Adding extra language and keyboard switch at will (Solved)

#1 Post by costas100 »

Some 4 to 5 years back I switched to Ubuntu (from windows) and never looked back (now I am using ver 10.10 - Maverick Meerkat and a few others).
Lately I tried Puppy ver 5.2.8 and I am really impressed:

1. Fast like a bullet
2. Simple in most basic tasks
3. Very easy to add additional pets
4. Even helpful in removing viruses from windows partitions

But I do have one major issue:
I cannot add an extra language support. My basic language is English and I also need Greek as a second language and maybe French as a third language.
I tried two basic installations on a USB flash (English and Greek) and it becomes very awkward to use (especially when there are a lot of changes in the same page. It is almost impossible to use with this method.
Then I tried adding a second keyboard using menu/Setup/Mouse/Keyboard Wizard then advanced Xorg keyboard configuration, then layouts and add a second language. Then click Yes to activate, but nothing happens (I tried various combination of keys to change keyboard language but nothing appears to work).
The only partial success ( which unfortunately has no practical use) is to go to menu/Setup/Mouse/Keyboard Wizard and then choose keyboard for your country, select one language only , restart X and in the process loose all previous entries including the file where the test was done. Unfortunately this will not work in my case.

Then I tried to understand how Scim works and found this page, but here I am totally lost.

I am debating if I should simply give up, but I think it will be a pity, since this software has so many good things to offer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

lost.
In the menu window where you choose layout and layout variant you have another menu "Options". On the top you have "Group shift/lock behavior" where you can choose key combination to change the layout.

See the attached picture.

Thank you saintless I like this user name it has a deep meaning, after going through some trials under the options tab I managed to now have the two languages active and switching with the alt+shift keys

Thank you nooby, I did a search using your user name and keyboard and found many pages but none with the confusing data or the edited version. If you get the chance please send me the links.

To both of you many thanks and best regards

I think the description in your link is OK.
I also didn't know what SCIM is. Here is the explanation:
From Wikipedia
From wikka

Edit: Here is a very good tutorial for adding keyboard layout in puppy linux:
http://nediko.info/tutorials.php?e=os&n ... d1bae4f852

It is written in bulgarian language, but I think the pictures are enough to be clear for everybody.
