Fatdog 64 newbe user problems
Hi Everyone
With my WinXP getting slower and slower I decided to install Linux on a spare drive and thought I would go for the 64bit version of puppy as I had all sorts of problems trying to install Ubuntu on my hardware SATA drives XFC mother board and Nivdia video and sound cards.
Implementation has been so far quite good and the system is running from CDrom and picking up installed files from the new hard drive. However, before I install the system fully I thought I would check with you on few issues:
1 the sound output is low volume despite loading a specific prompted NVIDIA driver. From reading the forum and blogs this seems to be a recurrent puppy feature. If so I will waste no more time on it and try and improve my hearing but your advice is appreciated?
2. The USB printer is not detected by the CUPs system. I have a DELL 3130cn LASER PRINTER ...again any advice appreciated?
3. I installed WINE from the fatdog repository and via the boot manager installed this on boot-up. I can see the wine icons in the desktop, utility , filesystem and document sections, but clicking on them doesn't seem to do much! Any advice appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation

Here is a driver package for your Dell 3130cn. This appears to be a Postscript-capable printer, so the package just contains a PPD file. No other driver code is necessary.
Since you are running this as a USB device, installation should be routine.

Joe,
Wine is 32 bit, so it needs the Fatdog 32 bit compatibility libs http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... libs-6.sfs
Also 32 bit apps need to be executed with start32. For example
start32 wine 'path to whatever' .
start32 is already included in Fatdog
I hope I got that right. Not in Fatdog ATM.

sound volume
Hi joerice 50
by my expierence with many puppy derivatives it happens often, that, by default, in the alsa-mixer the volume controler of the front speaker is not fully open. So before You use any application, open alsa-mixer in the /menu/multimedia section and turn the main volume plus the front speaker volume to 100%. After that open the volume control of Your device to the level that is convenient for You.
All in all I also found, that the total possible volume in fatdog is a little bit lower than that for example of lucid puppy.
Regards Payoon

Dear All
Thanks for all the helpful advice I will try implementing these tips later today and update you on progress. I did wonder before posting my note whether I should post here or in the beginners section of puppy, from your helpful suggestions I take it you welcome new user fatdog queeries here too?

Actually bug reports and questions about Fatdog64 belong in the Fatdog64 thread but here is okay.
Hi All
I can report success on the following:
1 Sound output increased after following your advice the output level is acceptable....Thanks for the info
2. The WINE system is working fine again thanks for your advice.
Printing
However, I still have problems with printing despite installing the suggested printer driver.
The System detects a USB printer and a connected N8 Nokia phone see:

But the kernal module = 0 mostly and only on this last run has it dispalyed usblp!
I suspect there is no detected software to connect to the printer..
If I run CUPS is displays the following:

LPD/LPR Host or Printer
Windows Printer via SAMBA (smbclient)
Internet Printing Protocol (http)
Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)

Questions:
a. Should I get a USB printer selection above?
b, if so how can I force detection, or am I really missing the point somewhere? The printer driver software loaded fine with just a comment that there was no menu input.
b. I would like to connect to my Nokia N8 as a USB drive to download photos. The N8 has a brilliant camera & optics, in fact its so good I rarely take a camera anywhere now and rely on the N8. Plus since the updates to Symbian ^3 , Nokia are turning the N8 into a really cracking smartphone, so it would be nice to hook it up to Puppy.64 opps sorry fatdog.

This is confusing. On the one hand, you said that CUPS did not detect a USB printer, but the CUPS log shows one installed.
For the moment, unplug any other USB devices and restart the printer.
In the CUPS web interface, go to the Printers section. Is there a printer installed? If so, delete it. Run Add Printers again. Is your Dell printer detected? Is it listed in the Make/Model lists?

If, in fact, you have not installed a printer, I suspect that your Dell unit is not reporting itself to CUPS as a valid USB device. That's why it doesn't appear in the list of available printers and that's why you get the error message in the logs.
As a test, type this command:

Sorry for the delay in responding to your query.
I ran into a few unexpected medical issues which impacted my use of computers, so I had to concentrate on work related stuff, which I needed to run in a highly magnified formats. I made loads of mistakes, spreadsheets took me hours to complete, when they would only take a few minutes when I had normal sight. So I gave up on my recreational use of computers. I now have improved eyesight following a few operations, so I will resume my recreational computer activities and reacquaint myself with Fatdog64 installation and setup.
News:
Fatdog64 is now installed on second drive and I have a swap partition working etc. Fatdog boots from the second drive using the plop boot-loader (from win.ini) which leaves the windows boot menu largely unchanged an the default for my wife to use the computer without too much change.
I will explore the Dell printer install later in the week when I have some more time.
Anyway its nice to be back to recommence my use of fatdog.
Cheers
