Using Online Banking

#1 Post by dominic18 »

I'm newish to puppy after windows xp decided not to boot and one thing I always did on xp was on-line banking.
I used to take comfort in using avast, avg, spy-bot, and comodos but puppy doesn't have anything on those lines.
Is there anything I need to consider using or installing whilst doing banking on line?

For me safest is to run puppy from live CD, turn on the firewall, and make sure you have a network connection, and are using a version which has a browser by default, and not save after using it...all traces gone, when you power off/reboot
I believe this to be safer than windoze ever was

No, I mean puppy burnt to CD, and popped in the CD drive, and booted....and not saving at shutdown - running from usb or harddrive saves your details unless you have set it to clear when closed

What's Minke browser? Do you mean Seamonkey...that's fine!
If you have to run from usb, try typing puppy pfix=ram at the 5 second boot page, though you'll need to setup up keyboard/locale/video, as it's a fresh boot...but it IS safest, IMHO
Ensure firewall is started, and network connected and your set

Ave Maria!
The source of bank meltdown has been found . . .

You are more secure than you have ever been - just using Puppy
Puppy 5.3.1 contains a little GROWL

and if you need paranoid levels of security
we have them

@ Lobster
I'd recommend taking ntfs3g out of the security wikka as telling people to use the latest updated version, when I updated it in PupRescue it took me over a month and I had to modify a ton of stuff to get it working properly
Id also recommend getting rid of chkrootkit or at least warning people that it shows false positives in most Puppies.

@dominic18 There is an Avast pet for puppy, I made one and Barry made one you should find mine on the forum and his on his blog. There is also AVG for linux but its a pain in the ass and pretty huge.....

Being a troglodyte is an extreme security policy but it works . . .

Thanks Dup5520, good advice. :)
After reading this
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 293#506925
concur and removed rootkit link

I need some more info on NTFS - I think you are right.
Bit torrent is quite happy to access potential Windows file systems
- I think it has done so on my system, where I keep a NTFS partition for nostalgia . . .
Some people do need access to NTFS
You can of course edit the wiki too. You will have to register . . . (for security reasons - keeping the bots out) 8)

1. The trouble with using the command:
puppy pfix=ram
With a "live" Puppy optical disk...
And no pupsave...
Is that it involves rather too much hassle for my liking, and not enough easy convenience via personalization by configuration choices and package installations.

2. At first I used a dedicated Puppy [with a pupsave and a backup copy to restore if any problem is suspected] to do nothing but banking.

3. Then I discovered the methods used below that allow me to use a pupsave file on a HDD as though it's a pupsave on a Flash Drive.
Naturally...I still make backups of the pupsave file, and restore it if I so much as suspect a problem.

4. Now what I do is:
(a) Do all the stuff that must be done very safely [like banking or online purchases] in their own session, and don't "Save" during the session, nor at shut-down/reboot.
(b) Nothing of that session is saved. No Super-cookies or whatever.
(c) Just in case...I also use Firefox with the BetterPrivacy extension/add-on, and have it set to delete LSO's at both startup and shut-down.

5. The methods to use:
(a) See this.
And also...
(b) How to prevent the spurious warning as a pupsave installation of Puppy boots, that the previous shut-down was improper.

6. By-the way...
I ALWAYS use "Acerose Password Vault" [APV] to keep safe and secure all my passwords etc.
It's a Windows program, that can be used either installed or not->[portable].
I use it portable and use WINE in Puppy to run it.
I use it, and "Copy & paste" username and password etc, from the APV "Edit" window, into the necessary boxes [e.g. at my banking sign-in page].
Hence, My details ALWAYS work.
Only exception to that was/is when my ISP [Virgin] messes with the password for my webmail account.
I use APV because it is REALLY GOOD at what it is designed to do.
I've used it for YEARS, and still delighted with it.
Lots of stuff held in the vault.
Only need to remember my username and password to gain access.

I agree with Aitch's way to bank safely. I run a dpup-485 live CD, and in addition to Aitch's recipe, I run my Firefox in private mode with no recording of passwords or history, and in general set the Firefox preferences to max safety and privacy. I also get a new IP every time I log in, so in general I feel relatively safe when using a PC (any PC when using a live puppy CD/DVD) for banking.
