Lobster thanks.

smokey01 is my Hero. Wow that was a good presentation.

The only thing just now that I feel unsure of is this iptel thing.

I mean why would them go on providing this service for free?

Who are they?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Perhaps you could do some research and provide an essay?

smokey01 wrote:Barry I have done the same.

Recompiled it in a virgin frugal of wary-5.2 and put the dotpet here:
http://www.smokey01.com/software/psip/P ... Wary52.pet

It seems to work better on later kernels and more modern equipment <10yrs.

I did have trouble installing devx. It kept complaining "there are too many menu item for pupdial to handle"

I installed and used load_sfs to get the devx to work, then it compiled fine.

The sound did droped out occasionally and the volume and mic sliders in the call window were set at zero and wouldn't move. Obviously a problem with sound.

We are not having the same problem with Lucid, Slacko, Fatdog or Dpup Exprimo.

We also had problems in Racy with the sliders. I'm not sure what you have done differently in racy and wary but something must be different to the others.

Cheers.
I regret upgrading Wary/Racy to GTK 2.24.5, as it does some things quite differently. That may be the cause of the problem.

Probably though in the long run it is good that I upgraded, once any issues are sorted out. Then of course the GTK 2.24.x series will remain as-is forever, the last of 2.x.

And not sure about my headsets either. And not sure which
Puppy that already have it installed?

And this iptel who are them really? Why give somethign for free
if it don't pay back? Such servers must cost a fortune?

hi all

A quick update

regarding the problems with older hardware (10 years plus) dogle has found that if you are using version 0.26 and reduce your call quality from 6 to 4 it actually improves the performance

catdude is compiling version 1.2 with the default sample rate set at 8000mhz instead of 16000mhz to try and prevent it locking up on older hardware which we will be hopefully testing tomorrow

cheers

1. "if you are using version 0.26 and reduce your call quality from 6 to 4 it actually improves the performance"
How/where should I do this?
I have 2003 hardware->running Lupu-526->Psip32 Puppy Phone version 0.26.

By-the-way, if anyone is wondering where I disappeared to during the conference, my son phoned from London->[you probably head the phone ringtone], so I muted my mic and took part in the call [my wife took it on the other phone downstairs, I was on the extension upstairs at the PC].
Whilst talking to him I could faintly hear the conversation coming from the earphones which were lying on top of my desktop PC.

Isn't modern technology wonderful? :D

hi Sylvander

I thought you sounded great in the conference call yesterday but if you think it could be better this is what to do:-

choose "configure" then "edit config file" in the main psip window

the line number in the version I have is 28 and reads

--quality 6 #Can be changed between 1 - 10, 10 being the best.

simply change the 6 to a 4 and save the file, psip may have to be restarted for the change to take effect.

and if it does not work for you simply change it back

hope this helps

I have no complaints about the quality of sounds I'm hearing.
Except I did notice that when Lobster spoke lots/continuously and rapidly, he was breaking up somewhat.
Should I leave well alone?
What kind of performance improvement is involved anyway?
And only obtained when sound quality is sacrificed?
Performance and sound quality as measured by what?
Data throughput?
Sample rate?
Frequency range?

dogle's sound quality was better than it usually was, he seemed to not be breaking up as much, and he said that's what he was trying. but I thought you sounded great with no breaking up of the sound at all.

I am not a developer  just trying to pass on information that may be of use to others that are having issues.

hope you understand

Don

another tip from smokey01 and JamesBond
If you want to make a party call (3 or more people) use the conference room (you can use any room as long as it is empty not just 528) as when more users join a party line the resources needed increase exponentially.

:)

My mental break up is on going . . .
Sanity is no way to cope with reality . . .

Dogles voice was much clearer as others have noticed.
I left 10 minutes to set up Puppy phone in Slacko rc2 - it took me 40 minutes . . .

1. Make sure your mic is working - it actually took me 30 mins to realise that no one could hear me . . .
2. Get the latest available compile - that should be 1.2
3. Do both iptel tests (music and echo)
4. Make sure in preferences you are linked to the right sound card

Thanks for the chat, testing, updating, info on Titanic, etc. guys :)

which pkg is best for me?

#433 Post by sc0ttman »

Sorry for being dumb, but I'm getting confused! Which package is best for me? I wanna stick the latest stable puppyphone into Akita, which basically has a Wary 5.1.x 'core', so a Wary 511 pet would probably work best...

Or, I would be happy to compile it, but can't seem to find sources or build scripts...

Sources with build instructions here: https://chiselapp.com/user/jamesbond/re ... psip/index. Login as "anonymous", then click the "Timeline" link. From there, choose which release you want to use (generally speaking you want to use the latest one, which is at the top, or you can use the 1.2 release). From there, click the "tarball" link.
cheers!

Hi all

sorry to report that the modification to 1.2 reducing the default bit rate to 8000mhz did not improve the compatibility with older hardware,

Stripe, thanks for passing on the 'gen
regarding the problems with older hardware (10 years plus) dogle has found that if you are using version 0.26 and reduce your call quality from 6 to 4 it actually improves the performance
- but I fear that some confusion has crept in, this was all about poor internet connection quality not older hardware.

I'll post more info. which I hope will be helpful to sc0ttman et al. shortly, when I've had chance to do some more tests.

On Sundays call, we assured him that Dogles voice was much clearer (no breaking up). He then asked a question and I did not understand, even though his voice is very clear
So there is still some break up but it is much improved . . .

I find the disable Firewall Yes/No part of the initial setup confusing
but then I was once confused by a red herring . . .

Anyway I have revived my Puppy Phone wizard.
Which should work for most people setting up in Slacko.

I have not petted it because that confuses me much like that herring . . .

Sorry I haven't read through this whole thread but just a quick question, is there a reason my iptel.org address works with the new client but not my ekiga.net address.

@Lobster

1. "I find the disable Firewall Yes/No part of the initial setup confusing"
When I tell it to NOT disable the firewall, it disables it anyway. :?

2. "I have not petted it because that confuses me much like that herring"
That's a pity...
I know what to do with a PET file, but not with a .tar.gz file. :(

I know what to do with a PET file, but not with a .tar.gz file
click on the .tar.gz
extract files
right click on the extracted shell script
and change its permissions
then clicking on the script file will run it . . . 8)
