Is Slacko the new PL? |
|
Is this new Slacko 5.3 the newest PL or just an off-shoot? Thanks.

I asked similar question recently.

Beem gave a link to this one to explain how them comes about.
Devs get together and make variations using Woof and
if Barry Kauler like to see them as Official he present them
on his blog and give kudos to the devs and testers involved
and DW maybe present them as the official ones.
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Woof
I wonder if it still fail to show 1024 x 768 on my Acer D250
when I use and external screen. Other puppies do but not Slacko.
Is that to blame on Intel having crazy graphics or should one
not expect each Puppy to be able to handle same hardware maybe?

Doesn't seem to work as well on my P2 Dell laptop than PL 5.2.8.

Very difficult to understand, this thing of official releases, derivatives and pups.
If it says, 'Puppy,' the rule is that it's official, been accepted, considered mature and stamped with Barry Kauler's approval.
However, he also approves of people playing to see what they can come up with, and these modified forms of Puppy are called "Pups." Here's an example:
There is a Slacko, which is official Puppy release 5.3. BUT there's an 'Spup' which is not an official release, but rather a Pup, not an official release, but still fine in its own right.
Then there are derivatives. These have been based on Puppy, but in some way have taken a different path. Lighthouse and Macpup are sort of in this class, so the line between a pup and a derivative is blurry, if not downright artificial. The only clearcut derivative I can think of when my mind is not working at top condition (now) is LegacyOS, which began its life as TeenPup but soon became a very good general use system for older systems. What in my mind makes this a clearcut derivative is that it differs so much from its Puppy roots now that it has its own repository of packages since most puppy packages will not now work with it.
This is my take on the situation, but I'm sure if anything I've said is wrong someone will be along any minute now to educate both of us! And really, if I'm wrong, I'd like to know. How else do we learn?

Hello,
Yes, the definition between Puppy and Puplet can get blurry, since BK let loose the reigns..
And there have been forks as well, starting with grafpup, and imho, Ttuuxxx`s 214x series..
Macpup as well has become very self reliant...
Does one define a fork as having its own repos??
Puppy Linux, like no other, offers freedom to tinker, and share... Most puplets are 1-offs, or for testing..
Some are LTS, some are not...
Some even go off and become commercial...
puppylinux.org is the home of official releases...
This forum is home of the other 90%..
Gotta love free will...

If people review a version they review Puppy 5.3 'Slacko' as the latest
http://all-things-linux.blogspot.com/2011/11/puppy-slacko-53-with-added-woof.html
Barry considers it the version new users should try first
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy53
. . . on older or newer machines other options may be considered
This includes woof builds, remastered developments and derivatives
As 5.2 Lucid developed most support centered around this base but some preferred other choices. It is very much the more mature - or supported version currently.

There are many bug fixed release candidates leading to a
final official release.
I haven't found a final release that completely suits my
equipment or needs since the 4.xx Puppys, but have found
earlier rc candidates that work quite well, among the newer
woof builds.
It's good to test and save isos' that that appeal to you; they
may not be around forever.

tsk tsk and there was me thinking testing is altruistic
Just so. With Lucid it worked OK for me up to 5.11 and then something changed. (I am sorry I forget what) Fortunately for me and others the same thing was experienced by pemasu, who created updates and customisation of 5.11:
Ice Puppy

There was a time when Puppy was quite radically changed every 6 weeks. Sit still for too long and you become a meow meow and Puppy is dog power . . .

All Puppy variants I have tried struggle with setting 1024x768 resolution on my Intel hardware. Inevitably, they require manual tweaking of xorg.conf. With other distros 1024x768 just works. The xorgwizard needs a major overhaul.

Yes thanks. And how does one tweak it using the xorg.conf then?
I have been recommended to use it on Asus eeepc 900 and my eyes
are old and I use an external screen and it needs 1024 x 768 while
the internal screen is only x 600 so them conflict and some os gives
priority what the software see when looking for internal screen and
other os accept what one tell them regardless of what them see there.
I have a vague memory that I even have retold how to change it myself.
Di I not tell that one just deleted one part of the text and replaced it with
one from a lupu 528 that worked with 1024 x 768
Yes I did but have no clue on how to find it again. So typical Nooby.
I can not rely on my own memory, no access to the Puppy part of my brain
I had forgotten all about that solution I did find.
So now I need to search for it and use it again.
Edit can be this thread
When External screen was off JWM lost 1024 x 768. [Solved]
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72166
Quote: | I renamed the current xorg.conf to xorg-1024x600.conf
and renamed the old one from april 2011 to xorg.conf
and then restarted Xorg and it defaulted to 800 x 600
but I ran personal settings and now I have 1024 x 768 again.
So now I should save that pupsave file and mark it by this date
and that it has xorg.conf with 1024 x 768 |
typical I failed to tell where it is. is it this one?
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
suppose it is then I need to find one that actually works and copy the
needed text from that one to the one that does not work.
So can I borrow the one from lupu 528?

Here is how I see it.
The official versions of Puppy are the basic operating system. Have all the standard programs and functions.
The derivatives are the deluxe models with added features and programs.
Example:
An automobile.
There is the basic model that is a basic functional auto. Has the basic needed items and features.
Deluxe model. Same auto, but with all the added features and bling.
Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 is in a long term support position. Bug fix improvements stage. However it did stop at a point of hardware support.
Slacko 5.3 is the next step in improved support for newer hardware.
Wary is the version designed to provide some improved bug fixed support for older hardware, that the other two versions may not support well.

then it would not fail where Lupu 528 works? Sure it is maybe unusual
to use two screens but many do have problem reading when them get old
