01Micko has created, to date, is the greatest 32bit Linux distro I have ever seen. This distro expands on Barry's model with some "dead-center" accuracy toward simplicity and ease of use. It appears to be so comfortable that Windows/Mac users will feel right at home on this RAM based desktop system. I have been using this, totally, in Live media mode and I cannot begin to tell you how insanely fast and robust this packaging is.
With a simple push of a button to add a single package, turns this Puppy into a BIGDOG which can go head-to-head or can race any Linux on the planet.
For starters, it is stable and very, very fast.
On boot, this distro puts up a single Localization screen ("Personalize Settings") for which sound is present via "woof woof". This single screens identifies sound (via woof-woof), my time and timezone, my keyboard, my video settings, and very importantly, my PC's LAN name. I encourage everyone to choose a PC name that is easy to remember and to tell other LAN users your PC's name.
Once this is complete, you can't help but notice that navigation and use of everything is very fast.
Slacko contains multimedia, file utilities, and games. It has built-in tools allowing one to add additional functionality at any time, easily.
This distro does almost everything any Microsoft, Apple, does.
But, it appears that this author recognized that almost is NOT good enough, so 01Micko with one additional creation has added a feature that make this distro the first 32bit Puppy which will provide sharing services to every 2011 LAN device known to man. This single addition propels this 32bit Puppy where it exceeds the performance and versatility on what PCs users have OOTB (out of the box) from Windows and Macs. Devices like, PCs, servers, entertainment centers, printers, Xboxes, PS, WII, Nokia, Android... all, now, can connect to the subsystem which is now part of the Slacko arsenal.
Here's my personal experience to create my first complete SLACKO DVD based system. (Yes, that right, everything I am doing is all from a single CD/DVD to achieve and gloriously exceed Windows and MAC 32bit PCs)
- Booting got me the Correct Video and resolution at system start.
- I set "localization" via FirstRUN or "Personalized Settings"
- I insured Hostname is something I can remember because I will need to tell Windows PC who I am. I chose "SlackPUP".
- I update PPM's REPO via SlickPet on your desktop (middle left on-screen)
- I entered the PPM, clicked Network, and added SAMBA 3.61
- After installation, I exited PPM and click Menu > Network > SAMBA
The tool that pops up is pretty obvious and should serve anyone, young or old, newbie or experienced. In my case, my SlackPUP will be sharing a folder named Public which in on my /mnt/sda1 drive. Once the tool is completed, any Windows/Mac/Linux PCs on my LAN can see what I'm sharing.
This coupling of the SAMBA subsystem in Linux and a Menu tool unseen before now, makes this a compelling addition to any home network that has 2 or more running PC.
Personally, I want to say THANK YOU, 01Micko! You are deserving.
This 32bit system, now, possesses ALL things that we will find in Microsoft or MAC PCs. And, because I am using the PAE version, it exceeds those PCs as this PUP uses all RAM memory that I can throw at it up to 64 gigabytes of RAM. The others don't do this!
This distro is a winner beyond anything to compare.
If you should want one additional system tool, that I have tested, too, consider using your PC also to provide booting services to other PCs on your LAN without the need to burning a CD to get those PCs started. This is called "NETBOOTing" and its document for Puppy users is found here.
Cheers!
