Using Slacko 5.3 with previous lupusave

#1 Post by rincon155 »

I am a happy user of Lucid Puppy 5.2.8, but I am curious about Slacko 5.3.
Can I simply boot up with the new Slacko 5.3 CD and will it use my existing lupusave in HDD? Or will I have to create a new lupusave file for Slacko?
Thank you.

It sets up a new save file called "slackosave.2fs"

I did not find a way to get my lupusave.2fs to trf to "slackosave.2fs" but the more adventurous might try booting from the live disk , opening a filer window for root and one for the lupu stick and maybe transfer all the files accross

Would that work or is there an easier way ?
Someone else will help with this shortly I am sure

Simple answer NO!!

Slacko 5.3 and Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 are very different Puppies. Their save files are not compatible. They are entirely different versions of Puppy.

You will need a fresh new install and fresh save file for Slacko 5.3.

You can do a frugal install of Slacko 5.3, along side Lucid 5.2.8, and do a dual boot setup.
Any programs you want to have in Slacko 5.3 will have to be installed fresh to Slacko.

General rule:
If the name is different, it is a different version of Puppy and has its own save file specific to that version.

Program pets are compatible, across different versions of Puppy, but not 100% guaranteed.
Some versions of Puppy, may require program pets, to be compiled for them, or updated to work.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thank you tytower and bigpup for your posts. I now understand the the very different nature of both Puppys
How can I do the dual boot? If I install Slacko 5.3, having Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 a new save file will be created, with a different name, and after reboot with the Slacko CD, the program will look for its own save file.
It isn't really that I am interested in doing dual boot, but to understand what will happen if I boot with Slacko in my system that already has a save file from Puppy 5.2.8.

If you boot with a Slacko 5.3 CD it will do nothing to what is already on the computer.
If you decide to make a Slacko save file, it will have no effect on Lucid Puppy 528.
Well, it will take up some space on hard drive.
When you reboot, with the Slacko CD, it will find and use the Slacko save file only.
The two versions of Puppy will stay completely separate.
How can I do the dual boot?
Easiest way is with frugal installs.
Do a frugal install of each version.
On the hard drive you will have two directories.
/puppy528
/slacko5.3
(these can be named whatever you want)
When making save files, put them in appropriate directory.

Now you need a bootloader, so you get a menu, to be able to select what version to boot, when booting up.
Menu->System->Grub4dos bootloader config
will install bootloader.

You do not say how you have your computer set up. If you have Windows on it and only run Puppy from boot-able CD's with save files, you may want to stay with that.
Loading a bootloader could replace the one Windows uses.

This info may help you understand more.
