mikeb,
Awesome! This is a Puppy! I just ripped a 2.5 hour movie down to 300mb at 480 width. It's still has very acceptable quality even with the viewing window expanded a bit.
It occurs to me that most folks will want to use the MB (size) target for ripping unless they have a good idea of how large the file will be if they rip based on a percent of quality. For instance, to get on a 700mb cd, (which would seem a common purpose) you would shy away from a .5 setting and probably set a target of 600mb instead. I've noticed that the actual ripped file is usually just a bit above what is requested. I set the above movie at 300mb and it ended up at 310mb. No big deal, but I would have hated to set to 700mb to get on a cd and have it end up at 720mb. People should be aware of this small potential difference.
Another thing I'm sure you are aware of is that because this works on the fly, its perfect for smaller storage drives like pen drives and the new solid state drives gaining popularity in netbooks. I ripped the last movie totally using ram and swap. This deserves some press on the forum! You should give it another go, I'll bet you'll find much more interest this time if people understand these capabilities. I will certainly give it kudos.
Like I indicated before, I'm trying to get an integrated audio visual suite put together that will do the things that most folks I know would want. But I want to keep it small and simple. On to the next part of the project!

480 is a serving suggestion....some movies are very widescreen and need more...multiples of 16 are the safest bet. Width could be a drop down selection perhaps.
There is also a cropping option I did not include partly because it needs disabling for subtitles.
Indeed I try to control file size by movie dimensions...a 25% reduction gives a 50% file reduction. Using a quality factor give a consistant result....setting a size can give blocky fast action in some cases. I usually allow 10Mb...680 or 690 is a safe bet. Most useful for longer films say 2hours +. Avidemux has a bitrate calculator which is the other approach....anything above 500b/s gives good results. If quality is used I often end up with considerably less than 700MB.
Well glad it's doing what you need
regards
mike
