PuppEX 2012 LiveCD - remaster of Slacko 5.3.1

#1 Post by exton »

PuppEX 2012 is a remaster of Puppy Linux Slacko 5.3.1, released on December 12, 2011. Kernel 2.6.37.6 is used when running the system live, but if you install PuppEX to hard disk, you can use "my" own compiled kernel 3.1.5-puppex instead. PuppEX 2012 uses, like the original Puppy Slacko, JVM, Fvwm95 and IceWM as desktop interface. In PuppEX there are, however, elements of LXDE, such as the file manager PCManFM and LXTerminal. These programs are more useful than ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 405 MB, which is due to me including all the necessary additions in order to install programs from source, the extra kernel 3.1.5, Vlc, Gimp and NVIDIA's own graphics driver 285.05.09. Slacko 5.3.1 is only of 126 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems.

Kernel 3.1.5 is the latest available stable kernel (as of 111215).

Switching to kernel 3.1.5-puppex
After a hard disk installation (full, not "frugal"), you can switch to "my" kernel 3.1.5-puppex if you wish. Do it like this:
1. Boot up PuppEX from hard disk
2. Run the command cp /usr/share/puppex/boot/vmlinuz-3.1.5-puppex /boot
3. Change your Grub Legacy configuration. Edit menu.lst (/boot/grub /menu.lst) to look like this:
title PuppEX 2012 (sda6)
root (hd0,5)
# kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6 pmedia=atahd
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-3.1.5-puppex root=/dev/sda6 pmedia=atahd

4. Restart your computer
NOTE: In the above example PuppEX is installed on /dev/sda6. You must of course change (hd0,5) and /dev/sda6 so that it matches your installation.

Have tried this on an Acer Extensa 5230 laptop and a ThinkCentre 8087-35M desktop. Both have Intel video. Both fail to boot at 'loading vmlinuz'. That's all they wrote. ???

gnomic,

I'm sorry to hear that, but in that case the original Puppy (Slacko 5.3.1) also won't boot on your computers. I don't know why. Probably a kernel matter.

Are you sure you have burned a correct iSO-file?

Earlier today I downloaded pemasu's squeeze 5.X.10.2 and burned a cd which booted using the same machine I later used to burn PuppEX. Unclear on what the md5sum should be, didn't see one on the announcement page. Just for some extra fun I'll try a d/l from the Swedish site. My fingers are crossed. Haven't tried 5.3.1, no problem booting 5.3 Slacko.

md5sum: Please look here: http://puppex.exton.net

Or here: http://ftp.svenskalinuxforeningen.se/di ... 111215.md5

The ISO files on Sourceforge.net and The Swedish Linux Society's server are the same. I have (of course) checked them.

Hi there, now have an iso that matches the linux society checksum. Haven't had a chance to burn the cd yet.

The download from Sourceforge on the other hand appears to be bad. That would be the 2nd corrupt d/l from there in 24 hours, so I don't know what's up with that.

Nothing wrong

Hi gnomic,

I've checked it once more because of your suggestion. The ISO file on Sourceforge.net is absolutely flawless.

Maybe your Internet connection...?

It takes about 3 min to download PuppEX ISO from Sourceforge (with "normal" broadband speed).

I did not really read the text due to full install
is not the recommended way to run Puppy.
Sorry, I did a frugal like this

title PuppEX 2012 (sda3)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /PuppEX/vmlinuz psubdir=PuppEX
initrd /PuppEX/initrd.gz

old text

Edit after rebooting and booting into PuppEX
my code worked well for frugal install. I using it now.

No criticism at all but I am a FireFox guy and not into SeaMonkey
nor into Chrome. Have not tested anything else.
Time is 10 PM so I should prepare for going to bed :)

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Full, not "frugal"

#10 Post by exton »

As I write in my first post kernel 3.1.5-puppex can be used in a full installation. Not "frugal".

In a full installation you don't need an initrd file.

Browsers: It is very easy to install Firefox 8.0 in PuppEX, since I have added several repositories. Just search for Firefox in Puppy Package Manager. See a screenshot of the Desktop when Firefox 8.0 is running.

Ooops Sorry, I am a poor reader of text. So a full install need that
extra text for vmlinuz?

Delighted to be able to say that the swedish iso resulted in a live CD that boots. Nice work. Only had a brief session so far but it looks as if it will be useful.

On the other hand, no need to torture me with news of the 'normal' internet. The original faulty download from Sourceforge took around 4 hours here, most of it at a crawl. The internet infrastructure in this country is pretty sad, and there is only one pipe ifrom overseas for the moment which doesn't help. They are starting on fibre to the door, maybe in a few years we'll go faster.

By the way, I don't see a mention of the md5sum on the PuppEX page. In the past you have either had the sum on the page for your creations or a link.

Thanks for looking into the download difficulty.

4 hours?

#15 Post by exton »

gnomic,

Four hours? Which country is that?

You're right. I forgot to mention md5sum on PuppEX's page (but not on Sourceforge.net).

Please read my first post carefully if you plan to use kernel 3.1.5-puppex.

It took me considerably longer than 3 minutes in the US on broadband. 4 hours sounds like some of the horror stories I've heard from the backwaters of the Phillipines.
I really wish that the US would get its Internet act together. Come to think of it, I really wish the world would come to understand what the Internet means, what its implications are. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Hope it is okay to ask. What is it about full install
that make you recommend it for your version?

Edit
Thanks for the answer. Ooh then I use the older kernel then. But it works okay
