What I *should* do is recompile 2.6.39.4 non-PAE and offer that as well.. and if I find the time I will. 2.6.39.4 is that much superior on all my kit so far.
In retrospect I should have done that first but I was too lazy to find the config option in the kernel config. [ ]

great thanks therefore, Mick !

OK they are in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d instead; me have no /etc/xorg folder...?

just run xorgwizard after installation, and pray! |
Me praying but perhaps me having not enough faith...
...running xorgwizard and doing xwin at the end brings to the command line for all cases.
Doing
| Code: | # xwin
dirname: extra operand '/usr/lib/x/drivers-backup/vesa_drv.so'
Try dirname --help for more information.
Starting X, specs in /etx/X11/xorg.conf, startup apps /root/.initrc ....
...

While xorgwizard runs the SiliconMotion warning is displayed, and after TEST_X_NOW, and waiting till FINISHED (there the setting fields are left empty except the driver; vesa), return to the command line prompt . No more hang up however.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty - just contains "DUMMY" -
Now backing up to my working xorg.conf, and doing
| Code: | # SILICON
cp: missing destination file operand after `/etc/X11/xorg.conf.oldSILICON'
Try `cp --help' for more information.

Me keeps praying...

Hi Mick,

Seems like me kept enough faith ... it works!
I uninstalled the previous charliexorg-0.6.pet and reboot; then installed the 0.7.
Run xorgwizard/choose siliconmotion driver/Silicon warning -'yes'/select frequency range C/resolution 1024x768x16 then 'TEST'/ got the warning 'if you see this, X is working....blablibla' - did Ctrl-Alt-BS/ then got the desktop displayed.
Just one thing: touchpad no longer working.
(note that before installing that last pet, the touchpad was much sensitive - Till then, I could not set synaptic however as there came an error message: I did not report this already as I believe another forum member has done it)
thanks again Mick - now leaving for work
Chalie

Thanks for report Charlie.. we are nearly there . When you get time there is more tests as you know, no rush .
-
I have a little time tomorrow and will release RC . There will be changes to the kernel structures. PAE will be identified as such when running "uname -r". The default kernel will be 2.6.29.4 NOT pae.
So...to clarify, RC will be released with 2 kernel options, both the same kernel, compiled slightly differently.. one standard and one PAE They will have unique identifiers which is essential to getting the correct 3rd party video drivers (and others as they become available).
We are really and truly at the very pointy end but I have confidence. New woof is coming together just fine. The release I make will be fully reproducible down to the checksum.
There is only one thing I have neglected, Fprot. I know tasmod and pemasu have done some work but I need to brought up to speed. My workload is at optimum... no need to overload .. so I'm not ashamed to ask for assistance (yes I know stuff has been posted).
Anyone think of anything else? I'll be checking here about 2200GMT 111005 and that will be absolute zero. No requests, only essential bugs fixed thereafter. i expect to post RC about 8 to 10 hours later.
This has been a fantastic ride and the climax is upon us. Are you ready? I am
Cheers

pemasu combined xfprot-2.4_fprot-6.0.3

I have used this successfully in lucid 528, luci 529, dpup exprimo 5x7 and slacko B5.

@ 01micko:
Will the missing ATI drivers be in this one?
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/r300_dri.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/swrast_dri.so

Hi 01micko et al,
If, and only if, Fprot for Linux is solely an "on demand" scanner then it seems to me to be falsely named since there is no protection, but, at best - detection and hopefully cure.
Windows users need higher quality "active" protection, with possibly "on demand" scanning as a secondary tool. Though "on demand" scanning of a Download directory/folder may prove useful in Windows or Linux.
If you use Wine and want a super-fast download (instantaneous with Broadband) and a fast (60 secondish) "on demand" scan try the reputable (but may show the occasional false-positive - so never delete recklessly) http://download2.emsisoft.com/malaware/MalAware.exe which can be bookmarked in SeaMonkey or any browser.
My regards
My view may be wrong and comments and criticism are invited,

Would it be possible to include a menu entry for alsamixer? It is the mixer of last resort--when nothing else works, alsamixer works, at least for me and my weird sound cards.

hi all
Good idea Playdayz, a lot easier than having to run it in terminal (strange soundcards here as well )

I have the same problem if I want to use the slider of retrovol..
Test 1:
no action with pmusic.. the sound is up. Unable to modify. The two sliders are blocked ( that of pmusic and that of tray volume icon)
Test 2:
VLC the two work (Alsa is the default mixer of VLC)
Test 3:
GnomeMplayer. The program works, its volume slider is good but not the slider of retrovol.
I have to modify parameters of GnomeMplayer > Preferences> Audio> and I must choose Alsa and not 'default'.
After that taskbar slider is good.
But at each stop of GnomeMplayer, settings are lost.
Test 4:
Internet and FlashPlayer (Seamonkey) taskbar volume slider is good.

Pmusic is set to use the 'master' channel as default. Of all soundcards, there are some that not has a 'master'. I wonder what is the most common alternative. I could easily let pmusic look for another main channel if 'master' does not exist. But I don't know what to look for.
What result do you get if you execute amixer -i in terminal?
