Could we have a Samba SFS for Slacko 5.3? (Solved)

Has anyone created SFS package for Samba file sharing?
I downloaded samba-3.6.1-full.pet from http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... es-slacko/
and I works like a charm.
The problem is that it takes up +100 MB in my save file.
I tried to create a sfs file the following way:
1) put the pet in a directory under /mnt/home
2) run 'pet2tgz' samba.pet
3) open the tarball with XArchive and extract all
4) make a sfs from the resulting directory with 'dir2sfs samba'
5) move the sfs to /mnt/home
6) load with sfs_load

That resulted in a semi-usable sfs file. I can share files, but I can only access the computer by the IP address and not the hostname.
This seems to be caused by the fact that the process 'nmbd' will not run with this sfs package.
(This also messes up the browsing on all the Windows(R) computers.)

I'm running Slacko 5.3 with a frugal install to hard drive.

Hmmm.... doesn't seem to be quite what I'm looking for.
Two things:
1)it appears to be for Lucid Puppy
2)i searched all the pages (using the 'find' feature in my browser) and could only find 2 references to "sfs", neither of which were for a Samba package

Oh wait! The Slacko repository does have Samba-TNG pet. While I would rather stick with the "standard" version, this gives me two more options.
1) Use the Samba-TNG pet
2) Convert the Samba-TNG pet to a sfs package

I'll give those a try and report back.
Still, if anyone can point me to a sfs package for Samba that works with Slacko Puppy 5.3 I'd be grateful.

I know it's not an SFS package, but the samba-TNG is miniscule by comparison to main samba, but has pretty much all the functionality.

I have it installed, and it doesn't increase my save file by much more than a couple of meg.

Shinobar does have an SFS of samba though..

Please note that the samba pet in the slacko repo is re-uploading. There were wrong permissions on /var and /var/samba/spool which could break other things on your system.

You don't need to redownload, just change the permission on var to 777 and /var/samba/spool to 1777. This maybe why your sfs failed.

i think /var to 755 and /var/samba/spool to 1777.
But anyway it works when /var/samba/spool is 1777.

Ok I made an sfs, just some slight modification was needed of the pet.

Okay, the samba-tng-rcrsn-0.5-rc1 pet from the Slacko repository did the trick. It only required changing one line and adding another to my old smb.conf file to get it working.
I may try one ov the other options offered at some later point in time if I find Samba-TNG to be lacking some functionality that I need.
At this point, all I need to do is share one folder with my windows computers.

I'm amazed at the difference in the sizes ov these two Samba projects.
I wonder how that is.

Okay, the samba-tng-rcrsn-0.5-rc1 pet from the Slacko repository did the trick.

Cool . I did extensive testing with samba-tng and that's why it's in the repo.

Full samba certainly has more features but the average Puppy user probably wouldn't need them.

Samba-TNG has a few eccentricities, but they can all be worked around by following the examples in the How-To. And it appears to work well with Win7 clients in spite of the move towards the new SMB2 protocol.

I know this thread is "solved", but I though this post worth mentioning

AM running a Live media SLACKO 5.3.1. The full SAMBA 3.61 included from PPM runs every device that I have, including the dlink entertainment network devices that would ONLY talk to my Vista/Windows7/SP4 PCs.

This is, by far, the best SAMBA implementation ever seen for getting newbies started and sharing folders/files/peripheral (ie floppy/CD/DVD/USB) on the LAN with all LAN devices.

Be sure to turn on SMB2 for any/all 2010-2011 MAC/2008 servers as well as any LAN devices that only mentions Windows Vista/System7, you have.
