NOTES
Kernels for RC and RC++ are identical to B5 and B5++. I could make a ton of excuses, no excuses.
Everything is in place. Slickpet should work as expected for drivers and correct kernel sources. Please test. Much stuff has filtered through to mirrors, but k2.6.39.4 and source rc devx is still uploading [1800hrsGMT 111007].
Legacy video-update-wizard is gone
Still need to upload lang packs.
Compile stuff please.. post pet.specs, make sure it's compiled in Slacko! [ ]
I'm out of town for about 10 days in half an hour.
Enjoy!

Here be goannas
Slacko should be fully reproducible from woof with these attached files.
Delete Packages-puppy-slacko-official from your woof tree, a new one will be downloaded from ibiblio, if not grab it from there.
Accept most defaults and xz for 2.6.39.4
Have fun!

test of Slacko RC k.2.6.32.7 on Laptop + siliconmotion video |
|
Hi Mick,
Enjoy your trip !
thanks for the ... string ! I couldnt resist to burn and test it on my Laptop (...Siliconmotion video) before this thread got opened !
This post several times edited after various testings of slacko 5.29.5 on this Laptop:
1. booting with pfix=ram: if SiliconMotion driver is <choosen> among the full list of drivers, then xorgwizard returns to prompt.
[an xorg.conf file has however been created, verified doing cd /etc/X11.]
Code: | puppypc15601 login: root (automatic login)
# |
2. further, starting again xorgwizard and choosing <Probe> instead, returns to the prompt after the "Silicon* enhancement" box. Here doing xwin brings X to a black screen.
At this point, doing whatever Alt-Ctrl-BS or Alt-Ctrl-Del or Ctrl-C doesn't bring anything! So did a "forced poweroff". No slackosave file saved.
3. Good news now: rebooting fresh again with pfix=ram and choosing <Probe> brings the X to start the desktop using vesa. Here a slackosave.3fs file may be saved. Further attempts to set xorgwizard to the siliconmotion driver result as described in paragraph 2. above (drivers full list again).
(slacko has been installed by using a usb stick to copy the iso content to the Laptop; this live-cd indeed couldn't be red on its dvd reader ... happens somme times)
4. Now on the savefile created under 3. above having installed:
-xf86-video-siliconmotion-1.7.5-i486.pet (see B5 thread)
-xf86-video-vesa-2.3.0-i486.pet
-xorgfor_Charlie-0.7.pet ... modified by editing /usr/sbin/xorgwizard replacing:
Code: | 207 wa) XKEYMAP="fr" ;; #wangbe |
by
Code: | 207 be) XKEYMAP="be" ;; #be-latin1 |
then starting xorgwizard again and choosing <Probe> brings automatically "smi" driver to be active .
Moreover; deleting the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/synaptics.conf brings the touchpad to be active.
Touchpad setting with Flsyclient returns
Code: | Error: synaptics module not loaded |
Big difference with the earlier tests on B5: here xorgwizard always proposes the drivers full list; there were only 'siliconmotion' and 'vesa' on last B5 tests.
During B5 testings, I have used a savefile created on slacko4.99.1 ... this maybe makes a difference too...?
5. Another way to get slacko 5.29.5 working is to update from an existing slackosave first created with versions 4.99.1 or 4.99.2 (i.e. frugal install) - not 4.99.4 and later !:
5.1 xorg.conf just needs being edited by adding
Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
Option "XkbLayout" "be" #xkeymap0
EndSection |
5.2 then install of
-xf86-video-siliconmotion-1.7.5-i486.pet
-xf86-video-vesa-2.3.0-i486.pet
-xorg_Charlie_indian.pet with modified xorgwizards line 207 (see 4. above)
(maybe it works too with the xorgfor_Charlie-0.7.pet ... not tested)
note:
- siliconmotion_drv.so present inside iso is 109K whereas 119K in the above pet
- vesa_drv.so inside iso is 21K whereas 26K in the above pet
Hope this helps.
Anyway, again, I send you all my gratefulness for your work !
Charlie
ps:
- I also could reproduce the above tests on slacko5.29.6. Time to frugal boot is 65 sec.; whereas 45 sec for 5.29.5.
- CPU use : on both versions, HTop reports a cpu ranging from 0 to 42% with a rough estimated middle value of 20% ... I have no idea... isn't it a bit too much ? Or maybe normal on such a light and slow PC (600MHz, 192MBRam) ?

Evening.
Can someone check the link for RC++?
It's giving me a 404 not found. And below it says that the file was removed.
Cheers

I **think** that this is the intended link for RC++, although I am only guessing from the choices available in that directory
http://www.brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko01/stuff/puppy/spup/RC/slacko-5.29.6-SCSI.iso
Note that the link I am providing is for SCSI drives and does not specify PAE in its name....
EDIT: Maybe not, as wget is showing my provided link as being only 112M instead of 01micko's above stated 124M. 01micko's Slacko RC is showing as his stated 124M...
2nd EDIT: I see playdayz posted (immediately below) at the same time of this edit, so go with what he says. (Thanks, playdayz!)

2.6.39.4 is smaller because of xz compression.

So, is 5.29.6-scsi supposed to be RC++?
Cheers

@Billtoo
Thanks for the info.
I can't see any PAE in your uname -ra.
Is this image PAE or not?
Thanks in advance.

john3voltas yes 5.29.6-scsi is RC++.
did pfix=ram frugal manual install to ext4. slickpet downloaded mesa driver installed and works, previous troublesome broadcom wifi found on wlan0 by SNS then configured and made the connection without issue.
what doesn't work again as reported in B5++ appears to be the multi-sound card. it will configure HDMI 0 and output sound but only until mplayer closes.
the sound settings require resetting each time something is played. think I was the only one reporting this but in other pups such as 528, 529 the multi-sound card kept the settings persistently so doubt it is my hardware.

Did you have any problems with save-session back to the media? Or the Live media reboot using its save-session?
BTW That quite a PC you've got. Speaking for myself, I can't wait to get behind the wheel of one of those. Congrats!

I'm running from a DVD+RW and after installing some pets etc. I rebooted and saved the session to the DVD, it rebooted with all my additions with no problems.
The new pc is pretty nice thanks, I quit my tobacco habit 5 years ago so I can afford a new pc now and then
