Here is what I had to do... might provide some insight.

open the ‘Synaptic Package Manager‘ and search for ‘bcm’
uninstall the ‘bcm-kernel-source‘ package
make sure that the ‘firmware-b43-installer‘ and the ‘b43-fwcutter‘ packages are installed

type into terminal:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'

(you may want to copy this) and see if the term ‘blacklist bcm43xx‘ is there
if it is, then type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly).

Today I tested to boot Vector 7.0 Std Gold Live.

That it is live is important for it told me that as a live user
I was not allowed to change the menu.lst despite it being on
ext2 and the files on ext3.

People have told me to get rid of NTFS and to use ext2 or ext3 instead
and all my problems will be gone.

What them really mean but don't realize is that that only works if
your do a full install and does not work if you do a frugal install of a "Live"
version.

The Devs have restricted the "Live" so it does not even help to be root
when you are "Live Session User" You don't have the permissions to save edits.

Now Vector is Slackware or a variant of Slackware.

The cool thing about Slax varieties like Proteus OS or CDLinux OS is
that both of them is more slack than Slackware themselves.
Proteus OS does allow me to save things being root.
Do you remember the Linux is Not Windows slogan?
Well Linux Live is Not always behaving like a Linux Full install either.

I did only test the first of these menu.lst entries

Had my old AntiX P3 box running so I installed Exprimo 5.X.10.2 which is working fine.Long story short,went ahead and installed Vector 7 too..Full install on Ext 3 partition.Pretty quick on this old computer.Using good old legacy Grub too.
Cool logging in as "root" ..... everything has that red WARNING color, wallpaper included.. Laughing

Pretty good triple-boot I guess....Exprimo on sda1, AntiX on sda5 and Vector on sda7.Something to do on a dull rainy night. Smile

I tried Vector 7.0 Gold, and it worked OK for a couple of weeks before the sound died on it for some reason so today I installed Salix 13.37 (LXDE version) instead. So far Salix is working well and seems quite fast and very stable.

Anyone have an opinion about Archbang 2011.11? How user-friendly? How much extra configuration needed? Forum support? I notice there is a "i686" in the ISO name, does this mean only for recent computers?

EDIT: Sheesh, I can't even get it to boot from CD. Fergit it.

Hey did it work for you. What is it like? What can you do?
Is it like being at an old UNIX screen say 1990?

I've just installed Frugalware 1.5, one of two multi-DVD distros I received in the post today from OSDisc.com (the other being CentOS 6.2). So far it seems to be working well; it's a sort of cross between Slackware and Arch, but with the bonus that all the major desktop environments (KDE, Gnome and XFce) are included.

I use Vista on one machine just to run Photshop CS4. XP on another machine for Photoshop 7 and more importantly Painter IX. Win 98 preSE out of nostalgia as its on my first ever computer. PUppy 431 on yet another machine cause I like it and it just works. Of course numerous Puppies on various flash drives and CDs cause most of them just work.

Until recently my usual OS on my favorite computer, a Dell laptop, was Ubuntu Ten Four because of the deeply stocked repositories. However over time the amount and frequency of updates increased and a week ago it borked after an update. Naturally I used Puppy to rescue the few items not yet backed up. Rather than fix or re-install Ubuntu I thought I'd try Lucid 5.2.8.

And I'm happy for it. Beautifully done and so far everything works great!

Just installed Vector 7 Light Beta 1 on an even slower old P3 (733 Mhz/256 Mb ram).Pretty quick and no problems so far.Choice of JWM or ICEWM instead of XFCE4 and lighter default apps.Not Puppy but not bad either.
