Photorec and Testdisk 6.12

#1 Post by DPUP5520 »

Lastest stable version ofTestdisk and Photorec to replace the old beta pet

TestDisk is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.PhotoRec is free - this open source multi-platform application is distributed under GNU General Public License. PhotoRec is a companion program to TestDisk, an app for recovering lost partitions on a wide variety of file systems and making non-bootable disks bootable again.

One thing about this pet that isn't in any other testdisk and photorec pet is that there is a menu entry for both of them once you install the pet, I believe under Utilities, for those who would install the pet and then not know to open from the terminal, or for those like me who just like to point n click.

When testdisk recovers a partition table...
Does it simply restore a backup copy?

Or does it scan the contents of the drive...
And use info obtained to rebuild the partition table?

hi sylvander,

afaik testdisk tries to recover the partition table on base of bios-information and the drive itself.

For more information, try here http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step

As soon as i can maintain a decent connection I promise to update. Testdisk and Photorec are almost at 6.14 now! Shows how lazy I've been.
