2 hours, lol.
Now only one bill to pay. Atm we got electricity back after one hour cut. Now net connection seems to work. I havent had any possiblity to upload 5.X.10 version. It seems, I have had time to test it, that one app update does not seem to work. I have to test it again with fresh frugal installation. If it misbehaves, I will build the distro with last good version. Lets see....I hope I have net connection enough so that I can read the emails first.

E-mail, Text, etc. notifications?

#1470 Post by edoc »

Two requests for future consideration, please?

1. Automated E-mail or text or other (Twitter? Facebook acct? Whatever) - IF a person signs-up for it, letting users know about updates to Dpup.

2. The same, but for anything that stops working in Dpup due to non-Puppy causes, e.g. a new Flash version is released and some sites stop responding, a new coding scheme is adopted that blocks ripping, that sort of thing - not 100% comprehensive but just stuff that the key developers learn about - so they are not flooded with "it's broken" messages and so that users do not think it's a problem specific to their computer and are chasing a "ghost".

WDYT?

I really appreciate all that you do and am not seeking to add work - only to add value and user confidence.

Excellent download speed ~1.5MB/s. Good MD5Sum.

Did frugal install to ext4 partition.

Working extremely well. I have BCM43 wifi chip, which was identified and auto reconnects on reboot.

Very nice, excellent work. Thank you.

Tried 2 more pets, pet installation is not completed until manually restarting "x".Dialog box just remains until x is manually restarted.Pets do install and work in the end.
Htop and a game were the two pets.

I did a trial Frugal install - hardware all detected OK on old Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 laptop.

Connect via Frisbee OK, Firefox requested and added Flash and looked OK.

I did not choose to Save the install yet ...

Questions:

1. Could opening Firefox in 5x10 and then not saving that temporary Frugal install have corrupted my login settings for Seamonkey in 5x9 E-mail somehow? I am suddenly getting E-mail password errors when I reboot into dpup 5x9 Seamonkey.

2. Can the version of Seamonkey I used with 5x9 also be used with 5x10?

3. Is it OK to use the 5x9 Savefile or might that create problems?

Thanks!

Same thing happened here with an emelfm2 pet (which I have used many times in prior Dpups). The pet did not install completely and Puppy Package Manager aborted (locked midstream) while trying to remove remnants of the pet. After restarting X, the pet did install but emelfm2 was not added to the Puppy menu.

I'm trying a fourth pet.The first three pets installed and had menu entries ....after I restarted "x" and ran "fixmenus" in the terminal. I'm using pets from my private repository (extra directory on my hdd).
This last attempt, I've been staring at the dialog box for about 10 minutes.... no progress.Guess I'll restart 'X' and see if it installs.....
