People who need kernel source sfs, do know what to do with it. You can compile extra...third party kernel module drivers with kernel source sfs.
Also if some module is missing but included with kernel version...you can compile the kernel with sources again and include that missing module and then install the modules with INSTALL_MOD_PATH to safe location and extract that missing module to the kernel pet so that next build puppy has that module included. Or provide it as extra pet.
I have done extra compiles for ndiswrapper and wireless drivers.

Starting a conversation by stating that you're too lazy to do you're own basic research isn't likely to get lots of people running to your aid. But as you've indicated that you had a serious question, and as I myself didn't know what kernel sources were for, I ran a "wellminded search" and in about 30 seconds found out that they are sometimes needed to compile stuff. Which, to me, seems like the long way to go about changing a pupmode. But what do I know?
You may be right. It would be a good idea if devs were to spell out everything they provide to us. But then, developing stuff might have more of the characteristic of a job where you have to spend more time filling out forms and writing explanatory reports then actually building stuff.
In a perfect world, our devs should be as creative as pemasu and as verbose as I.

Thanks for the info pemasu; I now have some idea for what this sfs is useful.
I'll keep re-reading it until I THINK I understand.

When I tried to make the pupsave file at 1st reboot...
It asked if I wanted to make one, and went through the motions..
Except toward the end, it didn't display a list of storage devices that I could choose to save on...
And when booting back in...
No pupsave was found...
Because no pupsave had been made.

(b) Is that because there are no suitable drivers [for storage devices?] included in the kernel?

(c) How do I get it to make a pupsave file?

Possibly a bad download, however you can try shinobar's pupsaveconfig. which IMO is better for save file creation at first shutdown.

I believe your faced problem with using live cd and trying to create savefile to the usb has something to do with scripts regarding savefile....like shutdownconfig...rc.shuthdown, it is possible that my fixes to the binaries which are also called may be responsible. Savefile creation and installation needs working framework of scripts and binaries. I know the problem about non booting from usb but that has been fixed in init script level. Kernel also has usb-storage.patch which I believe Iguleder has included in 2.6.39.4 kernel.
I will test your situation when I have time. I am now busy with next 3.1 kernel test version.

In my next 3.1 kernel all relevant puppy patches has been included also.

I have used libre office downloader called Get Libre Office from the menu. It downloads and creates sfs of Libreoffice automatically. I used it to make finnish Libre Office to my son and it worked ok for me. I have also en Libre Office sfs created by the same 01mickos great app. I think that I have uploaded one Libre Office sfs also to the repo. Use sfs downloader icon to get list of available sfs applications.
In exprimo repo is the pet Libreofficehandlers which creates needed mime bindings and rox right clicks for Libre Office. Makes life easier.
About your long list. I am not sure what do you want to report with it ?

For whatever it's worth. I automatically add "nosmp" to the code on all my single-core hardware.May or may not make a difference in most cases so I just add it to be cautious.

SUCCESS!

1. Made the pupsave [named squeezesave] using Pupsaveconfig, then uninstalled Pupsaveconfig and used my usual method of editing rc.shutdown to be given a "Save the session = Yes/No" at shut-down/reboot.
For info see this.

2. Was also able to edit the isolinux.cfg file on the ISO, so that my pupsave on an internal HDD is treated as if a pupsave on a Flash Drive.
Here's the method I used.

3. Haven't yet been unable to do anything I want to do.

4. How do I make larger the text I see as I type in the "Message body"?
It also displays too small.
Used "View->Zoom", but it doesn't look good.
Zoomed yet again, and it doesn't look too bad, almost acceptable.

Edoc and James C. I am not familiar with nosmp command. I mean I dont know what it overrides if the kernel is smp compiled. I think you need to read the kernel boot time command reference manual. I remember I posted it once to the forum when someone asked about it. So there should be some obscure thread about boot time codes - commands somewhere in this forum. Kernel.org had that reference manual somewhere in their web pages.

James C. Thanks. So....using maxcpus=0 or nosmp should do the uniprocessor trick. Disabling IO APIC might have side effects so the maxcpus=0 could be reasonable.

Edit if I understood it right, maxcpus=1 restrict the cpus to one in smp kernel without disabling IO APIC. The description was little obscure for non-english person.

after installing OpenOffice with the Package Manager I get the following error when trying to start any of the modules:

"/root/%U does not exist"

What did I wrong? How can I overcome this and make the application start?

I wonder what OpenOffice did you download. I havent uploaded OpenOffice to the Exprimo repo.
But...go to /usr/share/applications. Right click the OpenOffice something or swriter or whatever related .desktop files which that pet installed ....and choose open as text. Remove %U from exec row. Do that to every .desktop file that pet installed.
I would have recommend you to use sfs apps loader icon (in jwm) and downloaded LibreOffice it offers.
Or in menu > document > get libre office which downloads and creates the libre office sfs in your comp, if you have done savefile and you use frugal install method. Not sure how sfs works with full installs. Needs some tricks I think. There isnt any layered system needed in full installs.
