Tman. Thank you of your feedback and your compliments. I hope we will see your aesthetics results at some time. I know what you can do when you let your spirit free.

Edoc. I am not sure if there is any use to try remove something which is included. of course you can use tools like Woofy and really remove with remastering. There is also Remove builtin packages in Menu which can be used with Remastering.
Firefox is easy to remove even manually during remaster. I have done things like that with Edit-SFS app. But is there really need for that. Just add Seamonkey and use its Mail and use whichever for browsing. I think that is much easier and more reasonable solution. Puppy`s nature with readonly sfs is really not so adapted for removing. Of course if you want to learn how to really remove apps with all the stuff which come with it, it is useful step when you want to learn things beneath the hood. But that is of course another story. It is called learning and educating yourself how Puppy works.

I dont use remastering tools at all. I use woof for adding and removing stuff. Edit-SFS for updating sfs apps is really handy though. I use it a lot.

I can upload my Seamonkey pet to the Exprimo repo....if that helps.

Blo*dy brilliant Pemasu thanks. No problems except vertical edge scrolling not working on touchpad. Otherwise fast and elegant. Gnumeric *13 is a bit old now, but later versions are bigger of course.
EDIT scrolling fixed by configuring edges in GUI.

I'm building the latest stable Abiword and Gnumeric under Next at the moment, they're not THAT big and should work just fine under pemasu's puplets too.

Great Iguleder. I noticed your previous uploads in Next thread. But the Abiword pet was not included due to size. Could you upload your Abiword-Goffice-Gnumeric stuff to your repo or...at least those which you cant upload to the Next thread. Or upload your magnificent build scripts.
But the pets would be just fine.I will upload them as combined or separated pets and combined sfs to the Exprimo repo if it is all right with you.

installed 5x8, pemasu did you notice the iso has the same name as the smp 5x8? of course, it is not the same the size is about 1mb different.

first noticed lack of quickpet and htop which is just the first two things happen to do with new pups. idrive panel once clicked on can't get it turned off. but when idrive was on it did not reliable open and close partition drives.

will continue testing out next few days. thanks

noticed the nosave power off script in /my-applications/bin/ did shut down computer but changes I had made such as my location in the weather app and browser changes were saved. thought nosave did not save anything?

--------
snap2 gave error msg. Program rsync missing and needed to run but did open. have not used before is this file really needed?

--------
installed x_High and mesa

Fresh manual frugal install of 5.X.8 on my main Athlon XP linux box.No problems except that Adobe Flash wouldn't download from "Getflash Install Flashplayer". That one took me about ten seconds to fix.
As expected, everything else working ootb.

kernel naming

#1070 Post by shinobar »

On Dpup Exprimo 5.X.8:

Code: Select all

# uname -r
2.6.39
This name is not proper because the kernel is customized from the general 2.6.39.

On Dpup Exprimo 5.X.8 SMP:

Code: Select all

# uname -r
2.6.39.4
This is better, but a problem is that Barry uses same name '2.6.39.4' for Racy-5.1.101 and Slacko also has same name.
Three different kernels in same name...

Thanks people. I am glad that this version has been downloaded, tested and I get feedback. Feedback is the the fuel for the builder.
Jim3630. Is Snap2 really needed. I dont know. Pbackup is not anymore updated or maintained. Zigberts words. Okay Snap2 is not maintained also, but...Snap2 is in Barrys repo and I want to present nice Puppy apps in my distros. Rsync missing. Good pick. Well, you get it easily from squeeze repo, but it was not intentional.
Nosaveshutdown. Well...I left it there. It does not serve any purpose for me. In PUPMODE=12 (normal frugal install), the saves are written straight to the savefile. That script does not help. In PUPMODE=13 (usb install), that script should prevent the saves if you have disabled the saving interval.

Htop missing. Okay...I can include it to the next version, again....you get it easily from squeeze repo. And....my choice is Lxtask. In JWM, right click freemem_applet in tray. It has surprise.

