Hello Puppyluvr, :)

You write:
Sky, you downloaded the source, which needs compiling to be installed...
Oh? ok,...so, whenever I see a file that ends in .orig.tar.gz I'll know it's source code and needs compiling to install? A new learning curve looms.
Thank you for noticing.

I'll try your applications and post results.... :)

Hello majorfoo,

Thank you for trying again.
You write:
1. Download following files

xscreensaver_5.15-2_i386.deb
xscreensaver-data_515.2_i386.deb
xscreensaver-data-extra_5.15-2_i386.deb
xscreensaver-gl_5.15.2_i386.deb
xscreensaver-gl-extra_5.15.2_i386.deb
I apologize for being so dense but where are these files located?
What are their actual address'?
or
What library are then in?
When I look in
http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/xscreensaver
there are no files with these names.
For example see screenshot: Deb_Search1
(Yes, I've tried Googling for the file.)

If you could be so kind as to point me toward the address of the files you list, we'd be in business. And, we can add 'solved' to the thread. :)

Also,
xorg_high.1.1 Lucid.pet downloaded and installed with no issues.

:D Hello,
@Sky, no...
tar.gz simply means compressed, (like .zip in windoze) and can contain anything...
If you see configure or make..
It is source code...

In your package manager "Setup/Puppy/Puppy Package Manager"
Do you have Ubuntu repos listed??
Search there..
Or..
The 5.12 pet I posted above works fine, and including GL savers, has 216 screensavers..
But the glslideshow function in xscreensavers has perl issues that I cant solve.. Not to mention needing functional GL graphics to work as well...
Hence the Slideshow pet above...
( Oh, dont D/L the slock script, it is flawed, and posted 'long ago' for assistance...)

:D Hello,
Hmm, they are all there for me..
2 things..
1 You must restart the PPM to update the repos...
2 You must enter xscreensaver, then choose a repo, then click "go"

OK, 3 things..
The lucid repo has 5.10..
pupxscreensaver is 5.12..

Thank you!

Ubuntu-lucid-multiverse and Ubuntu-lucid-main and Puppy-Lucid lists:
xscreensaver_5.10
xscreensaver_data_5.10
xscreensaver_gl_5.10

Ubuntu-lucid-universe lists:
xscreensaver-data-extra_5.10
xscreensaver-gl-extra_5.10

Must not have restarted PPM after update.

Will 5.10 work?

Note: majorfoo lists two more Debian files with similar names not shown in Ubuntu-lucid-universe. He lists:

xscreensaver-data_515.2_i386.deb not listed in Ubuntu-lucid-universe list

xscreensaver-gl_5.15.2_i386.deb not listed in Ubuntu-lucid-universe list

Hummm? I may have found a slideshow screensaver that works...

I just ran an old live CD called mi.pup 2.6-412 puplet
mi.pup 2.6-412 puplet has a slideshow screensaver in that seems to be working well.
The screensaver liner notes say this:
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Chooselocale country localisation
Icon=/usr/local/PuppyBasicScreensaver02/icon.xpm
Comment=Puppy Screensaver
Exec=/usr/local/PuppyBasicScreensaver02/setup-PB-screensaver
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=X-Desktop
GenericName=Setup Puppy Screensaver
This may be the same Puppy Screensaver maybe built by MU and listed here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 847#295847
I believe MU said he took BasicPuppyScreenSaver02 dotpup and repackaged as PuppyScreenSaver.pet.
I took his PuppyScreenSaver.pet download and installed it in Lucid Puppy 528.
The screensaver didn't activate. I'll look for missing files.
What would be needed to make this work in Lucid Puppy 52x?
Here is a screenshot of the control panel from the screensaver in mi.pup 2.6-412 puplet:

:D Hello,
majorfoo, nice find..
I somehow missed that...
When I make a 515 pet, I will add that in to the launcher...
The 5.07 pet didnt include GL, like pupxscreensaver (512) did, because then, not too many Puppy users were running GL/Mesa, like today...
I never knew that root user thing was inhibiting previews..
Really, some xscreensaver should be a standard...
BTW... Xscreensavers can run the Linux "Really Slick Screensavers" binaries... :)

Anyone overcome the perl error with glslideshow????

note to sky and puppyluvr

I compiled xscreensaver-515 today and it contains 200 screensavers, one of which is GlSlideshow. It shows no preview available when I select it. It I click on preview, receive the following messages

Glslideshow: unable to load font "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*180-*",using "fixed"
xscrensaver:13:55:04 -: child pid 21540 (glslideshow) terminated with signal 11

not sure how to handle this - can you provide advice

When you selected the settings on Xscreensaver-515, did you set it up this way?:

select GLSlideshow
In 'mode', did you choose 'Only One Screen Saver'
In 'Advance' did you choose 'Random Image' and put in a location from your home directory that holds images?

Do you have screenshot of the 'GLSlideshow settings' page?

Do you have any other screensavers running in the background?

Well, there seems to be an issue with either this Debian download or PetGet or perhaps something else.

The screensaver module content from XScreeensaver_5.15-2 are loaded into the menu list under 'desktop'. (I'd show you a screenshot but the menu disappears when I initiate ScreenGrabber.)
For Example: The savers from Xscreensaver_data which are 'Abstractle....Fuzzy Flakes...Swirl...etc are all listed in menu/desktop along with the usual desktop apps.

This is happening in 528, 525 running as Live CDs. (And, I think 520, but don't quote me.)

Sigh! Anyone have any clues?

no other screensavers running - trying to run GLSlideshow and it shows no preview available in window. If I click on preview, then I get the messages shown above regarding helvetica font and termination signal 11

Possible problem with my video card in older computer, bios shows feb 2005 and video card is on motherboard.

Have tried unsuccessfully to locate the helvetica font. Any ideas

BTW, did you get email from me with xsceensaver-5.14.pet attached

Did you create the script from link I provided earlier. If so, run xscreensaver from the script

Here's a very small striiped down Xscreensaver package for lucid, I removed all but one screensaver, its set for 5 mins to come on, I disabled the screensaver whenever gnome-mplayer is playing a video and when it stops the countdown starts again, If you want to permantly stop the screensaver, you can remove the link in /root/Startup/xscreensaver
if you want to increase/decrease the time just edit ./root/xscreensaver <-- hidden folder and the very first line of actual code says timeout: 0:05:00 that means five minutes. This contains no gui, etc just edit the time and you should be good. also if you temperately want to stop the screensaver just open a terminal and type killall xscreensaver and when you want to re-enable it, just open a terminal and type xscreensaver or just restartX server :)
