Question about next Lucid Puppy releases.

#1 Post by SFR »

Hi.

Among various Puppy derivatives, Lucid fits my needs in a best way. I collected pretty amount of useful apps and I would like to be assured, because I'm slightly lost:
Slacko 5.3 is Slackware-compatible build and I read somewhere that Slacko 5.3 is the next official release. Version number suggests it too (5.2.8. -> 5.3)...
I thought that there are three completely independent 'official' Puppys (Wary, Lucid & Slacko), but now I'm not sure...
I hope it doesn't mean, that there won't be next Lucid Puppy releases?
IOW: Does Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 becomes Slacko 5.3?

Greetings!

No.
Lucid 5.2.8 is Ubuntu based
Slacko is slaxer based.
Different bases.
But Lucid is very mature.

Personally I use upup (lucid) spup (slacko) and dpup exprimo (debian)

My applications run on all these platforms.

You have to evaluate which one fits your personal needs.
Don't focus on a version being 5.3 which in fact might not fit your needs.

Confusing? Yes.

Thanx for clarification :)

So, it means, that every .pet from Lucid repository is compatible with i.e. Slacko, with exception of .deb packages and .pets based on Ubuntu, am I right?

I asked a similar question recently-- there was one response:

Yes, as I said over there it really does seem to be a crap-shoot on what will work and what won't sometimes because when you are compiling a program you are compiling it for that specific distro and others might be missing libs/dependencies/requirements. For example I compiled Openvpn from source in 528 however it does not work in Slacko and I had to recompile it for it to work properly.

So, there's no 100% compability between these two...
Luckily, there's also JAVA.
BTW:
- Knock, knock.
- Who's there?
[long pause]
- JAVA

Thanx for all respones.

Each distro comes with it packages compiled for it.
So this means that those in slacko and those in lucid aren't necessarily exactly binary the same, but functionally wise they are the same.

Each distro has it's repository for it. Those pets can be retrieved through the Puppy Package Manager. If you download/install such a pet they are supposed to work on that distro, but there is no guaranty, that a pet from the slacko repository runs on lucid.

Again, slacko aims at compatibility with slacko binaries, lucid with ubuntu binaries ( but there is a fair chance .deb's run also) and dpup debian ones.

And indeed a java application is platform independent.

Applications I use are Java, OpenOffice, SeaMonkey (which I download directly from their website as tar.gz) Those ones run on my three platforms.

So I hope you understand somewhat more now.