Shinobar. Thank you of more profound analyze. Kernel name. Yep...it is not proper. Even woof choked with 2.6.39 + 2.6.39.4 symlink compo. I had to remove symlink and add it manually during building. I posted about it in 5.X.8 SMP thread. It is due to Iguleders build script I think. The kernel is Iguleders compile and as I posted. There is 2 reasons why I test it. To get more feedback and to test gtk applications responses. Anyway...In my tests Iguleder has done good job with his kernel. It works well. Thanks Iguleder.

Nvidia driver. Gee....Yuhuu....Thanks !!!! That driver pet will be in the repo asap.

All the other. Keep the feedback rolling. It helps me to evaluate what should be done for next version.

James C. You seem to have flash download problem with all my builds. Lol. And thanks of the feedback.

OK, I'll clarify things a 'lil bit.

Traditionally, kernel packages contained a kernel version specified in the package pet.specs and the file name.

Then, once I introduced the kernel build script, I patched the kernel so kernel X.Y.Z appears as X.Y to allow an easy upgrade to X.Y.Z+1. Woof worked great at this point.

I always put a symlink with the real kernel version under /lib/modules, so advanced users have an easy way to find out which kernel they use.

However, in one of his packages, Barry decided to change this and made Woof check /lib/modules and now it thinks that the kernel is 2.6.39.4 instead of 2.6.39 (I mean, it's 2.6.39.4 really, masked as 2.6.39). This is kinda annoying and I'm too lazy to fix the package, so I just edit Woof and make the kernel version hardcoded to 2.6.39.

pemasu

what I was asking since snap2 opened after flashing that msg.

"the Program rsync is missing and needed to run"

and appeared to run without rsync is rsync really needed for snap2 to work?

do you know what function rsync has in snap2? thanks

Snap2 needs rsync. Rsync is essential. It was my mistake that I left rsync out. Easily fixed if you want to create backups with Snap2.
There is dedicated thread about Snap2:

HI pemasu ! hi everyone !
Burnt 5X 8 to multisession CD

1) First tried to connect to internet (version 5X7 works without any problem).
Trouble connecting to internet.
My network is shown and says is connected but not the IP number is shown.
tried firefox go to internet "server not found" although frisbee says is connected to network.
OK... following happened .....after a while message appeared if i want to
download flash ... i said yes now (unexpectedly flash download suddenly started ...i was connected.) Firefox worked too.
Ok ...prepard (geparted) USB stick for installing 5X8 to it .
Installation went ok >shutdown >saving session>started up USB insstall>came up... internet connections where not saved >tried to establish it(first with frisbee ..later with puppy internet connection wizard) > no chance. But said network is connected..but no IP is shown.
Frisbee and internet connection wizard shows my network ,but is not able to get the IP number.

2.)I put my old savefile (from exprimo 5X7 on this Usb ),loaded this with my new 5X8 installation (during bootup it asked if i want to upgrade to 5X8 (i did)
booted fine ... but ... my USB mouse did not work anymore ..touchpad does.
Same problem with internet connection.Frisbee and internet connection wizard shows my network ,but is not able to get the IP number.
My machine is a Toshiba 3000 with an Atheros AR242X/AR542Xwireless network adapter (driver ath5k)
Anybody else similar problems?

Re: kernel naming

#1080 Post by shinobar »

@pemusu, James C and Iguleder

For your information, i show you how Barry is naming the kernel at Wary-5.1.4.1 + kernel_src-2.6.32-smp-45-patched.sfs.

Code: Select all

# uname -r
2.6.32-smp
# ls /lib/modules
2.6.30.5 2.6.31.14 2.6.32.28 2.6.32-smp 2.6.33.2 2.6.39.4 all-firmware
# ls /usr/src
linux linux-2.6.32-smp
Postscript:
Additional link such as like /usr/src/linux-2.6.32 linking to /usr/src/linux-2.6.32-smp is resonable.
The importance is what is the basename of 'readink /usr/src/linux' (should be 'linux-2.6.32-smp').
