Dropbox Subject description: working on lucid puppy |
|
For some reason this Dropbox has started not working properly on puppy linux. After every boot dropbox is now asking for for your setup details..very annoying..! however, Brown_mouse has found a portable dropbox that seems ok
http://portablelinuxapps.org/download/Dropbox%201.1.43
This is compiled on puppy from the source here https://www.dropbox.com/downloading
any problems, let me know
You will need to install python for it to work... here's python for lucid puppy http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-lucid/Python-2.6-Lucid.pet
For slacko you can use the dropbox in the slackware repos. To enable them, open the Puppy package manager and press the configure button.
Then tick the 3 slackware repos and the slako, and press OK (don't press update!! )
then exit the PPM entirely. When you restart the PPM the slackware repos will be available.
type dropbox into the find bar and install it (Note: you only need dropbox.. there's no dependencies)

I tried this on Quirky 1.2.0 NOP XFCE Desktop that I added quite a lot of other apps in, so whether a vanilla version will run it I do not know.
It runs fine, though I did have to add a couple of things, a thunar dropbox plugin and jemimah's xdg-open script to open files.
All seems good everything works, Thunar now has Dropbox in the right click context menu.
Jemimah's xdg-open script xdgopen-1.pet
Edit added thunar_dropbox-0.2.0_i686.pet, this plugin works with dropbox installed on Saluki.

Hey 666philb,
This is great, I've been playing around with it works really well
the next best thing to running a vpn for file sharing
with the free 2gig storage it more than enough for my needs.
The context menu in Thunar makes it easier to manage, especially the copy public link.

hi geoffrey
I haven't had a go with your pet as i don't use thunar. It sounds good though, that right click to get a download link , i would find very convenient. Do you know if there's a way to get it to work on rox?
If you ever need more space, there is also 'spideroak' which gives you 2gb
http://sourceforge.net/projects/portable/files/SpiderOak/download
and if you don't mind using wine , there's sugarsync which gives you 5gb
https://www.sugarsync.com/
cheers

I made this .pet as there was a post complaining about the version of the portable one. I used to use the portable but now use the .pet. there's really no difference. Although the pet, may update itself.

Dropbox Subject description: autostart and account data |
|
I'm using LuPu 528, update 2.
Dropbox install worked fine, but it won't autostart after boot, although this option is ticked and the .config/autostart folder contains dropbox.desktop.
If I start Dropbox manually, it starts the set-up assistant asking for my account data which is quite annoying. Having completed the new set-up, everything seems to work fine.
Any idea how I can make Dropbox autostart and remember my account data?

hi jodother
in root there are 2 hidden dropbox folders (press the eye at the top to show hidden folders) in one of them you will find the dropbox executable.
drag and drop this into /root/startup and choose symlink/link relative
it should now auto start

Thanks a lot 666philb
Dropbox now auto starts but it's still weird:
The first screen that shows up asks for the proxy configuration, the second screen asks for my account data. While I'm typing it jumps back to the 1st screen and so forth, until I entered my complete account data. Then there comes another screen asking if I want to use my former configuration. After confimation Dropbox seems to run as it should.

hi jodother
if it's doing this every time it autostarts, then i would try uninstalling it, & deleting the 2 hidden dropbox folders in root, and starting again.
mine only asks the first time to set it up... then autostarts silently... just appearing in the taskbar.
(i'm linking the dropbox executable in /root/.dropbox-dist/dropbox to Startup)

Have tried this with 528, but still need to enter dropbox username and password, skip tour, etc. Any other suggestions?

you could try using the portable one here http://sourceforge.net/projects/portable/files/Dropbox%201.1.43/download
once downloaded, you may need to right click on it, and choose 'permissions' the make searchable/executable. for it to work

Thanks for the suggestion, 666philb. I uninstalled previous version of Dropbox and installed the portable version. When I start Dropbox now, it starts without going through the setup procedure each time. However, I cannot get it to automatically start at startup. Tried sym link and script in Startup folder, but neither cause Dropbox to start.

Huh. My installation (from a Slackware package- version 1.2.49, running Slacko 531) only does that on auto-start if I've shutdown improperly, say from a power failure (or a clumsy friend tripping over a power cable).
EDIT: It never fails, does it? Ever since I posted the above earlier this morning, the same issue has presented repeatedly on my Slacko system.
It's always after you say something or decide to put on a demo that everything goes south, isn't it?
