Notes

Note that the main release is k2.6.37.6.

Why? It supports the vast majority. I have only provided "++" versions with 2.6.39.4 as demand warranted. While PAE might suck, Linus' words, supporting 2 puppy releases (essentially the same but with varying degrees of HW compatibility) can suck more! I will provide "++".. later Cool .

Not much change in this release really, which is how it should be, Woof is the biggest change but as woof goes it was a conservative update from Barry, but there are a couple of critical bugfixes.

Anyway.. have fun.. and be patient if you await "++" Wink

Cheers!

good info for micko Cool

My download was swift but I just had to unblock my sink. So there are different bottlenecks . . . Confused (nice monitor lizard)

Download OK to London
did an upgrade (by mistake) - looked OK
did a pristine boot (as I meant) looking good.

Good news - the mkv file I was having problems with in both Gnome mplayer and VLC - played perfectly in the default video (mplayer)
- notice there has been a rollback . . . maybe that solved it . . .
- I have not upgraded to crystal ATI graphic driver - so it may be that.

OK time to play.

Thanks micko Smile

Sub_title: USB SAVE

I am back after creating a CD and booting with it.
I had a USB flash drive plugged in that contains a slackosave.2fs file on a fat partition.
I clicked on the desktop Save button at 1:45 my time. It is now 2:00 my time and the splash message at the top of the screen which says "Saving RAM to 'pup-save' file..." is still present.
I had assumed that Barry had fixed that in the newest Woof.
Also, one would assume that that message would disappear when the save was completed. But it is not happening and that splash message has predominance as it displays on top of any other window opened.

My /tmp/xerrs.log shows the following in relation to the save attempt. I am showing it for use for further debugging as to why the splash message does not disappear.
How do I check if that procedure crashed silently?
EDIT START
It has been about 30 minutes since the first save and the Auto Save has kicked in and again I have that splash that does not disappear with a repeat of the quoted text from /tmp/xerrs.log.
EDIT END

Almost forgot! After the auto save, a system link called "yaf-splash" appeared in /tmp and it pointed to /usr/sbin/gtkdialog3.
gtkdialog3 on Slacko is a system link to gtkdialog.
Remember that Bary is using the original gtkdialog3 and gtkdialog in slacko is gtkdialog4 to him.
I do not know if a system link that points to another system link can mess things up, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Is that an old save file? If so then I'm not sure your results are relevant. Please test pfix=ram. If the results persist then surely it's a bug but with an old save too much could be on the top layer.

Thanks for being onto this issue, let's hope we get it fixed.

Cheers.

Oh, just saw your "almost forgot".. that's normal Wink There should be no incompatibilities between gtkdialog3 and 4 in slacko.. I did say "should" Wink

appendix: I'll do some testing tomorrow as I'll have access to wifey's macbook, best way to use the macbook is boot from CD, save to usb. I already did tests on an actual usb install and the message goes away when the process is completed, that was on a eee-701SD and my P4 brookdale.

Sub_title: Saveproblem and solution.

I think I have found the problem.
I examined /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d and in particular lines 517 to 527.
I then copied them without a call to save to the pupsave and added a short sleep line.
Evidently the program id for yaf-splash is not being got correctly because it does not get killed as intended.

Maybe one of our members can make sense of this.

Code:

#! /bin/bash
yaf-splash -font "8x16" -outline 0 -margin 4 -bg orange -placement top -text "Saving RAM to 'pup_save' file..." &
  YAFPID=$!
sleep 0.5  # My added line
#  sync
#  nice -n 19 /usr/sbin/snapmergepuppy

  kill $YAFPID

As I mentioned in the Slacko RC thread is the
Code:
-font "8x16"
argument that makes yaf-splash to look for the old yaf-splash. This trigers a second instance of yaf-splash so the kill $YAFPID kills the first at the end of the merging but the second stays with us.
Issuing the command without '-font "8x16"' "fixes" the problem.
